It’s interesting to note that even as beat up as he was Thorfinn handled those bullies with ease. When he is calm he is much more capable. I love the scene with Leif and Thorfinn with the light shining through. Also the way you see Askeladd and his thought process. The king didn’t know he was from Wales, it was a coincidence. That doesn’t matter now though because Askeladd showed his cards.
When music kicked in, during Leif/Thorfinn conversation - it was beautiful. It's like a scene from movies or shows about drug addicts, where bright promising kid starts using drugs which leads him on a self destructive paths. And then uncle/teacher/sports coach finds him in some back alley at a very low point and tries to offer help and salvation. And Thorfinn knows Leif is right, he just can't let go + plus he probably feels like he's too "tainted" to reconcile with his family
