  • OHMYGOD HEY!
    This week the 2022 Tony Award Nominations were finally announced and the results were very interesting.
    While some shows such as A STRANGE LOOP, PARADISE SQUARE, MJ and SIX were able to celebrate recognition in several categories, others such as FUNNY GIRL and DOUBTFIRE earned very few Nominations.
    Check out today's new video to find out why stars such as Beanie Feldstein, Sarah Jessica Parker, Debra Messing and Daniel Craig missed out on Nominations for their performances this season.

      The thing is that the directors do consider all SIX to be leading ladies… and cast them as such. So, I think them all being nominated together for the Olivier’s made sense. But considering how short the show is… it’s all a bit hard to call.

      Definitely need a best ensemble category, but Six wouldn’t be eligible for it, since it doesn’t have an ensemble. Just lead/featured roles.

  • @cboergesson
    @cboergesson 2 года назад +112

    The number of nominees in each category changes every year, because it is determined by the percentage of the votes it gets. A show or performance needs to have votes within 10% of the closest nominee. For example if there are 4 eligible shows and the vote gets split 35-35-25-5 there will be 3 nominations. If it gets split 30-30-20-10, there will be 4. Hope that helps explain things!

    • @cboergesson
      @cboergesson 2 года назад +10

      Caveat: This rule is only for bumping up “last place” entries. IE, If a vote is split 75-12-12-1, they nominate the top three, even though there’s a more than 10% gap between 1st and 2nd.

    I love that several of the acting nominees are making their Broadway debuts! Gabby Beans, Jaquel Spivey, L. Morgan Lee, Myles Frost, John-Andrew Morrison, and Kara Young! (And then, of course, well-known British performers like Adrian Lester and Ruth Negga and Sharon D. Clarke and Alfie Allen, and well-known American screen actors like Jesse Williams who are making their Broadway debuts, too, though I think the context there is a little different.)

    Thrilled for SIX. Of all the shows it's definitely the one that needed all those noms the least (massive hit here) but the fact that it maxed out on possible noms for the small show is insane. Book was always a stretch so that wasn't a snub and we knew the girls weren't getting nominated through no ones fault but the nomination committee. Hoping for score. ASL can win everything else. Just give Toby and Lucy one award dammit!!

    A few things to help you understand some of the rule for how the Tony's work over here. It all depends on the amount eligible for each category. They have different rules for all different amounts of eligible.
    First, Re: The 7 Actors for Leading Actor. When there are 9+ eligible, the top 5 are in automatically. Should there be a tie for the 5th place, all that score the same will get in. So that means that that there was a 3 way tie for 5th place for leading actor in a play.
    Second, Re: only 3 in revival of a musical. When there are 4 or 5 eligible, the top 3 get in automatically. If then the 4th and 5th places are within 10% of the 3rd place, they will get in as well. Which means if we assume that 3rd place was Music Man, Funny Girl did not come within 10% of the votes for it.
    Hope this helps.

    Back in the day, the Tonys did do one multiple nomination for the quartet of Billy Elliotts - and they won, and I imagine that the Tonys have chosen not to do that again. There was some minor griping afterwards that who could possibly compete with four cute little boys! So, the special award for the 23 Matildas (or however many there were) Someday you should do a reaction video to Neil Patrick Harris' incredible opening to the 2013 Tonys.

    Someone else said it, and I will echo the sentiment. It is bonkers to me that there isn't a "Best Ensemble in Musical/Play" category. It seems like it should be a given. Ensemble members are some of the hardest-working and most talented performers in any given show. They deserve just as much praise as the supporting and leading casts.

    I think one of the reasons SIX didn’t get any acting nominations is because there is no standout from the queens. All of them are equally matched acting wise, so there is no one that feels like the “star” by the end of the show.
    They should’ve nominated them all together like the Olivier, or at least nominate Abby and Sam (given that they are the ones with the heart wrenching ballads of the song)

Shively that is central to the story line. Both really shine during it. Also, if you have not listened to Joaquina Kalukango sing - Let it Burn... I have seen none of these performances, which should disqualify my comments, yet here I am to comment on the lone nod for Mrs. Doubtfire, Rob McLure. The gent is a firecracker onstage, I've seen him in both Something Rotten and Avenue Q. I think there's very little chance he can win this year, being in a show which did not get great reviews, but the "man in a dress" trope cannot be discounted even today. Santino Fontana was also in a mediocre musical about a cross-dressing man (Tootsie), and he took the Tony. I'm pleased McClure has earned a second Tony nod (his first was in the title role in Chaplin about a hundred years ago), but I'm sure this is not his year.

    • @MickeyJoTheatre

      I do feel for Rob as he is clearly a very hardworking and admirably talented actor, but if you consider Lauren Patten's Jagged Little Pill win last year there has been a lot of backlash for performances considered to be transphobic. I don't imagine Rob will be in this two horse race.

I have been in an LGBTQ chorus forever and we all meet somewhere to sing at each other every 4 years. 10,000 of your best friends descend on a city. Of course, over a week of concerts, socials, parties, eating in restaurants, etc. you get to know a lot of new people and see them fairly often......then you dont see them for 4 years unless you follow them on social media or develop a codependent crush on them. Anyway when you see someone that you met last festival, its too far to see their name tag and you know they recognized you, but you do not remember their name.
    "Haaaaaayyyyy, grrrrrrrrrl!!! You look great!"

      What is different is all the boys were playing the same role but evenly rotating the part. The producers put it up as all or nothing. So technically it went for the part which all of the voters agreed since they weren’t going to see each of them. Sound of Music all the kids were nominated as a group under Featured Actress. Side Show was the first to get a nomination for a shared Leading Actress nomination. The producers put all six women up individually for Leading when they should have put them up as a group for Featured. In any event the way the show is written doesn’t fit in really well with how the awards are broken down or the rules. Even when the committee makes exceptions it still doesn’t fit. Its a great show and glad they got in the Best Musical category for individual acting noms was always going to be tough

      It's where an actor sings a different note to what is actually written in the score - usually they opt up to make it sound more impressive at key moments in the show. There are a lot of examples in Wicked especially, but also some in traditional musicals like Phantom

    i will say as an individual who woks in the NY theatre industry who has also seen Company weather its behind the scenes politics or not Katrina Leink absolutely doesn't deserve to be on this list anyway so she's no big loss. And honestly after seeing Music Man Sutton absolutely SHOULD NOT be nominated in general! she played that role like she knew she was the WRONG vocal part, and like she had somewhere better to be all night long... its HIS show she's just in it to sell tickets and she knows it! It really should have been Kelly O'hara or Laura Bananti, who would also have sold just as well as Sutton along side Hugh Jackman! both of those women have opened their fair share of shows to STUNNING reviews ooooo or Kate Baldwin WHY wasn't it KATE BALDWIN?!?!?!?!?!?! sorry its just after waiting sooooo long to finally see the show she was honestly such a let down, and I've seen her in so much and LOVE HER but Sutton as Marion was a complete misfire!!!! and that's my rant lol also i can only imagine Macbeth wasn't nominated for best revival of a play because it genuinely wasn't good! the 2 of them were great im actually surprised Daniel Craig wasn't nominated, but overall the play was... NOT GOOD!!!!! kind of a conceptual disaster from top to bottom...

    I saw Paradise Square in its pre-Broadway run in Chicago and I'm so curious to know how it has changed. There was a lot of repetition in the lyrics and a ton of chanting choruses that just got boring. I hope they did a lot of work on the music, but they haven't released a cast recording yet so who knows. The choreography was really cool and that was truly the focal point of the piece. Overall, I felt meh about it but Joaquina was a huge standout and made the (kind of boring) music sound incredible.

    The six queen's producers screwed them by putting them forward as lead actresses.

    Sucks Fishbourne got snubbed, Daniel Craig didn't deserve one for this. It wasn't controversial that Macbeth didn't get nominated reviews weren't great.
    Plaza Suite snubbed is sad considering its making as much money each week as The Lion King.

    I only agree with 2 of the lead musical actress noms. Mare Winningham played more of a featured role (as did almost everyone in the show). I think producers strategically split her off to increase their chances at both actress categories, and as her character is the matriarch, she can more reasonably be submitted as a lead (though her character’s daughter drives more of the action and is more a lead.)
    I love Sutton Foster, and still have to admit her good if predictable performance of a bland character doesn’t hold a candle to the Six queens. I also normally enjoy Carmen Cusack, but her performance felt more like an impression than a portrayal, and unfortunately her show was god-awful; in fact, the worst musical I have ever seen on Broadway, drop kicking War Paint out of my top (bottom) spot. I could not WAIT for the show to end.
    Paradise Square might sound like a great show from the amount of nominations it received. But it is more accurately a good show with some major plot holes. Joaquina deserves her nomination because she makes you forget/overlook those issues through the strength and truth of her performance. And all I have to say about Sharon D. Clarke is that I damn well better be able to refer to her as TONY WINNER Sharon D. Clarke in the very near future. NO ONE came close to touching her performance.
    I agree with the non-nomination of Lenk primarily because of the strength this season and my belief the Six queens should have garnered some nods. I also wonder if some of the Tony voters saw Nikki Renee Daniels in the Bobbie role when she understudied - she was incredible.

    • @nicoletrudell2065
      @nicoletrudell2065 2 года назад +1

      Having watched the rest of the vid - Lackawanna Blues deserved a play revival nod over How I Learned to Drive, as it was a better production of a better play. Drive is playing now though, while Blues' run was last call, so I'm g!ad voters remembered the incredible performance of Ruben Santiago-Hudson. He deserves to win, but won't, because he's essentially telling his own story, and I doubt Tony voters will give him full credit even though he plays ALL the characters.
      It is CRIMINAL that Samantha Williams wasn't nominated for featured actress for Caroline or Change, but that show's limited run ended months ago, and wha's most remembered about it is Sharon's lead turn.

    First of all, Katrina Lenk is the weakest link in the revival of Company. She doesn't have the dazzling presence and voice Rosalie Craig brought to the role when we saw it in London. I hope to see it again once Lenk is replaced.
    Friends and I saw the pre-COVID try-out of PARADISE SQUARE in Berkeley, then the same friends saw the re-worked post-COVID try out in Chicago, and then NYC fiends saw what finally landed on Broadway. It sounds like what was over-plotted and flawed to begin with on the West Coast only got worse as it moved East. This show does have its fans, but I and most attendees I know were disappointed. It was promoted as a spiritual companion to RAGTIME, but it simply doesn't have the tunes to keep it interesting. The idea behind the score was to re-imagine and "broadway-ify" the classic songs of 19th century composer Stephen Foster (who shows up as a character in the show). Alas, despite excellent work from the cast and dance ensemble (OK, I loved the dancing, others complained it was messy and derivative), it is more or less a very loud snore.

    Caroline or change had the worst costumes, I'm shocked that got nominated. Same with SIX, whilst fun, they look like they are from a fancy dress shop.
    Skin of Our Teeth with close very soon, its grosses are awful. Lehmann Trilogy will win best play.
    Paradise Square getting 10 nominations is insane considering it got mixed to negative reviews. I think its the filler show, it will also close soon as its grosses are lower than what small plays earn.
    Mr Sarurday Night will also be snubbed on the night. A Strange Loop will win best musical, best book, SIX will get score if its lucky.
    Hangmen needs to win something (sadly it wont) to even stand of chance to of staying open, it's playing to quarter full houses.
    MJ will win choreography.
