Because I spent almost 30 Years as a Member of a Rescue Organisation and Thunderbirds was a favourite Show of Mine, My Friends took liberties in the Naming of My Transport Vehicles.
My Car got the Nickname of “Thunderbird 1” because it carried Me and it was always the First of My Vehicles, to Leave Home Base and the First of My Vehicles to Arrive on Site, in any potential “Rescue Zone”.
One of its other Missions was to locate a “Safe Landing Zone” (a Big Parking Space) where My Trailer, “Thunderbird 2” (which always came behind) could ‘Park Up’ and deploy it’s Load, via the rear mounted drop down Ramp.
“Thunderbird 2” being the Heavy Lift Body, which carried and deployed another “Thunderbird Vehicle”.
My Electric Mobility Scooter became “The Quad” (because it had 4 Wheels) and was a Thunderbird Vehicle of Indeterminate Purpose, other than to carry Me and a few (Rescue) Supplies (Food and Drink mainly, but also some Camera Equipment).
The combination of a Loaded “Quad” on My Cage Trailer (“Thunderbird 2”) became known as “Pod 3”.
Bringing “Pod 3” thus meant that I was bringing My Electric Mobility Scooter with Me, Loaded onto “Thunderbird 2”, arriving at the “Rescue Zone” behind “Thunderbird 1”.
This whole situation caused (& still causes) much Humour among My Friends.

I was living in Okinawa in 1966 and Thunderbird was huge! I bought up every Thunderbird model released by Imai Kagaku and kept a scrapbook of photos gathered from Japanese boys' magazines. It was the first time I obsessed over a television series to that extent. I still have the original Tracy Island model after almost 60 years.

My dad grew up with Thunderbirds in the 70s. He taped the episodes when they reaired in the 90s and shared them with me. I was obsessed with Thunderbirds as a kid. I think the tracy island toy being out of stock was why my dad built me one from scratch. I still have it. Mine was definitely better than the store bought one.

The one thing that everyone forgets about Anderson. The man HATED puppets. My favourite quote from him was "I always wanted to do live action. So, when i was given Four Feather Falls, i thought "If i do this REALLY well, they'll let me do whatever i want." Nope, they just kept making me do things with puppets..."

I remember shooting out of bed on a Saturday morning to get my weekly fill of Thunderbirds as a kid! Innocent and great days they were, and a show about something positive that captured our imaginations. No shooting and killing like video games today. It made rescue and saving people's lives something cool and exciting. Perhaps that is why it still has such appeal with people after all these years?

Having been a fan of Thunderbirds since 1965 I agree that the 2004 fil missed the mark completly. Despite the awful remodelling of the craft you have Alan as a schoolboy, Tin-tin as a juvenile and that god-awful Firmin character, the son of Brains. Jeff leaves the base, which would be a no no in real situations.

I'm 18 now. When I was growing up (so about 5), I watched the old Supermarionation series on TV. Never saw the film until I was about 9, and, to be honest, didn't notice the redesigns that much. The new series has yet to grow on me, but it'll get there eventually.
Dad's fault. he was about 5 when the originals were on TV, and he got me and my brother into it. It was the bane of Mum's life though, cos I kept creating scenes across the floor in my bedroom.

  • @mrgobrien
    @mrgobrien 6 лет назад +6

The series was inspired by the 1963 Lengede mining disaster in (West) Germany. Many workers had become trapped underground and the world's media assembled as different attempts were made to get them out over time (a bit like with those Thai cave boys in 2018).
Watching on TV in Britain as things unfolded over several days, Gerry Anderson pondered making a TV show about a specialist `international rescue' team who could solve such situations anywhere.

I devoured every episode of "Stingray" and that barely matched the level of my childhood fandom of the original "Thunderbirds" -- the stories, the action, the onscreen scifi ships, and the mind-blowing modelmaking (and usually explosive un-making ) were everything I could've asked for in a TV show. I was really looking forward to the 2004 film and nearly cried when I saw it; someone got the idea, "It's a kids' show, make it relatable by making the young kids the heroes and while you do it strip away as much of the original spirit of the show so we can make more money off it with our version's spinoffs and merch!" Uggh. The new animated series is pretty good and definitely echoes the spirit of the original show... but all those incredible models & miniatures gave the original a certain je ne sais quoi that set it on a pedestal it resolutely refuses to vacate (although it shares a lot of space with "Captain Scarlet" for similar reasons).

I discovered Thunderbirds in the 90's when they were aired again although my father also adored it as a kid. It blew my mind, there just wasn't anything like it on TV. The weird technology, the awesome designs and the great toys... plus epic explosions. The original movies were pretty good to, that modern movie was an absolute disgrace.

I love the original puppet show, I grew up watching VHS copies. We even had that playset. I really enjoyed the 2004 movie (but I was really young, don't hate me). I watched the first season of the CGI series a while back, and I really enjoyed it. Fits very well with what I liked about the original, but updated it for modern audiences. To me, that's totally fine. I may not find all the episodes amazing, especially as they are marketed towards kids, but I like it.

A life long fan of the series and all the Anderson shows, the only thing I don't like about the latest incarnation is that it doesn't reflect the actual physics of the real world, which the original actually did. Modern CGI often does not replicate real acceleration, inertia, momentum, etc. and being an engineer, I see those things LOL The 60's was an impressive decade to grow up in!

I remember being kind of tired when we went; The movie started and just WOULDN'T END.. So, as my son watched the movie, i "cat-napped" through pretty much the whole thing, to such a point, I don't even recognize the kid in the film who, by this video, was a big part of it. Yes, the movie was a good "sleeper".. and my son, now short of 22) cannot even remember much of it anyhow lol...

Tbh I prefer the CGI reboot of Captain Scarlet although both shows are inferior to their originals but New Captain Scarlet had ideas I wanted to see explored in the original show, along with Motion Capture being more appealing than full CG, but it hasn’t aged amazingly. Having said that the 2015 Blu-Ray release looked superb! Plus having Captain Scarlet & The Return of the Mysterons with the original voices of Scarlet and Blue is a great bonus feature to include even if it’s only in 480p quality.

What about the Thunderbirds 1965 project? As part of the 50th anniversary in 2015, they made three new episodes based on audio episodes that were made during the original series and filmed them with the classic style. I loved watching Thunderbirds repeats during the 90s and I still love the show. Thunderbird 2 is my favourite and Virgil Tracy is my favourite character. Oh, and I preferred David Holliday's voice as Virgil than Jeremy Wilkin. Wilkin was okay, I had nothing against him as Virgil. But I just felt Holliday's deeper voice was better suited. May they both rest in peace.

Or do they only exist in their 50 mins formats? While you can probably tell where new footage were included in some scenes, it'd still be interesting to see how the first several episodes would've looked in their 25 mins presentations.

Thunderbirds epic moment? My vote is the oil refinery explosion at the end of title in every episode. _that_ is Thunderbirds!

_Thunderbirds_ started when I was 2, and I loved it from the start. I still do. I find it telling that Gerry Anderson had nothing to do with the _Thunderbirds_ film (which is utter crap), _Thunderbirds Are Go_ (ditto), but he _was_ involved with _New Captain Scarlet,_ which I do like.

Thunderbirds was meant to have been revived in the late 2000s but Michael Grade who was the chairman at ITV blocked it from happening because he didn't want ITV to make children's programming despite much of children's programming generating high income from international sales, merchandise and Cosgrove Hall which ITV owned who were producing programmes for other channels like the BBC, channel 5 and Nickelodeon.

You forgot about Thunderbirds1965 where they did 3 new episodes in the original way using the TV21 Thunderbirds records as the voices, sound effects and stories. They created new marionettes from the original moulds. F.A.B
P.S everything had guns in the 60’s - it was all cowboys etc on mostly.

I had never even heard of his series until reading your comment and looking him up! Despite us sharing the same titles I think our videos are quite different in style. I like his approached of being fast and quick for most things but I like to take a little more time with mine, thanks for making me aware of him though! I'll probably watch a few more :)

I read that the reason Thunderbirds Are Go failed was because people in the 60's thought why should they spend good money paying to see Thunderbirds on the big screen when they could watch it at home.

there was also an anime series in the early 80s called Thunderbirds 2086 - I remember watching a few episodes of that and I give credit to the soundtrack and how epic the animation looks despite its occasional stiff movements, but the entire cast of characters was replaced, as was the vehicle collection
But yeah, the classic series is the one I shall remember the most

    • @AdamMartyn

Johnno9989 compeltely forgot about 2086! I remember reading about it before but it slipped my mind! But yeah the classic and reboot was my main focus! ☺

I guess one can't fit everything in. Mind you, I don't think a lot of people remember 2086 that much.
BTW, I saw your review on 2016, totally agreed with it, and speaking of 2016 and Thunderbirds, can you believe the year killed off Sylvia Anderson as well?

That Thunderbirds player was the best toy I ever had.
I also liked the film back then but looking at it now... No.
I also watch the first episode of the revival, it was okay but nothing special, then there was that new Thunderbird unveiled and I was completely out, haven't watched one since.
    What makes you like it?

One other thing the 2004 film did was provide a decent reason for the Hood’s motive. The man International Rescue failed to save (the psychic powers ruin it though)
