Love it. Absolutely nothing wrong going ultrasonic. Maybe a bit heavier than lidar/laser/time of flight, once you cross 250 grams, use what works well, easy to implement, and cost effective. Great project! I'm hooked on seeing what comes next!

Thanks a lot Mate! :) I am not teaching anywhere. I am planning to include more and more background to my videos, because electronics is a really cool subject! Let´s see how can I fir everything in the schedule! :)
This is a great proof of concept. The only thing that is a bit tricky about this solution is the range of the 433Mhz module: when you think obstacle avoidance is working but it doesn't you will definitely smash it into something one day. :P Not sure if this is possible and if it reacts fast enough: but maybe you can let the drone temporary think the battery is empty by tricking the voltage sensor pin (not sure how it will react to that though) or let the drone think it lost signal so it will "hover" instead of continue the movement.
Thanks! :) Yeah that can be an issue. But for short range practicing it is something. I am still working the issue checking up every possible datasheets on the chips in the drone.. :) The problem is that in case of a collision signal the hover is not enough. It needs the reverse thrust. And that is tricky as you may think... We see. DATASHEET IS YOUR FRIEND ALWAYS!!!! :)
Yeah, a lot can be done for these birds. I am trying to make the mods as understandable as possible, and working on developing a platform where it becomes a bit more Plug and Play... :)
Is there a way I can buy this or a way that you could do this to mine I use the litchi app to track me on my dirt bike but I’m scared it’s gonna hit something due to lack of obstacle avoidance sensors
The optimal solution would be a 360 degrees LIDAR sensor on the top, but they are quite heavy. Otherwise all direction can be monitored for sure. One sensor could be also rotated with a servo (left-back-right-back-left...). From the servo position the software could identify which side the obstacle is. But the drone moves too fast for this. That is more for self driving slow robots...
Great skills. What about the pause button, it stops the drone immediately no matter what speed or direction if I remember correctly. Maybe this could be just triggered by wire to perform a stop on obstacle detection?!
Is it therefore possible to make a box that fits on with front back and side sensors? Self powered and makings Bluetooth connection with the drone? Cool!
Ive been messing with these sensors a little bit, im not gonna do it so ill share my idea. Basicly you could use that same sensor by itself if you could make it spin . Maximum distance setting with slow rotation could provide rough 360 obstacle avoidance. A tiny motoe may weigh less than multiple sensors
Thanks for your project, can you share more about remote schematic part. Some chinese flycam nowaday have laser sensor, I think that it can be 360 degree obstacle avoidance for mini 2. Sorry for my bad English
Maybe you can try the same test by using the VL53L0X with a small vertical spindle mounted on bearings which allow the lidar to turn freely in the wind (as wind vanes) and, therefore, check for collision on different directions. Of course the vertical spindle needs also a sensor to check direction.

My other video on the autopilot explains how it is connected to the remote. This system on the drone is not connected to the drone at all only power supply lines. That is why there is the radio link.
Great idea for making it autonomous without much modification. I'm wondering where the drone GPS antenna is? Is it on the back of the drone somewhere? And in that case does the extra electronics interfere with the GPS lock?
Really awesome idea, I am thinking of doing the same, just with a beeper on the recieving end so I don't have to tear the controller apart. I'm just wondering, since it's working on 433mhz what's the range it would work? Thanks
you could improve the solution by not looking at the current distance, but the difference between two. This way you can detect the nearing speed. Bigger speed is bigger countersteering.
can you make it that the threshold is adjusted by the speed of the drone automatically like if you are going 40km/h (24mile/h) the threshold will increase. and if you are going slower it will decrease
Yes. :) The problem is we have no access to actual speed data. But there can be a relatively accurate estimation of speed from the integral graph of forward joystick position. I will work on it. ;)
Thank you very much for the video. Could you explain how to improve the WiFi signal of the Mavic Mini? At 300, 400 meters I always have a signal failure, even with a changed antenna. Ant cool, thank you very much. Greetings from Spain
😅😅 Not on this simple test setup. I am working on some LoRa modules to extend the range and on those there will be both encryption and error correction as you very well pointed it out! :) Not complicated encryption, but enough to not let you pick up random signals. :)

I totally get it! Yeah the OccuSync is also a bit too exotic for me, but I am looking into the datasheet of all possible chips in the drone, to try to find a way to implement the the same thing internally.
