  • This was my first visit to the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, but definitely will not be my last! This place was off the hook for birding. I saw birds I had never seen before, and some that are not seen often in Western Washington.
I had gone to hike around the trails, but ended up doing the car tour (in that section you had to stay in your car until May 1, so you can probably walk that one now). I was not disappointed, especially since it was a day scattered with rain. I was there at the end of April and spring is a great time to visit, as there are babies starting to show up.
Besides the wildlife I also enjoyed learning a little about the human history of the area, and seeing the oak forest areas which are also not common in Western Washington. I definitely recommend visiting this place!
Most of my bird facts came from the Cornell Lab's All About Birds site: www.allaboutbi...
This land is the traditional territory of the Cowlitz, Multnomah, Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and Confederated Tribes of Siletz.

Thanks for watching and commenting! It was a bit odd to be on a driving tour but ended up being so enjoyable. I didn't get wet and could go as slow as I like with my windows down so I could hear all the bird calls.

Awesome, you got to see so many pretty birds! I haven’t visited this NWR before… great that you can walk some trails and drive some too. Pretty Egret! I like seeing the Shovelers… once in awhile we see them over winter but I haven’t seen any for a few years. Super cool to learn there are nesting Sandhill Cranes there. Great photos of the yellow-headed black birds! Wow, great access to see the wildlife, we’ll have to visit sometimes… thanks for sharing with us! 👌☀☀☀

I think you would really enjoy visiting there! I love those shovelers. I rarely see them, but there were a lot at Ridgefield. They are so cute and comical with those giant bills! A lot of people see owls there too, but I didn't when I went. I was pretty happy with the ones I did see though. Have a great week! The sunshine is coming! 😃

@@HikerT You sure got to see a variety of birds! I definitely want to visit - seeing owls would be exciting! I checked it out on the map- next time we’re going that way I’ll build in some extra time!

Great video! I have only been there in late November, nice to see the place in the spring. We saw lots of nutria. The oaks are a real treat, many old ones. You did a good job showing us the birds and giving id's. One of my favorite places for sure! Look forward to more videos.

Maybe I'll try in November for the nutria sightings 😃 I definitely recommend spring for the birds though - wow! I was really blown away by the variety, and as you drive slowly along with your windows down you can hear even more that you never see. I heard a bittern but never did see it. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

Thank you! ☺ I have a lot of practice with birds since I have so many at my house. I track all the wildlife I see and ID all the birds. I have been writing down all the ones I see each day for about 10 yrs! Crazy? Probably 😆
