- In this video, power over ethernet technology has been explained, which is also commonly known as PoE.
What is PoE?
Power over Ethernet is the technology, in which along with the data, power is also carried on the ethernet cables, which can be used to power up the networked devices, like IP Phone, IP cameras, Access points etc.
Now to carry the power over this Ethernet data cables, certain IEEE standards are defined.
1) IEEE 802.3.af
2) IEEE 802.3.at
3) IEEE 802.3. bt
These standards define certain properties of the established link, like what is the maximum DC power which can be safely transferred over the network cables, what is the range of DC voltage, what should be the cable resistance, what is the allowable maximum current over the link etc.
Advantages of PoE:
The advantage of PoE is that installation of Ethernet connected devices to the inaccessible locations where it is difficult to provide power supply or where too many cables are in the way. Also, there is no need for the separate cable for the powering up the devices. So, using PoE it is possible to maximise the savings on the installation cost.
PoE terminologies:
Power Source Equipment(PSE):
The device or equipment which supplies power to the networked devices is known as PSE. e,g Network Switch
Powered Devices (PD):
The devices, which receives power over the ethernet cables are known as Powered Devices. (e.g IP cameras, Acces points, IP telephone etc.)
The timestamps for the different topics in the video is given below:
0:33 What is PoE?
1:24 Advantages of PoE
2:16 PoE Terminology
2:30 Signalling in PoE (To check whether the connected device is PoE enabled or not?)
5:42 Cable Connectivity in PoE (Type A and Type B)
This video will be helpful to everyone in understanding the Power over Ethernet (PoE) Technology.

Nice tutorial! Thanks for the detailed explanation.
Really helpful. Thank you
Very clear and informative, thanks a lot!
Very Informative in its simplest form...Thanks
Thanks a lot, you really explain all the important parts in a understandable way
do i need Poe injector for router to work ?? and wiill the router port work after taking internet cale through poe injector ?
Everything is covered , Nice tutorial, Thanks
Very informative! thanks for sharing
Thanks for spreading knowledge 👍
Thank you, it is helpful
HI!
I have a quick question:
Any IP camera (which has also an ethernet connector) can be connected to the network using PoE?
Are there any specifications for voltage?
Nicely covered all the points👍👍
I have a mi router which is connected to my isp's reverse poe switch at the top of my building and i was given a tp link passive poe model poe2412g in case there are speed issues however i don't think it has anything to do with speed, I'm facing issue of very high ping from router to default gateway and henceforth, could you please help me with this, the ping is around 500-1000 , isp - tikona
Excellent as usual
Question: If a switch supports 802.3af and 802.3at, does it mean it can power an end device which only accepts power from spare pair? how will i know if the device requires an additional power adaptor? Also, why do some devices accept power only through mode b? because most switches work by default on mode A
nice.
i have spare ruckus zoneflex 7025 accesspoint which can used as a standalone device. this device support PoE , I have a pppoe type of internet connection provided by my ISP. i want to connect that pppoe connection to this ruckucvzone flex 7025 , how do i know that the pppoe cable thats comming to my home will b able to support the PoE to power up my device n provide intenet connection as well ?
Hello,
can cat5 or cat6 give power to an ip camera? I don’t want to purchase a Poe
Good explanation of signature.. not many people explain this.
I have try to connect one router to another router using 45 lan cable it show no signal can I use poe for solution
Main router + 100 meters + POE + 100 meters ethernet cable is it gonna work or do i need POE injector?
Is there any way, to connect 2 IP cameras with one ethernet wire?
thanks good knowledge
Hello Sir, Can I use PoE to connect a 750 GB or 1TB external USB drive to my ethernet. I have the USB to ethernet convertor. I would like to know if PoE will provide enough power. I understand PoE comes in two standards 15 watts and 30 watts. Google says an external hard drive takes about 15 to 30 watts. So will this work? Thanks in advance.
What will be each channel output votage from PSE is it has 8 channels in case of 802.3.bt which according to u has apporximate of 52V. what does that mean, will each channel amongthe 8 provide output voltage of 52V or all 8 channels together add up to be 52V.
Please reply if anyone knows.
Thank you thank you
Thank you
Can you suggest some routers with PSE capability
love it
Great explanation!
Great tutorial because you explain and talk at a good pace and voice but when it got to the electronic diagrams I got lost, lol.
Thanks
Do you have any video explaining Minecraft redstone circuitry?
Very good video!
I have a question, what does HS stand for? I have a NVR and it's POE 25.5 per port .af .at, 8 channel.
Does it mean High Standard? Meaning POE +
Thanks
Yes, it is PoE+.
Thanks for a great explanation. Especially on types vs. power / mA !
Question: Can I connect a device which has it's own powersource (i.e. thermostat) through electricity socket (220V) also on POE-port (Even when while it is powered through socket ?
In other words as I understood from your explanation: It doesn't matter how the PD is powered up. The POE-port on switch will first send a signal to PD asking if it needs power. If not or if it has its own power supply (i.e. 220-socket) then it tells POE-switch that no POE-power is necessary. Therefor the POE-switch will send zero (0V) power to PD, but WILL continue to send data. Correct.
I need this info because I want to buy my first managed switch with either combined POE and non POE-ports or - depending on your feedbcak) all POE-possible - ports only some won't be supplying power as the device has it's own power supply.
Thanks for your feedback.
PoE is here to stay. (15,4W) = af
PoE+ (25,4W) = at
PoE++ (55W ore more) = bt
And PoC ! = 100W to the unit and a New cable for function) = 2 cables today; = bt
In the FUTURE to all AP with need 2 cables ore more (I think)
If we work with PoC.
Ore some NEW that we today don´t know about.

i have an issue.... the power is transmitting through cable but data is not tranitted.....
same
Thank you, your presentation was great and clarifying.
Do you know/heard something about Power over Data Line (PoE in automotive)? If you know something I would like to discuss with you. Thanks.
Yes, I have heard about Power over data lines. I know a bit about it, not very much.
But yes we can discuss. If I know about it, I will definitely let you know.
ALL ABOUT ELECTRONICS They are considering to implement PoDL in automotive for the next years but with an input Voltage of 12V (automotive voltage). What are the differences between PoE and PoDL? The maximum output will be the same? We are saving the power line but implementing PSE and PD circuit, is there any benefit (cost and weight) as we know that we are using Automotive Ethernet with UTP? Explain what do you think about it. Thanks.
so PoE does two things which is supplying the power and the data?
Yes
Sir, can I use your demonstration image on my blog? I don't think I can find a better explanation picture than yours.
And I will certainly make it clear that the picture is from your youtube video.
@@frankking6308 Yes, you may use the image.
pranam guruji.
0:46 PoE Data + Power
Ah ok Thanks
What is the maximum distance ( m ) to deliver PoE?
It is 100m. But it should be less than 100 m for reliable operation.
ALL ABOUT ELECTRONICS
It reached to me till 160 m on 48 VDC. i ask if we need to extend the distance to 250 m.what is the sloution here ?
I have circuit details of poe
Langyang bumbay ito, pilipit dila…
pass if you don't want to struggle through an accent. sorry!!
Why did the dude in this video tell me I owe backed taxes and I have to pay him in iTunes gift cards?
Please fix pronunciation
*GOOD GRIEF IT'S AN EPIDEMIC ANYMORE*
....you people need to start putting in your video's titles "WARNING: I SPEAK HALFAZZ ENGLISH AND YOU WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO MAKE OUT 75% OF WHAT I"M SAYING IF YOURE LUCKY"
Agree 100% but this video was super informative. Turn on the captions. They work very well for this video.
Cant understand anything he's saying!
I am not being rude but can you please learn proper English so everyone will be able to understand what you are trying to say.
Dear Janos, You are rude. No one forced you to watch this tutorial. English is not only taught in western countries any more. It is a universal language. I love see one of your "You Tube" presentation and comment same way you commented. So just keep quiet and try to learn. Do not add your self to a racial Moron.
You are not rude you are outright stupid. His English is just fine and can be understood clearly irrespective of his accent, which he has since English is not his first language. He has quite successfully explained in clear and grammatically correct English the concept of PoE, so that people from those parts of the world who speak only one language (English) can understand it. If you still do not understand it, I believe there is something wrong with you my friend!
Let’s assume two things: you’re ignorant, and he’s likely a primary English speaker. If he was raised in India, his country was colonized by the British, and the Queen’s English was imposed and is widely used, including in schooling.
@@kannanayakal Sorry, I disagree! I found the dialogue very difficult to follow due to the extreme accent.
Janos did say he wasn't meaning to be rude, and so do I, but to an English speaker it is almost impossible to follow to the extent of being frustrating and annoying.
20 seconds into the video and...ENGLISH would've been nice....
Why do we live in an "American" society which thinks it's ok to choose Non-Native English speakers to interact with the AMERICAN public? I'm so sick of it!!!
Thank you
it is really helpful....
