I’m from Delaware and honestly Wilmington is like a 20 second blip on I-95, the communities immediately surrounding it are actually pretty affluent. The Wilmington area is known for old money (DuPonts), private schools, and country clubs. Downtown is the only bad part and it’s only a couple blocks I wouldn’t walk through otherwise I don’t think it earned the #1 spot
Large areas of Wilmington itself also had a lot of old money and beautiful old homes on leafy city streets. But the other part of Wilmington below downtown was an urban nightmare of decay and drugs.
You're right. I went to Brandywine High School for two years. It was a good school in an upper middle class neighborhood. I think the south western part of Wilmington is the bad part I think they're referring to. That part is indeed like medieval times.
Hahaha are you serious? we average 15-20 murders a year and have a population of 70,000 people. Also downtown is the good area. West side, east side, north side, southbridge, west center city are all worse than downtown
My friend wanted to hangout somewhere different in Delaware. We used to do weekend trips to the beaches. He tried convincing me to do Wilmington for the weekend. He thought it would be different and they have a boardwalk now. He tried and tried and I put up a good fight. So he got frustrated and annoyed and went there by himself. Witnessed a shooting in broad daylight as he was finding parking at the hotel he was going to stay at. He never brings up Wilmington now. Lol
Some of the safest and most affluent cities are in New Jersey. I’m not defending NJ and most likely wouldn’t retire here due to the property taxes, but there are a lot of really affluent towns here.
I think we're all kind of rooting for Detroit to turn it around a bit. Also the fact that you can buy property there so cheap in some areas, seems like a possible long shot gamble at some profit. It'll likely never be what it used to be, but I'm kind of hoping Detroit turns it around.
New Mexico is a jewel of natural beauty. I love visiting, but you can definitely start to feel the depression start to set in after a while. U.S. history can be quite glorious...but NM is a reminder of some of our unfortunate growing pains. Drugs, alcoholism, and virtually zero room to advance economically as industry is limited to only a few areas. That said, if I was rich, NM is a contender to set up shop in some off-grid dessert mansion.

While I haven't been a victim of a crime yet, I'm sure it's coming. Very few places here are on "the good side of town". Most of the decent places to live are outside of city limits, and they can be very nice. People are flooding to the outskirts of town in droves. I see this town to be much like Detroit in the years to come. Cheers Briggs, keep up the good work!

Detroit is pushing forward in a positive direction on a consistent basis . People are moving back into the city . New residential developments have or are being built . Downtown Detroit has an residential occupancy rate of 95 percent , Also a huge demand for office space downtown . We have a great mayor in Mike Duggen who is focused on the entire city not just downtown . Chemical Bank is moving there head quarters from the suburbs back downtown in another new high rise across Little Caesars Arena . New developments like Brush Park with 2600 new homes built . As a Delaware resident, I mostly agree with this. While Wilmington has a very high crime rate, it feels like they're trying a revitalization process similar to Detroit. Their downtown and riverfront are getting better, but the problem is that they're not focusing on helping the people in poverty. They're more worried about their reputation than helping those in poverty and essentially have been pretending that the disparities exist, and I fear they will keep doing that until they push them out of the city entirely, leaving them with nowhere to go.
I distinctly remember my first experience crossing the border (I'm Canadian - sorry!) and unintentionally driving through some parts of Detroit on my way to Cedar Point, OH (GPS got us a bit lost). Scary stuff. I remember feeling like I was in some war-torn third world country and my most persistent thought was "How is this the richest country in the world? Something is really wrong here". I have visited many American cities, some nicer than others. I haven't visited Detroit since.

I've been to Detroit several times. Oftentimes it has the feel of an elegant person who has hit rock bottom. Political mismanagement and incompetence are no doubt real, but another part of the equation is for years few people gave a damn about what happened in Detroit. Now's its on the radar screen of Jamie Dimon and other bankers.

That part is indeed like medieval times.
i read reports about the crime rate and it is bad
Oh yeah...the heir to the Dupont fortune who raped his kids lives around there, right?
Lol
Camden New Jersey not on this list? Hmmm...
Yes, and Newark New Jersey?
Some of the safest and most affluent cities are in New Jersey.
I’m not defending NJ and most likely wouldn’t retire here due to the property taxes, but there are a lot of really affluent towns here.
Evidently, Camden isnt all that bad anymore. However Chester PA will never fail when it comes to poverty and violence.

As a michigander, I cannot believe Detroit isn't #1 anymore. Rabble rabble rabble!
I think we're all kind of rooting for Detroit to turn it around a bit. Also the fact that you can buy property there so cheap in some areas, seems like a possible long shot gamble at some profit. It'll likely never be what it used to be, but I'm kind of hoping Detroit turns it around.
@HULK HOGAN Quit lying, you fucking piece of shit.
You sound more like a Michigoose.

Daniel Smith you haven’t been to Wilmington
New Mexico is a jewel of natural beauty. I love visiting, but you can definitely start to feel the depression start to set in after a while. U.S. history can be quite glorious...but NM is a reminder of some of our unfortunate growing pains. Drugs, alcoholism, and virtually zero room to advance economically as industry is limited to only a few areas.
That said, if I was rich, NM is a contender to set up shop in some off-grid dessert mansion.
Detroit is no longer the worst. It's progress. I'll take it.
Yup. As bad as they have been, they are doing amazing.

Lol I lived in Shreveport for 7 years, it was the friggin worst!! I live in KCMO now and I love it!!
What was Shreveport like and what do you like about Kansas City?
@@suprensa4393 Shreveport was pretty rundown, the overall government there didn't seem to give a rats ass about the state or any of the major cities, and the laws are outdated, and corruption is embedded in law enforcement from the bottom to the highest levels of office. KC is by no means perfect, but it's open carry laws, minimal government interventions and laws that promote prosperity and encourage growth and development, plus the school district I live in is one of the best in this part of the country. Shreveport was the exact opposite in education, the only way kids got even a half way decent education there was to pay for private school. It was a mess, and I don't think it's gotten any better since I've left.
I was stationed at Homestead AFB when hurricane Andrew hit. We were told to evacuate that Sunday and I came home to South Carolina and finished my military time here at Charleston AFB. I still live in Charleston proper in West Ashley and it is safe here but just across the river is North Charleston. North Charleston S.C. is a city that should have made this list. North Charleston has all of the criteria that you spoke of that qualifies a place for this list. There is hardly a week that goes by that a couple of people doesn't get shot and most of the time killed. The schools suck there and the city's lower income neighborhoods look like war zones and I know first hand what a war zone looks like and to tell the truth they are. Take a look for your next update and you'll see what I mean. I really learn a lot from this page. Keep up the great work and thank you for your service!!
P.S. Charleston is considered as the friendliest city in America according to Travel Magazine but it would make your most racist cities in America. I guess they forgot to ask the black people how friendly it is.

Speaking of downtown Dan Gilbert has a 915 ft skyscraper being built now at Hudson site .He also started construction on the Monroe Block . 5 different high rise developments including office , commercial , residential , and retail .
Most cities that talk revitalization are just sucking up money for investors in a scam and end up embalmed. fFxed up a bit but still dead.
Where's Flint, MI? Its considered worse than Detroit by many.
