    The grannie start sounds like the Divco milk truck that made deliveries to us. But really this is a wonderful prestige marquee for motoring years ago , and beautifully restored.The colors are very nice too.

    I'll bet you would be hard pressed to find any craftsmen today that could build one of those from scratch. Can you imagine the skill, knowledge and effort needed to build this masterpiece?

    As a huge packard fan. This was pure joy to me. As close to a ride in one that I may ever get. Thank you for this wonderful posting.

    Incredibly elegant motor car.Our 1928 R-R Phantom 1 family owned 50 years sounds very much the same and as others have said , you get to ' feel ' when to change gear - and also know when it is all going to go ' wrong '!. Busy traffic can of course affect the situation far from the ideal one, so when people are critical, they do not appreciate it is more tricky than one would think !.

    Hey @RideswithChuck I have been driving heavy Duty trucks with non synchronized transmissions for over 40 years.. I can teach you how to shift .. float gears with no clutch or how to double clutch .. there are ways to shift with out grinding gears..

    Even into the fifties lots of cars and trucks had that whine, My Volvo Amazon 1967 did as well. Actually you get to love it after a while,

    Chuck, Thank you so very much with this explanation and ride of this classic Packard 733. We do not see these beautiful creations by classic car manufacturers very much in person. At least here on RUclips, we get to see and dream about these wonderful cars of yesteryears. Thanks for your upload.

    Duesenbergs made a similar whine when in the gears. Love the sound.

      All cars did in that era if they had straight cut gears.. .. I would much rather have straight cut gears and strength over helical cut gears that put more load on the bearings..

    I see that you are double clutching but need a slightly longer pause in neutral with the clutch out before fully depressing the clutch pedal and engaging the next gear to minimize (prevent) damaging clashing.

    I'm in love, afaik Packard wasn't reknown for it's cutting edge technology, but mostly for it's luxurious comfort and certainly they knew how to produce a handsome machine.

      The 1931 sales brochure states their attitude: "Nearly every one would rather buy a refinement or improvement than an experiment. The new Packards are not an experiment in any sense of the word."
      Packard buyers wanted and expected very conservative and over-engineered cars, both in styling and in technology. But they also wanted plenty of smooth, quiet and reliable horsepower, and Packard engines delivered that. In the years when they were ascendant, their engines usually had the highest horsepower ratings available in their price class. They were also eerily quiet compared to more ordinary cars.

    Great music!
    Surprisingly, one can still find a well-preserved (or pretty well restored) Packard for sale for more than reasonable money. Too bad I don't live in US and my country would charge me 3x the price in taxes if I ever decide to buy one...

    Hep2jive, don't dis the Packard, dis the driver. Packard gears were hand-lapped at the factory - only Rolls-Royce in England and Packard here in the 'States did it this way. It was expensive and time-consuming and a Packard gearbox should NEVER sound like this (or shift like this!). If I had paid what this guy must have paid for the restoration, I would be making a big stink at the restorer's shop.

      Years ago, we had a '28 545 2-Window sedan and the gearbox was MUCH quieter than in this example. It shifted smoothly without having to double clutch. This gearbox in this car needs to come out and be overhauled by a Packard expert who knows what they are doing....!!

    That Mack coming up at 3:19 isn't much bigger but probably handles a lot easier. ;-)

  • @michaelXXLF

    Until the 1950s, cars equipped with a 3-speed gearbox often had the reverse and the first gear done with straight-cut gears and only second and third with helical gears. Straight-cut gears are cheaper to produce and don't excert any thrust along the gears' axis but create a characteristic whining noise and are thus only used for slow speeds.

    nice car, though i dont like that annoying sound it makes at all. my 47 pontiac makes that 'packard' noise when i start from stop to low, but it doesnt do that for the whole drive. sounds like a tornado siren!

    It looks beautiful - and no disrespect, but my goodness is it meant to have so loud a gear whine in all gears?. Listening to that would be wearisome on any journey.. I wonder what has changed in gear design of modern cars that they don't make such a whine - perhaps bevelling?

    • @jimervin387
      @jimervin387 7 лет назад

      That must be a non syncromesh transmission, just like my Model A Ford. But my Model A is only noisy in second gear.

      Old straight cut gears, not helical cut

    • @richardkryston2990
      @richardkryston2990 Год назад

      @@calgaryjaglapping the gear teeth by hand reduces that noise significantly. The transmission needs work.

    I really don't think the rear end should whine that loud. I know most old cars do make a whining sound in second but not that loud. That's annoying.

    Learn to shift. Every time this guy changes gears, crunch. Every time. This was not how an accomplished driver handled such cars. If you "felt" the car, you didn't always have to double clutch. And wear a pair of big boy pants.

      Actually, double clutching was required only on downshifts. For upshifts it was necessary to wait in neutral for the exact time to permit the gears to slow down. Some cars had a clutch brake to slow the gears down when the clutch was fully depressed making it possible to upshift quickly without waiting in neutral. But you're right; a skilled driver would have been able to avoid the crunch when shifting. I cringed every time I heard the crunch knowing that he could be causing some damage.

    • @dlwatib
      @dlwatib 7 лет назад +1

      Nobody is an expert shifter with a non-synchronized transmission these days. Who has one for a daily driver?
      And who owns this car? The guy wearing the shorts or the guy questioning his sartorial taste?
