Associated with Steven Spielberg since the started working together on Close Encounters of the Third Kind in 1976, Kahn has taken home 3 Oscars and a parade of other awards an nominations. He & Spielberg are known as the last converts to digital editing and just this last year Kahn gave up his Moviola for an Avid as Spielberg directed his first digital movie, The Adventures of Tintin. Kahn is receiving a lifetime achievement award from the Association of Cinema Editors this year.

    Don't be fooled by his modesty. He is extremely skilled. Look at the Omaha Beach scene in Saving Private Ryan. It's extremely difficult to edit something in a way that it is chaotic while being coherent.

    • @kthx1138

      It's a matter of finding priority in the story and characters. In Private Ryan, the priority was following Tom Hanks' character up that beach and getting into his head psychologically, as he sees the horrors happening all around him and yet knows he has to do something if he wants himself and his men to survive.

    • @jonathanlimjun6238

      He's edits with both an upright Moviola (on most Steven Spielberg films) and digital Avid.

    Oh, how I love people who think that interviewees just happen to give a great interview... in spite of the interviewer. There are cases of that at junkets, for 3 minutes. Not for 40 minutes. I may be "distracting," but I got a great guy, who is not very verbose, to give an interview I am very happy with and am thrilled to have gotten.

    Another favorite Mike Kahn scene for me is Jurassic Park, when Lex the computer hacker realizes the door locks are controlled by a Lumix system which she's familiar with. Cutting back and forth between her clicking on files trying to figure out which file locks the control room doors to Grant and Ellie trying to keep the raptor from breaking in is unbearable tension!

    Very good Interview. It's inspiring to me to listen to the old time cutters and their Hollywood traditions. I have to say though it is a little disappointing how He states that his assistant basically does most of the manual work for him after a rough assembly. Someone like Walter Murch describes into great detail of every single step he takes to make changes on Adobe Premiere, so it's very easy to tell he actually does the hard work himself.

    Thank you for your comments. I don't know whether if that is exactly true and I am aware that you said that you work in the industry but that is really motivating for you to say that. I thought that if you were to get "somehting like 15 000 - 20 000 a week" for a good editor were never a reality. Because I have not done too much research on editors salaries. Thank you

  • @slantone
    @slantone 12 лет назад

    i work in the industry- in post production , and have worked with top editors and know how much michael kahn is paid. his rate is the highest of all editors mind you- and is 50 000 a week. i shit you not. his rate is far and away the highest of all editors though. an oscar winning editor on a big big film would like say avengers, would command somehting like 15 000 - 20 000 a week, and a top edtor without an oscar would commnand a rate of 8000 to 12 000 a week. mind you, there is only one

  • @slantone
    @slantone 11 лет назад

    it depends man- i have no idea - it depends on two things really- the budget of the film- and the resume of the editor. as an editors resume grows- so does their rate. but the budget of the film is also critical if not the critical factor. different editors get different packages, maybe it might be 2000 a week plus per diem of 150 a day plus business class flights if needed and a rental car if editing is done on locale, for a 60 hour week, or it might be 3000 a week flat, but no overtime.depends

  • @TechCeoify
    @TechCeoify 13 лет назад

    jasedotcom, the answer is - not anytime soon. In the recent DGA tribute to Spielberg (see it here - dga.org/Events/2011/08-august-2011/75th-Spielberg-Event.aspx ), James Cameron asked him the same question and got a hilarious response. I think he truly believes films adds something that digital can't and plans to go back to using a Moviola for Lincoln (War Horse and Tintin were done together and edited on Avid). It's worth noting that Janusz Kaminski is not a fan of digital, either.

  • @slantone
    @slantone 12 лет назад

    michael kahn and only he is paid generously as this due to his relationship with spielberg and his ovious talents. walter murch and shoonmaker are up there- though their films dont have the budgets- so they mightnet get as much. i spat out my avid when i heard how much he got paid, but its true. top cinematographers who have multiple oscars on a big film have such rates. alot depends on the budget of the film also though. and of course he dosent work all year- maybe a 12 week film each year now.

  • @CeruleanFilms
    @CeruleanFilms 13 лет назад

    @jasedotcom He won't. CineAlta is 1080p, which is the resolution of high-definition TV. Super 16mm has upwards of 2K. Red might be approaching 35mm in terms of definition but not in terms of native exposure latitude (Red Epic claims >12 stops but it uses HDR to achieve that).

  • @slantone
    @slantone 11 лет назад

    well lets face it- there are maybe 10 blockbuster films a year- and 10 editors for those films. there aren't many guys commanding those types of numbers.

    the union rate is the bare minimum on a hollywood union film, something like a D grade action film with unknowns. neverthless its a fairly good rate comparitively to other professional editors around the world. Im sure Kahn hasnt been paid union rates since Spielerg was an unknown.

    It may seem a lot but if y compare top people in any industry, making two million a year is common, for a surgeon, a banker, an architect, etc, why not an editor.

  • @slantone
    @slantone 11 лет назад

    depends man, on the editors rate based off his resume and the budget of the film. other things too, hours, overtime, per diems, travel, rental cars, alot of factors go into negotiating a deal. some editors are good negotiators and get good rates, above what oher similarly expiericned guys get too. looking at sinisters editors resume, its pretty extensive, so he d command a very good rate- i dont know what he d get but- i could say 4 to 8 g a week and still be way off, no way to tell.
