these stunt planes have an incredible rotation rate, any other plane he would not have been able to level out and keep the nose out of the water. The prop hitting the water would have been 150mph cartwheel. That clip is as close as it gets to flying out of an accident.
It's 3am and I've just rolled my face on the keyboard out of laughter. It's just so perfectly timed with the touchdown aswell :D Now my nose hurts, good night.
Unless the thrust to weight ratio of the aircraft is not above 1 (which basically only applies to rockets and some fighter jets without payload and minimum fuel) it does not really matter. You can add as much speed to a stalled wing as you like. You need to reduce the angle of attack and. A stall is not a speed problem but always an AoA problem. It's by the way amazing that he remained that much aware of that so he did not tear like hell on the controls and entered a secondary stall.
To all saying this should be banned before some one gets hurt. You have no right to dictate what is an acceptable risk. It's like me saying I dont like a certain type of food heres some data to show that people have accidentally died from eating it. Now we must ban it for the safety of every one.
Pharozos I know I'm late to the party but you're correct, I bet the majority of people saying it's unsafe drive cars, look how many people die in car accidents each week, banning cars would eliminate 100% of those fatalities but they don't want that to happen because it directly impacts their lives.
Exactly. I can't stomach people who extend parental authority into the lives of adults proxy legislation. Free men don't need to be told what they may or may not do or what they may or may not hold in their hands. This is a pathetic urge left over from our infancy that we need a parental figure in the form of government to "allow" us anything. It is always those who know the LEAST about any particular subject who are the most resolute to enact superstitious and nonsensical legislation and create criminals out of honest men.
I met Matt at the Albion Park Air show (south coast nsw Australia )4 weeks ago he is a very generous man with his time , I couldn't help smiling for hours , Thank you Mat Rob NSW Australia
This is one of the most incredible displays of piloting skills I've ever seen. With this much of g-force and things happening so fast, it really required superhuman abilities to escape the situation without any harm.
The truth is Mat is an excellent pilot as he is a RAAF flight instructor so this is added pressure for him as a Red Bull pilot as he has the Australian Airforce watching him as well as the Aviation community so I believe it's much harder for him as it reflects the Australian Airforce community standard.
Those reflexes... I can't lie. In that position I would have cartwheeled it in. To recognize the break, unload, roll wings level and start the climb in less time than it takes to curse... That's peak performance.
1:00 You can tell he's an amazing pilot by looking at the rudder keeping the nose up and helping to level the plane before touching the water. Incredible.
Incredible? Why even get that low, plus nearly full stalling the airplane? So you got to be amazing these days to put yourself in a dumb and uncalled for situation and then take yourself out of it again? How about not getting to such a situation to begin with?
Pilots have to push the plane to it's limit and take massive risks to win. This man airplane stalled because the turn was slightly too sharp but he managed to not kill himself because of his incredibly quick reaction. There's only a handful of pilots on this planet with this type of skills. I don't see what's "dumb", obviously you don't understand it's a race and not a trip to the supermarket.
Vara sometimes to explore the limits of human and machine capability, terrible risks are taken. Because of this experience and many similar tiny experiences like this, pilots and engineers of planes become better and better... some techniques are learned by accident in near miss situations.
To add to this: Our societies have become so risk averse that even those who wish to risk/sacrifice themselves for the advancement of human capabilities are looked upon as evil or a detriment. This “let’s put everyone in a bubble” mentality is the true detriment to progression.
Holy Crap! Now that had to be the adrenal rush of the century, he not only skipped on the water, I bet his heart skipped a beat. Bet that was a slow motion mental trip, wow. Good job.
I meet the guy at an AAFC conference. Before he terminated from the RAAF, he was in Afghanistan flying with the USAF at the time in a F-22 (they wanted him for a mission he said was confidential). most likely straight forward where hes going, my guess is if you look into the turn far enough you cant see your plane enough to have a natural feel on the controls, it might be slightly disorienting,,, kinda like when your driving a car going around a turn, you look into the turn somewhat naturally, but if you look too far you can find yourself drifting to the outside of the turn, ive personally done that before and almost hit a minivan head-on,,, scared the shit out of me
Forward and slightly ahead. You need to see the aircraft relative to the horizon, especially when low. Just like you drive a car next to the median on a highway without looking at the median. Peripheral vision gives you the distance relative to the median information and directly ahead of you gives the vehicle control information.
Does anyone above know the load factor on the airplane and body when turning at that bank angle while maintaining altitude? Those people are doing breathing techniques and struggling to get blood up their body, you get a narrower field of vision. Drivers are not pilots. Learn to fly!

@bigsnowaowan Nope, the pilot said that he G stalled the plane. Which means that the manuver that he pulled off was over the limit where the aircraft was able handle at the moment. Ground effect is the effect when the aircraft experiences extra lift when it's about one wingspan above the ground.
