The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Nothing beats the J5 debut performance of December 14, 1969. It’s not even close.
Us baby boomers were grateful for Marvin Gaye, we came of age during his era, lived it as teens/20s brought his albums and saw him live.
He really defined our generation
Unquestionably, MOTOWN was the "it" thing for me.
I had all their records and would go see them either at the Howard Theater in Washington, D.C.; the Royal in Baltimore. MD. and the Uptown in Philly.
Those were the Days my friend I thought it would Never end!! I'm so Grateful that my teenage years was so MOTOWN influenced❤❤❤❤❤
Each artists uniqueness was showcased effectively, and each group appeal to different members of the american family. Genius
I
Love all of these groups
They were all musical geniuses. ❤
That last note by David Ruffin on I'm losing you with the temptations is EVERYTHING
Those Were The Day's !!!! FABULOUS GROUP'S from way back then !!!! Love Everyone Of Them !!!! SUCH GREAT PERFOMER'S !!!!!!
Ain't nothin' like the Temptations!🔥🔥🔥🔥 All of em are Motown legends!
Unreal, the temptations were special on the Ed Sullivan show, Motown was special!
Classic Motown Era: The “MGM” of iconic, talented music and artists. ❤
I was born in 1974 but grew up on a lot of this still. I’ve always felt I should have been in my late teens or early 20s to fully love and experience this amazing time.
Love Motown, the best of the best! ❤️
MJ is cooler as a kid than most people are as adults
Hats Off To Ed Sullivan for having the Guts to give Any Talented Group Irrespective of Race or Color a Shot at "The Big Time " by Appearing on His Instant Star Making Show Back in the Day !!!....
Each of them had a profound effect on me. They all touched me in different ways.
They were all phenomenal performances! 🎼
Happy Saturday... thank you for sharing! 💖
The Supremes ❤❤❤
I want more of these compilations!
Goddamn I love David Ruffin's voice.
All original lineups all original stars!
Little Michael :)
And in an always-wonderful performance by all three Supremes we see, once again for those of us who know this performance, the falling earring from Diana's right ear landing neatly in her left hand...without skipping even one word of the song.
What a great bunch of clips! All of these performers were top-notch! I love old Motown! 🔥🔥😎💜
Excelente. Essas músicas são melhores do que 99% das músicas que são feitas atualmente
NO, In fact there is still new music that is great, but it is not popular.
Gladys had such a voice
Great stars, great singers.
Real Music ✨️🎶
The 1960's- The Golden age of rock & roll AND R&B!
Awesome!❤ l wish everyone was here to hug them and tell all the joy they gave to my youth and still to this day. It will never happen again.....so blessed to grow up in those years!
Motown really rocks till today.
Literally all of the Motown performances have been released on numerous Ed Sullivan DVD and VHS compilations over the years. If you are over thirty and are just now viewing these clips you can easily find the full performances. The Supremes with The Temptations is a newly released snippet. Perhaps the full will show up soon? Count Basie please..There is so much in the Sullivan vault I can’t imagine the forgotten or overlooked jewels.
Excellent summary!! I think it would be difficult to bring together more brilliant stars than these in 7 minutes of video... Motown and the Motown Sound is the living history of popular music, and especially soul music... The great stars who put a face and voice to the different labels of the "factory" enjoyed well-deserved popularity, but what would have happened to them without the magnificent producers and composers such as Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Norman Whitfield and many others? Under the spotlight on stages or in the shadows of recording studios, talent called for talent, that was Motown...
Well spoken, Thank-you ❤
Thank you MOTOWN and You Tube
Thanks for this video. It brought back allot of happy memories.
Have a nice day!
The best Music Ever created Motown Forever
I wish that Marvin Gaye had more appearances on this show. It’s a shame that he only performed once, and it wasn’t even live.
Nothing can touch Motown. Thanks for the memories
I adore the Temptations but an 11yo Michael Jackson is impossible to beat in my opinion.
How about Diana and Daivd's routine!
Charts a timeline of my family history as much as music.
The Supremes/Tempts segment in full is posted on this “Sullivan” Channel, too-great performance, I agree! ❤
Michael. ❤️
Ed Sullivan, Dick Clark, and Tony Bennet helped high talented black performers break into the business that may not had the opportunity at that time, without their assistance.
❤Tham all the best of best
Smokey!
The Ed Sullivan Show was a live Sunday night broadcast so there was no margin for error. The Jackson Five and Stevie Wonder were probably the only kids to appear on the show in its twenty-two year run.
Don’t forget Frankie Lymon
The show had all acts tape their segments on Thursday or Friday before the Sunday airing, in case any problems developed in the interim and the producers had to substitute the taped performance for the live one.
Marvin Gaye only made one appearance on the show, but Jr. Walker never appeared on the Ed Sullivan show.
As a matter of fact, Junior Walker & The All Stars did appear on HULABALOO on the NBC Network about a year prior to Marvin's only performance on Sullivan's show. I believe only the kinescope from that episode survived. Some years back, the Universal archives was caught in a massive fire, with some of the master videotapes for HULABALOO completely destroyed...😢❤
Wow! Some great performances.
Sem dúvidas o melhor da Motown
Need a Motown documentary
So many Motown documentaries and tv specials.
Standing In the Shadows of Motown and Hitsville: The Making of Motown are good ones.
Ok, agreed all were great. The only regret is the Pips in their silly Santa's elves costumes. What were they thinking? 🤔
Leprechaun outfits😂? I'm not sure but years ago I think someone mentioned that day was close to St. Patrick's Day. Of course Ed Sullivan was Irish. He probably loved their outfits 1:19 😂. Ed was a great person. I❤ this song by Gladys Knight and the Pips.
David Ruffin best frontman of The Temptations 💯%😎
Yeah the Marvin Gaye performance seemed pre-recorded and inserted. Is there even a Ed Sullivan clip introducing Marvin Gaye?
I'm losing you did it for me
Look how sexy this guy's are, remember how it was back then, we played those recorders in the back yard and danced and danced, wish it would come back, what good times we had, the groups were so sexy and made my ❤️ best even faster, God rest the souls of all those Motown singers, once in a life time.♥️♥️♥️♥️🙏
Linda recordacao 🎶🎼🎵👏👏
That’s Smokey Robinson was / is a good looking man lol
And still is! ❤
Good, except Stevie Wonder’s version of For Once In My Life HAS to be in there-take down Martha and Vandellas or the quick version of My Girl
V.Niec🎸🥁🎺🎷🎶💐❤️
Michael 1
Who was the one younger than Michael? Always thought he was the youngest boy.
He was actually not the youngest member, Michael was. His name is Marlon Jackson, he was one year and half older than Michael. He was a premature baby
Michael Jackson was born in 1958 , this Ed Sullivan performance was in 1970, that makes him 12 years old at the time of this performance.
I want you back...May 14. 1969. He was 11 years old. ❤
@@ZuzcojDecember 14, 1969. Actually the May 10, 1970 was before his 12th birthday too.
Back when he was a normal person/kid. It's a pity what happened to him later on in his life, for him and the victims of his pedophilia.
@@notinmyUSMC He was never ''normal,'' LOL! ''Normal'' kids don't sing, dance, and perform that way.
@@notinmyUSMCHE NEVER WAS PROVEN A PEDOPHILE! I CAN SEE CLEARLY YOUR RACISM! ITS SHINING BRIGHTLY!
Who is that good-looking kid singing lead for the😅😅😅
I realize this is three weeks later, but they still haven't posted any of the Stevie Wonder performances and I think they would collect a lot of views. Therefore, this video is inaccurate.
How about sonny james running bear!
What is up with Gladys Knight and the leprechauns? Who on earth made that costume or was it Saint Patrick's day?
Why the hell wasn't Stevie Wonder included? SO DISRESPECTFUL.
Maybe because none of his Sullivan performances have officially been released on RUclips by the Sullivan show archive administrators? And maybe there are legal issues, as such, at play? Sheesh! Think a little why don't you.
I'm a European and i love motown music. But what happened to black music? It was so good in the 60s 70s and 80s, but nowadays it's all garbage. Rappers or beyonce suck compared to the olskool stuff. Black people should make soul and funk music again.
What is going on with the outfits GLADYS KNIGHT 'S AND HER PIPS GREEN MERRY MEN are wearing 😂 how AWFUL, who chose this style for them!!!
Ed Sullivan rip you were the man
