He tuned the guitar so that it would be easy to turn while playing. If you notice the D has the tuning peg roughly perpendicular to the headstock and the E is roughly parallel. Easy to quickly retune like that

@@KonradWadenhauer There's videos where he teaches some of the riffs, and showcases the pedal board he used. Impressively enough, it really was about his foot switch skill.

Massive respect for this video - we've all sat here talking about how many takes this must have taken. And to do it all in one take too!! You have got skills man!! If you ever move to England & want a job..... !!!
@@loststranger5398 What is so wrong about it? He played it little differently and is a bit sloppy but that is ok for rock and roll. Most of the stuff sounded good.
Knowing that many riffs is one thing. Being able to switch gears and have "the feel" of each come through is quite another. You should most certainly do session work if that sort of thing interests you. Thank you so much for bringing some funky jams to my normally quiet campsite just before dark.
Watched this video several times when it was launched on YT... every now and then I come back here to listen again, and everytime I listen to one of these songs I immediately think on the next riff and feel obligated to come back here and listen to it again... lol this have such a huge impact on the guitar community.
10 years ago i watched this video and bought my guitar. i heard only 4 songs of the list, and didnt know how to play, now i can play every riff here, and love most of this songs, this is the most influential youtube video in my life, thanks a lot, im speachless (sory for my bad english im from russia)
Legendary video!! Still has me coming back, checking it out. And the tone is truely unique in way, but also encapsulates all of the classic vibes. Really impressive considering the drive stage consists of a TubeScreamer and a JHS Foot Fuzz into a low powered tweed. 👍👍👍
I was 13 years old when I first came across this video. I sat there with my mouth open and admired how cool Alex plays all these riffs. Now I'm 21, I've been playing guitar for 6 years, but I still admire this video.
@@chicagomusicexchange how do you get your guitar to sound different throughout the video is it when you do something on your guitar or is it a good pedal or something?
I saw this video 3 months when it was uploaded here in YT and even downloaded it on my laptop. Now 9 years old and currently in a pandemic and still watching it. 🤘
Hey Alex - I know it’s 10 years later but in case you occasionally check comments: I particularly like your ordering so that keys make great sense and your interesting transitions when key changes come. Great composition! The ‘editing,’ that is, where you chose to get into and out of riffs was great, consistently interesting and occasionally surprising. Fun! Your use of effects was great and your non-Strat tones were very good. Your pickup switching was flawless. I think many beginning and intermediate guitarists don’t spend enough time practicing the tech side of effect/setting/pickup changes. You certainly do. The added bass notes in Satisfaction were very nice; your SRV tone was great; thanks for picking Thunderstruck instead of legatoing it; the switch to slide in Seven Nations Army was slick. A pleasant time is guaranteed for all.
The fact that he executes this without any noticeable breaks is so impressive to me. Like each riff in itself is not that difficult (except for a few), but the fact that he pulls off this pretty seamless medley with no noticeable errors all in one take, switching to drop D midway through, and having amp modifications and other accessories… I’m watching this trying to calculate how many hours he had to practice to get this routine right, and he deserves a thumbs up at the very least from everyone who clicks.

It was in the description
Dude changed the tuning in between playing like it's nothing 😶
(in-between a riff)
I am speed
Am... not really, because some of us may cant tune guitar by ear and they don't know to do that fast, like someone like me :D
its not that hard actually, going from standard to drop tuning, just got to remember position of a E string tuner knob for standard and drop tuning
Muscle memory...
Jeez, coming from Mozart that means alot
I used to watch this video when it just came out, I'm twenty now and I watched it when I was about eight and absolutely infatuated with music and the guitar.
I cannot describe how much joy and nostalgia this video gives me, Alex will always be a guitar god to me!
When you're scrolling through guitar hero's music list
The perfect description of this video
Exactly
😂😂
Pretty accurate
Greatest comment I’ve ever seen in my life 😂😂😂😂😂
6:36 The fastest drop D tuner in the west
thats almost more impressive then playing all the songs lol
Me who still uses a tuner 👁👄👁
definitely had that one pre marked but it's still darn impressive
Geez ! I was just thinking the same thing !
Dropped it like it was hot, then picks up a slide lol
Why is everybody making such a big deal over what he DIDN'T play? This was a delight.
THANK YOU!
Rebornblader he forgot freebird XD
Rebornblader Yea lol, also, 8:48 made me die! Sorry, I just love Rage Against the Machine.
Rebornblader I agree! Because it's very difficult to play 100 different riffs/part of songs in just 12 minutes. And that was great!
Rebornblader people always want a reason to complain :P
I started playing guitar at 14 when I joined my highschool guitar class, I remember watching this video countless times to the point where I can still remember the exact riffs one after another
It is now 7 years later and I am almost finished with college and am about to pursue my dream of becoming a career pilot, time really does fly, but I will always remember those highschool days of practicing guitar and coming back to this video

One of the most impressive guitar videos I’ve seen. The fact that there was a change to drop D, slide etc. is so cool.

ZanDaMan 😩👌
Honestly though I doubt he would do it again he would just change the title
ZanDaMan k
maybe it was originally supposed to be 101 riffs? :O
he messed up steady as she goes too, the last note was flat
The way he played Sweet Home Alabama into Walk This Way appealed to a part of me I didn't know existed.
The transition was really good but I wish he would have played a little more sweet home Alabama
Sweet home Alabama’s transition into Walk this was was beyond smooth
Legendary video!! Still has me coming back, checking it out. And the tone is truely unique in way, but also encapsulates all of the classic vibes. Really impressive considering the drive stage consists of a TubeScreamer and a JHS Foot Fuzz into a low powered tweed. 👍👍👍
The transition from Sweet Hone Alabama to Walk This Way is great!
I thought that! Genius ;)
I think he should've played more of sweet home Alabama
+Trumpet Guy yea me too
Sweet Home Alabama is overplayed. What about songs like Freebird or Simple Man?
Finneyyy Simple man is also overplayed
The transition from 'Sweet Home Alabama' to 'Walk This Way' was soooo smooth.

right! how did he even do that, like, walk this way was... alright, but **smoke on the water tho**
it would have been better if he played it right. BOTH STRINGS TOGETHER, not strummed.

Hey Alex -
I know it’s 10 years later but in case you occasionally check comments:
I particularly like your ordering so that keys make great sense and your interesting transitions when key changes come.

@@tens0r884 😆
Its actually less likely to get demonitized, because if there's more than one claim on the video, no one makes money
It’s crazy how i watched this video years ago, and i still remember it in order. Almost like it’s one single song in my head.
The most impressive part is that he could still do sultans of swing after 40 other riffs beforehand
for real
was i the only one who got chills when he started playing purple haze ?
Hafeezur Rahman.no.great song
Hafeezur Rahman I did too
Im learning to play it and Hendrix is super fun to play because he has all that extra cool sounding shit
yah, lol
This reminds me of when you don't really fancy listening to music so you listen to the first 20 seconds of a song and then change it
The fact that he executes this without any noticeable breaks is so impressive to me.
