The determination of Tsultrim Chonjor, a Buddhist monk, to single-handedly build a road for the survival of his people is truly inspiring. It's amazing to witness his dedication to bringing transformation to their lives. Who would have thought that an old frail monk, living in a remote monastery, on top of the mountains, would have such a broad view of the world around him. To serve his people, he sold his only possession, a small piece of land, to buy a machine that would connect this tiny village to the rest of the world. While others wait for the government to bring development to their village, this lone monk actually went ahead on his own and made is a reality already. While monks seek solitude and peace to connect with the Buddha, this lone monk has brought the blessings of Buddha directly to the people through one bold act. Though the villagers rightly despair that modernity would destroy their lifestyle, yet it is the need of the hour as their life is threatened from not just the hostile and serene nature, but the enemy just across the border. But this monk has already shown the enlightenment to the people he shares this world with. And if that is not a way to nirvana, then what is? It amazes me that in this world of jealousy, competition, aggression and deceit, one still cares for the people around him. This makes our world, just a tad bit happier.

This is a touching, heart warming story. One detraction to this story was the interaction between this most dedicated monk and the religious leader he attempted to speak with, starting after 6:49. I hope a lot was lost in translation, because this leader seemed quite pompous. Here's someone, now 78, who spent his LIFE as a monk, had spent years building a road, a new part of which the leader rode on the prior year, yet the leader barely commented on the road, and did not even remember the monk's name. One could hope for some sense of sharing of a common religion, ideology and dedication. But there was none. The leader and his entourage of 300+, all on modern mountain bikes with front suspensions, just passed on by.
Tradition made the monk ask for a blessing, tradition gives the reason why the old monk is almost ignored. The old monk lives an original spiritual life, bless him for his insight and action.

That monk is wrong when he says he feels sorry towards the cyclist, has only come to see something new and have some fun....That cyclist probably learnt more in that journey than most academics or religionists learn in a lifetime!
"just a single man and his willpower" ... and inheritance of land, modern piece of technology as well as the help of 2 young man. It's an impressive accomplishment, but nothing truly big is ever done on your own.
Salute to the monk and big salute to the jcb drivers 🙏🫡🫡🫡🫡just an extraordinary work and dedication by these people.. i m living in ladakh region since two years. And looking at these people doing something extraordinary work in this region is just beyond my imagination..hats of to them.
I was surprised the monk felt sorry for the bikepacker, if that was translated correctly. I would have expected him of all people to get it. I wish I was that bikepacker right now lol.
It's true, that biker's journey seems illogical compared to monks road. I think, he's right. We should invest our time and energy wisely, to help as much as we could, but ultimately it's decision for each one to make.
@@tadeasgregor7112 lol you misunderstand the purpose of cycling. A person who is physically fit has so much more to offer than a person who is not fit. I use my fitness to keep my family warm, pay the bills, maintain the trails, and train my dogs. Oh and I use my fitness to literally put food on our table. So you are mistaken to think that it is one or the other.
@@CanadianSledDog well I don't talk about maintaining body fitness, but about investing all you have to something with dubious purpose. I myself am cyclist, but I still think, that he, in the video, took cycling bit far with choosing to go around Euroasian continent and all in flip-flops. He did it seemingly for his ego, not from selfless intention. But after all everyone has right to choose how one spend his time and energy. I just speak my opinion. I don't know what lead him to go on such journey as much as I don't know what he was talking about with the monk, that made him say, that he feels sorry for him.
@@tadeasgregor7112 I didn't see that, I mean he wouldn't have much to brag about, most people brag about their possessions or jobs not cycling in flip-flops, so I'm not sure how it's egotistical. Just seems like a challenge for fun to me.
I really appreciate what this monk did. But the fact that a private individual had to sell his land to fund the opening of a road is indicative of the impotence and ineptitude of the government.
Of course there was already a road into Zanskar/Padum previously from Kargil (past one of the few 7000 meter peaks in the region ,Kun and Nun mountain, which I rode in 2014 on a motorcycle) and this is just a shortcut just like another new road that has been build from Wanla. The unique example of people not having to pay rent or a morgage since land is free and building your own hous is nearly also so and you grow your own food (and make your own alcohol from barley) plus only having to work 6 month a year because of a long winter, but despite the cold it doesn't snow much and it is sunny most the time (because Zanskar is in the rain shadow) and it is the time of festivals and much merriment..., meaning: hopefully this new way of life is also an exercise in not 'throwing out the baby with the bathwater '.
Ofcourse the “white” lady does not think about the poor people that live without roads. Unfortunately some things will be lost but the Road will be good for the people that live there. God bless this Monk that has sacrificed everything to build this road.

Hopefully everyone does the same, doing good without return or reason.
One of the best life everrrr i feel when our past generation live like this 🎉
What dalilama doing he should help this monk?
GREAT VIDEO....VERY MOVING. THANK YOU
When was this road completed and what happened to this wonderful monk?
That guy is awesome!
Great film man if he wishes can move any Mountain to achieve his goals.
Salute 🫡 he is a real hero of everyone in zanskar and made their good life 🫶❤️👍
absolutely loved watching this video
Thank to this monk and his thinking
Real man of Steel 🫡
I really appreciate what this monk did. But the fact that a private individual had to sell his land to fund the opening of a road is indicative of the impotence and ineptitude of the government.
Excellent documentary❤!!!
Pure goodness in thought with love of mother earth ❤️🕯️🙏
in the buddhist koans, there goes a story about a monk who carved a path inside the mountain still used today. have a long life sir.
Great encouraging story!
Thankyou for your great lesson
Hello if it’s below freezing at night you need a diesel fuel additive to keep if from jelling
Ofcourse the “white” lady does not think about the poor people that live without roads. Unfortunately some things will be lost but the Road will be good for the people that live there. God bless this Monk that has sacrificed everything to build this road.
Bro said i will do it for the future!❤
