Thank you to everyone for participating in honoring 399 in such a beautiful way. Humans need to remember and appreciate that we are the guests in their wild homes, and give the wild animals the respect they deserve so we can all live peaceful together.
I, like Tom M, want to know WHY with 21+/- road collisions daily caused by Humans, these horiffic deaths are termed "accidents" They are NOT accidental. 399 and her cubs needed much better protection from the human who killed her. It costs nothing to simply BE AWARE. SLOW DOWN. The Public, The Park Service, its agencies & individuals who had 28 years to realize 399 was not an accident waiting to happen, need to prioritize the funds & man/women power to make roadkill safety a priority for her. I for one want confirmation from these agencies that response priority number ONE in honoring 399's Life is moving the 21 roadkill carcassas as far OFF the road as necessary, for Bears (& cubs) to feast, but reduce the obvious risk. Can a drone response system of some sort monitor bear feeding activity? I ask compassionately and appreciate ALL that you're currently doing to prevent a roadkill loss of this National Treasure known as 399.

@@suzannabotkin1437 I personally have been partly responsible for 399s health and the number of cubs she was able to produce and feed, along with hundreds of hunters that left elk gut piles behind in her home range. "Tolerance" such a fickle word, maybe it is the photographers and tourists that are the "tolerated" visitors that bring nothing or profit from a bear that had a bad habit of living by roadways. I hadn't known about the carcass near the highway. It's really hard to realize that this could have been avoided, even more easily than trying to slow people down. Breaks my heart for the loss of 399 and for all those who loved her, especially those who spent a lot of time with her like the local photographers, guides and Tom. She gave us so much.
Chris...how wise of you to assess her 'mauling' as a natural response, and I know that the young man had a lot to do with that decision, as well. Bless you ALL who left her to be herself. The end result was beyond words.
Thank you all for taking time to help us with the healing process and share your wealth of knowledge as we honor 399. I send each of you my condolences during this sad time.
I agree with Tom and was thinking the same thing as to why they didn’t move the carcass… Why??? I hate to blame anyone BUT as popular as she was, why the heck wasn’t someone out there to monitor the situation.. as far as I’m concerned, I would say that they dropped the ball on moving the carcass and saving her. She was a gift like Tom said.. as soon as I heard she had been hit, I started digging more into it, and when I heard that she was there hours before & they didn’t do anything about it, it made me mad. It made me feel like that they didn’t give a crap if there was bears in the road or not.
My wife and I were in the Tetons for a week in September and went out to Pilgrim Creek to look for 399. Never did see her. We wish we had gotten to see her, but wow, what a legacy and education she left with us. Rest in peace 399 and grateful thanks to all who advocate for Grizzlies.
When I heard the new I just started crying I ♥️ that Bear she was so sweet and she was a great mother ❗I just hope that Spirit will get through the winter ❗ Please keep us posted on Spirit and Thank you Kim Ruff from the State of South Carolina RIP Grizzly 399❗
@GratefulOverlander Well hello why Grizzly 399 eat around the road area to keep boar which is a male 🐻 not to kill her cubs boar don't like to be around people ⁉️ When a male Grizzly kills her cubs she will go back into heat so he can breed ⁉️
@@kimruff7133no 💩, lmao. Thanks for the nature lesson that I didn't need. There's NOTHING about nature, especially Bears, that you can teach me. I've dedicated 50 years of my life to this. Wtf does that have to do with her being a bad mom? Call the city of Jackson Hole and ask them how much trouble she caused IN TOWN, and ask them if they would allow ot with any grizzly besides 399. Sad incident, but she was a horrible mom
Thank you Tom for introducing the world to 399. I agree with Tom her ashes or body belongs in the wilderness I hope 610 lives long and carry on 399 legacy She was magnificent raising her cubs and letting the world learn of grizzlies
I think 399 should have a proper burial or spread her ashes as Tom said. I really feel 399 should have a very nice memorial, maybe by Pilgrim Creek, with at least one large life size bronze sculpture of her and her 4 cubs from 2020....also a building dedicated just to 399 complete with beautiful photos of her and her cubs throughout her life. I would love to see enough space dedicated to 399 that different artists commissioned by fundraisers could donate their beautiful works of art to this special place. I would also love to see a very special bronze sculpture of 399 and Tom Mangelsen standing besides her, as he has been her biggest fan throughout her life. Tom and other photographers have brought this beautiful lady, 399, to so many people around the world. RIP beautiful lady, 399.
Thank you PBS for bringing this panel together to talk about 399's legacy, I am so touched, moved, specially when talking about animal feelings and their natural instincts of feed, protect their families. Talking about 399 legacy, I am wondering can her offsprings be specially named as 399.1, 399.5, and 2nd generation be 399.1.1 etc., rather than 610?
I was worried about exactly what Tom mentioned about Spirit being so far away from Pilgrim Creek. Spirit has such a long ways to travel to get back to their den. Makes me so scared for Spirit.
Such a trying time in the wake of this sadness. We’ve found ourselves leafing through Tom’s book and re-watching videos of her. Our hearts both have broken over this. We were fortunate enough to see her and 2 cubs in 2013, but just missed her this past year (2023) when we visited again. Losing her this way is difficult. Compounded by the tragedy of seeing Grazer’s cubs in Katmai earlier this year, only to have the little one killed by a boar in Brooks Falls. 😢
Wonderful and thoughtful commemoration of a life well lived. We should celebrate 399's life and the lessons learned from the way she lived and from her tragic death. Hopefully, the various agencies will find a fitting way to memorialize her legacy.
HEARTBREAKING.. OUR BEAUTIFUL GORGEOUS QUEEN TAKEN FROM THIS WORLD TOO SOON BY A CAR ..SHE SHOULD HAVE PASSED PEACEFULLY DURING HIBERNATION NEVER THIS WAY...WE LOVE YOU OUR QUEEN NEVER FORGOTTEN ALWAYS IN OUR HEARTS XXXX 🥰🥰🥰😭😭😭😭😭😭🙏🙏🙏🙏💔💔💔💔💔🐾🐾🐻🌈
I’m so sad. And now to know that that carcass had been there since the day before and they didn’t move it……like this could’ve been prevented….just makes me sadder. I’m like Tom. I wanted to see her come out next year and shun Spirit and see if she came out the next year with more cubs. I pray Spirit can make it. 😭😭🙏🏻
I am sorry to hear this was " Preventable. Human ignorance has destroyed so much innocence. We are to protect them, our voice is their voice as they try to communicate with us. This is a HUGE WAKE UP CALL for us all to Cometogether, in the Heart, speak up, wake up, honor our innocent friends , do the right things, with truth & integrity.
My Heart has been broken over the Loss of this Beautiful 399. She was one in a million and want to thank Tom Mangelsen for introducing her to the world. We spread my Dads ashes in different spots in the Jackson/Teton area that he loved so dearly, and I pray that they repsect her 399'slegacy and put her ashes back in the area that she loved and roamed for 28 wonderful years. I also pray that you, Tom, continue to follow 610 and the rest of her descendents for years to come...to you I send my hearfelt hugs. 399 was a gift to this world and hope Spirit is okay. Thank you so much for this panel💔
Just to clarify, 399 was not on the carcass when was hit. She was down the road several miles. The carcass have drawn her to the area, but she was not feeding on it when struck.
thank you for sharing this so promptly! tom, your advocacy for grizzlies, especially the iconic 399, is deeply appreciated! what inspired you to start working with grizzlies?
So sad to hear about 399. It was even worse to hear that she was hit by a car. I know her cubs will be taken care of by loving people. Her ashes can be strewn across the land that 399 loved. ❤
What a Beautiful Bear. Always been fascinated by Grizzlies. My first encounter with a sow in the early evening in Sept. on Mt. Washburn in early 1980's pushed over to infatuation in them Just read an article with Chris Servheen and was happy he said his thought process on grizzlies has changed. For the better. It is important that these great bears stay under federal protection and not handed over to the irresponsible state control.
Like others, I am heartbroken to have lost a queen I have never met. What gives me solace is that she will not suffer the ravages of a natural old age death. The wearing down of the body from starvation, weakness, and prey for another animal. Watching her decline slowly, nature taking its unforgiving and cruel course, would have been horrific.
When my 9-year-old cat died, I was so sad that I cried so hard I couldn't stand up. Grizzly Bear 399 comforted my heart so much. When I think that I will never see Grizzly Bear 399 again, I really cry so hard I can't stand up. And I pray that her loving Spirit will be found.
934 fathered her 4 cubs in 2020 and Bruno, 679, fathered her 3 cubs in 2013. The facts that 934 was brutally killed by an 80 yrs old man and that Bruno was hit by a car also are extremely sad! Yes, 399 was productive, but more than half of her cubs and her mates died of human interactions, either being hit by a vehicle or being shot by an evil man! 399 was so trustful of human beings; but we didn’t do much to protect her, her cubs, and her species, other than just photographing her and her cubs. We owe her immensely!
Mangelsen personally profited off that bear for years. He also was and active opponent to the elk hunt in Area 75 and 79, ironically those hunts were directly responsible for how healthy she was and prolific her litters were. Elk hunters should be personally thanked by Mangelsen as they fed 399 and her cubs late into the fall, often delaying hibernation due to the ability of food/elk gut piles. The Park has now cut those hunts to 40 tags from 350-400 in the past decade, and thousands in previous decades.
Agree with burying her. She captivated me online and Ivery much appreciate the photos of her and her cubs. In my youth I worked in YP and knew John and Frank Craighead and never forgot what I learned from them.
I want to preface by thanking all of you who made the time and shared wonderful memories of Bear 399 and her off-spring/cubs. Tom, I thought about what you said regarding beer 399 going up and down balling over her single Cub Snow, that was hit and killed . After she removed her Cub from the road and placing it in field a little ways off, and then going up and the road bawling, maybe it's possible that she was hollering a way of communicating, "look what you've done, my Cub is now dead, couldn't you have been more careful, this is my baby that has been killed and I am sad". There was this look of intelligence when bear 399 would look up out towards the vehicles but seem to be looking specifically paying more attention to those she knew were her human rocks , possibly those who she knew better than others. And Paul. I am thinking that because you met her and began your journey with her, she knew you and Jane with a few others in a special way, with a connection that will remain in your hearts. I have been following she and her Cubs for a while, and The connection is strong but I can't even imagine those who met her in real life alongside the road or standing somewhere taking pictures and as she looked up somehow she just had that look as if she were studying you. She knew that people watched after her, would not purposely hurt her or her Cubs and I think that she took great joy in knowing that they were safe where she trotted for the most part, but sadly she met her end. I read where the speed limit is 55 mph where she was hit. If they are going to keep the speed limit at 55, they need some kind of lights. Blinking yellow lights that say beware of beers walking, much like they do up here in Northern Arizona and they say elk and deer crossing . People slow down because they know that they have better control of that vehicle going 45 than they do at 55. Again, I am so terribly sorry, please know that all of you are on my heart and in my prayers and bear 399 will be sorely missed.
Thank you for having a memorial for 399. She was loved by so many She will be missed

Heartbroken.💔
Thank you.
Thank you Tom for introducing the world to 399. I agree with Tom her ashes or body belongs in the wilderness I hope 610 lives long and carry on 399 legacy She was magnificent raising her cubs and letting the world learn of grizzlies
Agree with Tom. It is criminal for someone to hunt a grizzly bear, and even more criminal for politicians to allow that to happen.
It was wonderful! Thank all if you. ❤❤❤❤❤
So very sad and horrible that the Queen is gone😢. I sure wish people could be more careful when they drive.
Awesome! Thank you! ❤
This is so heartbreaking- please consider a donation to the Wyoming Wildlife Advocates. We need to fight to keep these creatures protected
Hoping to hear good news about Spirit.
Rest in Peace Grizzly 399
I AM SO HURT BY MAMA BEAR 399 DEATH SHE WILL LIVE IN MY HEART FOREVER ❤❤❤❤❤🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you from Iowa
We need wildlife crossings!!!
Yes - please build wildlife bridges.
I am sorry to hear this was " Preventable.
Human ignorance has destroyed so much innocence.
We are to protect them, our voice is their voice as they try to communicate with us. Unless our hearts are OPEN , our minds clear, we will not hear their cry for help.
We are coexisting with nature, all life is to be honored, respected.
"Wildlife crossings
Wildlife bridges are necessary .
We NEED Everyone to work together on this is the solution that will surely succeed and save many lives !
These beautiful majestic souls deserve this much.
We have taken over, destroyed their homes, pushed them into rural areas, roads with traffic & the need a way to safty.
Their babies, families deserve this.
Where humans failed so much in past allows us to learn and do better & create solutions.

I am so sad with the passing of 399. I have follwed her for many years and have fallen in love with 399. I hope Spirit is safe whereever it is.
Just to clarify, 399 was not on the carcass when was hit. She was down the road several miles. The carcass have drawn her to the area, but she was not feeding on it when struck.
So, so, so sad. Can't stop crying. Also, angry that she could still be alive if the carcass had been removed from the road.
I am heartbroken over the loss of 399. Thank you Tom Mangelsen for sharing your love and stories about 399 with us.
RIP beautiful Momma Bear!!
thank you for sharing this so promptly! tom, your advocacy for grizzlies, especially the iconic 399, is deeply appreciated!
what inspired you to start working with grizzlies?
So sad to hear about 399. It was even worse to hear that she was hit by a car. I know her cubs will be taken care of by loving people. Her ashes can be strewn across the land that 399 loved. ❤
I am so going to miss 399.
Thank you panel! Sending love. Thanks for your advocacy. Can we keep them on the endangered list, so they are not hunted?
What a Beautiful Bear. Always been fascinated by Grizzlies. My first encounter with a sow in the early evening in Sept. on Mt. Washburn in early 1980's pushed over to infatuation in them Just read an article with Chris Servheen and was happy he said his thought process on grizzlies has changed. For the better. It is important that these great bears stay under federal protection and not handed over to the irresponsible state control.
What a monumental loss
Like others, I am heartbroken to have lost a queen I have never met. What gives me solace is that she will not suffer the ravages of a natural old age death. The wearing down of the body from starvation, weakness, and prey for another animal. Watching her decline slowly, nature taking its unforgiving and cruel course, would have been horrific.
She will be missed
When my 9-year-old cat died, I was so sad that I cried so hard I couldn't stand up. Grizzly Bear 399 comforted my heart so much. When I think that I will never see Grizzly Bear 399 again, I really cry so hard I can't stand up. And I pray that her loving Spirit will be found.
I am with Tom. Where were the authorities that day?? The suggestion to watch Dracula's Kingdom was not the right note to end a remembrance on.
❤️❤️RIP
934 fathered her 4 cubs in 2020 and Bruno, 679, fathered her 3 cubs in 2013. The facts that 934 was brutally killed by an 80 yrs old man and that Bruno was hit by a car also are extremely sad! Yes, 399 was productive, but more than half of her cubs and her mates died of human interactions, either being hit by a vehicle or being shot by an evil man! 399 was so trustful of human beings; but we didn’t do much to protect her, her cubs, and her species, other than just photographing her and her cubs. We owe her immensely!
I've been to Yellowstone 4 times and have never seen a bear. Please protect them. I would love to see a wildlife bridge in her honor.
Please build wildlife bridges.
Just a grifter making money off of new jersey cat ladies obsessed with a bear they attribute human personality to....
What organizations are continuing to protect Grizzlies? How can we donate to them? What specific organizations are trying to delist them?
Agree with burying her. She captivated me online and Ivery much appreciate the photos of her and her cubs. In my youth I worked in YP and knew John and Frank Craighead and never forgot what I learned from them.
hello from australia
I bet she was so lost when snowy was killed. How very terrible and she loved her soooo much
I want to preface by thanking all of you who made the time and shared wonderful memories of Bear 399 and her off-spring/cubs.
I worked three Summers in Yellowstone in the mid 1970s. We could always drive over to Hayden Valley and see Grizzlies.
