There was a guy from France who went to Norway to commit a mass shooting because he knew their prisons were like country clubs and the maximum sentence allowed by law for ANY crime or combination of crimes is 20 years.

I am a progressive. I can not ephasize enough how much progress is needed for a better world. But I am also sceptical towards Norway's approach to it's prison system. While long sentences, harsh enviornments and unforgiving conditions are surely the opposite way of success, there is a certain limit towards the better life approach. Prisons are there for 3 reasons. The first and most obvious one is the protection of society against crime, the second is acting as a deterrent against crime, the third is correction and rehabilitation. there is though arguably a fourth reason for their existance and that is justice for the victims of crime. A prison this luxurious is offers no justice for victims. A prison should be humane, clean, liveable but not by any means pleasant. It is also extremely expensive, costing the tax payer money. So as I am very much for a softer approach, I cannot plead for a summer camp as punishment.
