With the PS5 receiving a new update (currently in Beta at time of writing) one of the biggest and most requested features that has now finally been enabled is the M.2 NVMe SSD upgrade slot. It's been more than half a year since the launch of the PS5 and one of the biggest complaints from users (aside from stock levels being painfully low) is that the storage available in the default model is rather small. This new update and the ability to add additional storage has been met with mixed responses, as it has now become clear to many SSD buyers that the type of storage required for PS5 is much more advanced in architecture than the SATA hard drives and SSDs of previous generations. This, combined with an increased understanding on subjects like PCIe connectivity, Heatsinks and wrapping their heads why this new SSD tech is more expensive has certainly led to a fair share of raised voices! I have already discussed why I think PS5 using PCIe Gen 4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSDs is a very good thing previously, but today I want to help you choose the right SSD for your PS5.

Things I learnt from this video: Need a heatsink and a normal one will do the job fine. Thank you so much!
Exactly the test I've been wanting to see.
I never thought I’d be so captivated by every nvme SSD related video this dude’s channel drops.
Don't know why I'm so captivated by the possible differences in temperature caused by type of heatsink used... I must have this knowledge apparently.
I'm here for every single one. He loves the tech, that's all i need
@@mohannair That’s deep! 😂
@@princegroove 😆
Haha right ?
7:33 for the results
Great video btw man
I almost never noticed the seagulls until he does. I've been enjoying all the SSD work keep it up
Big time Kudos to this man. This is what I've been wanting to see too! Conclusion, get a heatsink people!
same
NAS, please do a thermal test of the SN850 with heatsink. The drive has amazing performance but runs hotter than other drives according to reviews. Would be great to see thermal results of the drive running in the PS5
Imagine spending 399-499 on a ps5, and 200-600 for and SSD and then not wanting to put a 10-20 heatsink on it.
More like 1000 for ps5 and 500 for ssd (no point buying below 2 tb)
I spent 500 for my PS5 no scalpers were or will ever get my money.
@@FuckJewTube664 £450 for my PS5 £377 for my 2TB Aorus SSD

The cooler the better as for all electronic devices. Nicely executed 👍🏼
Except : toasters , irons , kettles, electric blankets , plug in heaters , sandwich machines, electric ovens, heat guns etc etc etc
Thank you for the insightful test. The thermal difference between the slim and cheap heatsink against the no heatsink is very huge
Mate, you're doing the Lord's work right here. Thank you!
Which heatsink do you recommend?
Another awesome video. This is the “meat & potatoes” us American tech nerds love to gawk about.
A interesting test would be to check how much of a difference the ssd cover would make to heat
The Sabrent version in this test has no cover on the ssd section. It’s too big for the cover to fit on.
It would be nice to know, how other bigger heatsink WITHOUT COVER perform. Like the Archgon HS-1110. This is one with Fins and also a bit massive like the sabrent. I will use the Archgon heatsink with the 2tb Corsair MP600PRO. Thanks again for your top videos and Tests! OT: I also did a Thermalpads-upgrade (14W/mk) to the PS5. The different is really huge! Cheers
@@blakecandesign9628 for thr SSD it’s good but for the rest of the console?
That’s what I wanna know. Installing an ssd with heat sink then take the temp with the cover on and another test with cover off

To me it is one of the most important and interesting topics right now! Thx for making this video! Cheers from Sweden
Great test. Would have loved if you measured the impact on the overall system temperature for the three scenarios.
I just bought a 1tb SSD with heatsink because of your video's, I got the Corsair MP600 LPX M.2 For my new PS5, Thanks for awesome
Breakdown and deeper understanding on why their needed. salute from the UK🔥
I like the Seagulls!!!
To be fair with ya I think the larger Sabrent made no difference, I think the major difference is that with the Sabrent the hatch was removed so allowed heat to escape easily reducing the oven type effect that comes from having the hatch on and keeping all that heat in and it was still only 2 degrees on average lower than a compact sync, and sony say to always make sure the hatch is in place, whether that's for keeping dust out or not I'm not sure but, for just a 2 degree difference I think I'll use a compact sync and reinstall the hatch.
yes i noticed there was no more than 2 deg C diff through those tests.
This video hit the nail on the head. So many people need this video
There will probably be custom 3d printed covers for larger size heatsinks.
Thank you so much for your pioneer work! Awesome done, each vidz to ps5 and the others too! You're my hero!
Good video man, thanks for making it. Laughed at the end about the seagulls
Holy cow! +20C difference!
And I figured having that giant heatsink of the Sabrent would outweigh the down side of not putting that cover back on
Wished he tested the small without cover just for comparison.
@@shakengandulf true true! I find if you have a heatsink that sticks out past and need to leave the cover off. The little bit of heatsink sticking out will still have cooking because the fan is still circulating in that area with the side panels on
Thank you. No bs just the numbers.
Once again.....an excellent video further explaining “things to know for PS5 internal ssd’s”.
Can’t wait to see the next one. 😉👍
I thought the seagulls in the video were the ones which have taken to nesting on my roof and shitting everywhere.
Man I hate seagulls
I'm glad to see that the difference between the 2 heatsinks is only about 2°C. Also after watching a few of your videos, I've noticed you've got a Uni teacher style of tone when you talk.
This video confirms it.
That he hates Seagulls and you need a heatsink :)
Up until a week ago when the update was released I'd never even heard of a heatsink.lol
For those wondering, Sabrent Heatsink does fit inside of the digital version PS5 but won't allow the PS5 shell to go back on. If you want this to work out you'll need to own the disc version. I have the Sabrent SSD and heatsink but sadly can't put my PS5 shell back on because I own the digital version, and yes I was ok with not using the SSD cover since I own a dust blower that I use to clean out my PC. Finally I do own 2 extra slimmer heatsinks I bought way before So I'm good for now unless I end up with a disc version in the future.
Many thanks for this informative contribution! I wonder whether or not two-sided M.2 SSDs are getting even hotter when compared to one-sided ones. In addition, I would love to learn, whether the ELUTENG heatsink can also be used for two-sided SSDs such as the firecuda 530 2/4TB - and then still fits into the PS5.
I bought the sabrent because of your videos
I appreciate the effort good sir! Very informative video. And when you factor in the seagull drama it was quite exciting
Really appreciate this content. This is exactly what I was looking for.
Do the same test with thermals of APU/memory of ps5
Thanks for doing all the hard work for us. Definitley informative
Excellent information. Used your videos to make a decision on my SSD. I purchased the Samsung 980 and the heatsink arrives today. I'll be installing this evening. I'm sure future models of the PS5 will have a built in heatsheild for expandable storage but installation seems relatively simple at this point.
It would’ve been nice if you tested the no heat sink and the one with the smaller heat sink with out the lids to see the difference with lid and no lid.
I’m also interested in the difference in using the lid or not
Yes this would be a great test. But hopefully it doesn't take away from the CPU/GPU
that would have been very useful... if the temps didn't reach 55 degrees without the lid, I would totally go for a drive without a heatsink to save some money, or go for a bigger drive if it's not much more expensive.
Great video. Digitalfoundry has done test, how it impacts in games with and without heatsink, and the difference is minimal. Don't get me wrong, get a heatsink it's 10$, but it's not catastrophic, unless you live in a very warm environment.
nice sunglasses 😎
I use a KC3000 2tb ssd without heat sink for my ps5 and have zero issues.
I do have a standing fan facing the ps5 permanently though to be honest.
Not sure ill ever get SSD, just interested in the testing, temp comparisons.
Having said that, i wished you tested the small heatsink with no cover aswell.
Very good video. I was waiting on someone to do a video like this.
Your videos are so informative this bleeding yank lol became a new subscriber
Ta, me old china'. I'm pleased as punch
Hello. Thank you for your pointer.
I agree with all your point and i will add that i am saddened that we are so lax with reliability. I hear constantly "not a real world use." Well, i bought a thunderbolt enclosure and put a firecuda 530 4tb to do backup of my computer. Long story short, it doesn't like me writing 1.5tb in one go. It overheat and disconnect but i guess i shouldn't mind since my use is not a "real world use".
What annoy me about the whole ordeal is how little knowledge there is that those ssd actually need good cooling for sustained operation and that those "aluminium enclosure for better heat dissipation" are just not up to the task. I ordered one with a far chunkier heatsink in hope that resolve the problem.
You should test the thermals for the entire PS5 with the sabrent with the metal cover off and the other heat sink with the cover on. This will determine if it's truly worth getting the bigger sabrent. I'm sure someone is now creating a slightly taller metal cover to compensate for a larger heat sinks. I wish I knew how to design it actually lol
@momo yea I got the big Sabrent heatsink like he did it works fine open I haven't had any issues I've been having long sessions too. I got some thermal tape I was going to MacGyver a cover over the heatsink but I was afraid it would cause more harm than it would fix. But the more research I do on the PS5 the less that cover seems relevant.
That's what i wanted to know. Can't find anything about that...
@@BlackDoomax I'm rocking the big heat sink on my PS5 with metal cover off everything has been running perfectly no issues for over a year now
@@dove348Good to hear! How has it been with dust accumulation? Have you noticed more dust in the SSD-compartment with the cover plate off?
@@Privatdetektivan sure that's unavoidable but I keep it cleaned off. But I haven't had any issues as far as overheating or performance loss
Thank you for these important tests 💪🏼
60 looks fine, my nvme gen 4 in a notebook goes to 90 degrees under heavy use and still has 96% remaining life after 3 years of use.
I gotta feeling the newer PS5 revision[s], will allow thicker/taller heatsinks compared to launch models, making the ease of finding suitable heatsinks better.
Will the Sabrent Heatsink fit in a PS5 Digital? I think there is a little extra space in the disk edition that lets it fit but not on the digital.
It doesn't fit digital, tried earlier can't get the main cover on, as the disc version has a bigger cover
@@Mark-tl7hz Good to know. Thanks for testing.
You should make puns to see if the seagulls laugh use them to your advantage
WOW, thank you very much for your great videos!
It is unbelievable how much effort you put into your research about ps5 memory extension!
I wonder if it wouldn't have made more sense to put the sensor on the memory controller chip.
According to my personal research with 4 different SSDs, the controller chip gets significantly hotter than the Nand chips
in the vast majority of cases and is probably also the reason when it comes to thermal throttling.
My ps5 is now colder it’s amazing the difference
Thanks for making this video, the SB-HTSK is awesome and i don't like that metal plate.
Thanks man,appreciate your hard work
Thanks for the info, temp is important so kudos
Come for the SSD temperature tests. Stay for the seagulls.
good review. i will say my ssd with the yateng heatsink is great. my ps5 when i feel it, doesn't feel hot just very warm. and thats on one side only. so the heat sink is doing its job because only the bottom of the system is warm.
These things are rated to run up to 100 degrees before throttling, not ideal obviously but anything under 60 will be fine, it’s just console folk not understanding pc components
And that Linus guy tells people you can remove the heatsink if you buy a SSD with a heatsink that's too big... I would definitely recommend keeping the heatsink on and not placing the metal plate back or replace the heatsink if the white side panel doesn't fit back on, you can get heatsinks for SSDs dirt cheap...
When will Sony do a firmware update so it can be used 🤔
Already out in beta

how about eluteng heatsink vs aorus 7000s vs wd sn850 heatsink ,which better cooler, this is my most concern, i dont care about speed which almost all ssd performance are the same good.
I'm using the heatsink plus my ps5 sits on a laptop cooling fan pad which keeps it cooler always.
finally a video that helps me ! i have a ps5 and a 980 pro but i been holding off on install cause no heatsink
PNY XLR8 CS3040 i believe this one runs much cooler.
53 is perfectly fine for a ssd and it still won’t be that hot while playing games they don’t do a massive right always. If you don’t want a heat sink don’t worry about it
Hey mate, Would the ssd be fine if it doesn't have a heatsink for a week or 2 until it comes in the mail?
Gotta love those seagulls. Haha. Thanks for the temps info.
Great test! Thank you man!
would you recommend not to put the cover plate on even when using the "smaller" heatsink to give more "room" for heat dissipation
Ikr you would think that no cover plate would allow more heat dissipation.
You are the true source for PS5 SSD 🔥
You actually did it fair play awesome vid
And we thought the ssds were a hassle to get ahold of, psh!! Heatsinks are as rare as a retail ps5!
Really appreciate for the video thanks 😊
Great content! Very concise!
I was hoping you would show the temperature of the drives while playing games which is the actual use case. Transfers are temporary high loads which in the grand scheme of things won’t really affect the drives much.
Can you do that same temperature test again but with the same games you have been testing boot times.
30 minutes or an 1 hour.
Fellow commonwealth person here from Australia so dollars just not USD
Thank you for your efforts i would love to see no heatsink and not cover like the big heatsink that would be interesting
can i use the Sabrent 1TB Rocket 4 Plus with the Sabrent M.2 2280 SSD Rocket Heatsink (SB-HTSK)
SSD nand work fine even at even 90c (normal temp range is listed as up to 70c from most manufacturers) so this just goes to show you don't actually need a heatsink in my opinion. ( I have a heatsink but I always thought it wasn't really needed and its just Sony trying to cover their behinds from people in really hot box installs of their ps5s) also most times the ps5 is just doing short read bursts and will never get this got in normal operation unless you are an idiot and put your ps5 In a drawer or small cupboard/media furniture lol. Then I think you would have bigger issues anyway with the GPU/CPU throttling because it's too hot.
You really are covering every angle on the NVMe PS5 Upgrade..
Ok so conclusion:
Only for gaming without huge sorting processes on the Ssd it’s possible to let them run probably without heatsink, but you will risk a lot of heat during long gaming sessions.
With heatsink the temperature is totally fine for gaming.
Honestly, I think Microsofts Memory Card SSD was a better idea.
Definitely watch my data news of the week video later today l
This is the real test I wanted to see.
Glad to hear it. Hope it helps you.
@@nascompares it really did, now I have no questions, I gotta get a heatsink.
Get a heat sink.😂. This guy figured it out for us.
You need the temperature of controller not the NAND chips. NAND likes to be warmer, the controller doesn't. It's the controller that will be responsible for the throttling
True. But the m.2 cavity of the PS5 did not allow me to cover the controller without invaliding the test by introducing airflow or interfering with the heatsink contact. The NAND temperature is still a valid enough temp here to indicate the temp difference of differing/no heatsinks and to illustrate my greater point.
Thanks for the information definitely something to consider when buying a new ssd for the ps5.
Also if I may, could you please make a video on the best Nas for 2021, I'm in the market for one that is easy to use, with mostly the option to run docker containers or has at least a decent selection of apps validated by the vendor and if possible the potential for expansion with different capacity drives
Ty
I wonder if there’s a temp difference depending on position of ps5. verticle/horizontal?
Excellent my good man
Thank you for the info
Love your seagulls 😂
Thank you for this! I was completely unconvinced that the cover needed to go back on. Thank you for confirming it does not!
Thanks for this,information
Great test 👍
My ssd came today but ima just wait till tomorrow when my heatsink get here lol
Great video. Anyway you could test the WD SN850 with the heatsink that comes with it and perhaps one without? TIA
I use a Samsung 980 pro without a heat sink and without the ssd cover on and mines been going strong for months, I’m in the process of renovating a house so I don’t have an extra $20.
I’m not saying you should do it just that it’s possible to do without for a period of time if need be
Eventually I’ll get one when my house is done
You should test it for a worst case scenario. For example if the whole system is heated up after playing games for 2 hours.
And it would be nice to save the measurements to create some graphs for better comparison.
So what I’m getting is that you can use a large heat sink just don’t put back the cover and it will still be fine
We all know that ssd without a heatsink would running hotter, the real question is would it throttle down noticeably in performance while running?
