  • Check out what we find in this calcite ore from a silver mine. an Hour in vinegar to clear and remove all surface contamination, then an hour in Hydrochloric acid. And the outcome is amazing! Native Silver on Calcite!

    I remember from when I visited the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, there was a display where they did something similar, but with gold ore. They completely dissolved the quartz and what was left behind was a beautiful display that was about the size of an open hand, where you could see how the gold flowed through the cracks in the quartz.

    The easiest and best way to clean certain specimens. You do have to keep a close eye on them, disolve too much and you only have silver left, not specimens worth 20 times that.

    • @noob19087
      @noob19087 7 месяцев назад +6

      Chemist here. You can keep reusing it until it stops working. Keep it in a plastic or glass container, rinse any contaminated dishes with a good amount of water and pour down the drain. But if you need to get rid of a bunch of it you can just dump in baking soda until it stops bubbling to neutralize it, and then just pour it out.

    I'm not mad at the clickbait title, prospectors have a limited viewership and vinegar is technically acid, so props on not misleading anyone, but maybe blur the label for the first 20 seconds or so. 😬 love your content Dan, if I'm ever in bc and brave or cognizant enough to try, I would love to at least meet you over lunch and ⛏️ your brain. Beautiful stuff Dan.
    I have a story for you are your viewers, you may want to try some time your bored. LOL.
    I had an opportunity to work on the Voisy’s Bay Project 20 years ago and heard of a process they were using to claim the minerals from the granite. They were using acid. They had used it at the mines in South America and it worked well, but the North American granite was a little more stubborn. They tweeked the process and it also became a good way to extract the Nickel, copper, cobalt for the granite.
    A few years later I came across an obscure book on the internet, you might call it it the lines of occult, so far as it was stories, no one was supposed to have heard. I one that relates to this:
    An explorer of the Jungles of South America goes off exploring in the 1910’s of thereabouts. During his trek he observed a colony of birds which were nesting on the face of granite cliffs. Flush vertical cliffs. As he watched the birds would fly up to the cliff and flap away in one spot on the cliff and rub at the face with their beaks. On closer observation, he saw they had leaf matter in their mouths. They would rub the cliff, fly away, then return with new leaves in their mouths. Somehow they would eventually make a hole in the face deep enough to build a nest.
    Jump ahead 30 years and the explorer’s son is reading his dad’s notes. He decides to explore the area and try to figure this out. He travelled to the area and set out. He found the cliff with the bird’s but he did not find the plants the birds were getting the leaves from. He returned to the landing sight on the last day to return home and relished that all the metal he worn below his waist was missing. All the grommets, spurs, buckles, rivets, were all gone, but the leathers and organic material was unharmed. He had walked through the bushes on the last day but did not know it. He had to go home.
    The author stated that it was a mixture of three common and easily accessible acids.
    Cheers.
    From this information I have come to believe the Great Pyramids were built from moving large amounts of aggregate and melting it into the large blocks we see today, with such fine, laser like gaps.

    Do you coat the specimens with anything to prevent the silver from tarnishing? I would think over time a silver oxide layer would form on the silver crystals and make them turn black, unless they were blocked from contact with atmospheric or other oxygen.

  • @LordReywer
    @LordReywer 6 месяцев назад

    The metals exposed after the acid bath seem to have two different colors, is it silver in both cases? If yes, what might be the cause of different coloration?
