  • From the Ravel album. The complete song. Over four years ago, I posted this song but had to split it into two parts because of RUclips's time restrictions. Now, it is possible to post it in its entirety for our listening pleasure.
    From the Ravel album (1979).

Hi Karin, I almost cried reading your post. I have a Very Similar Connection with this piece. It was actually Tomita who introduced me to Debussy and Stravinsky believe it or not. In Pennsylvania, where I was raised we did have a fairly strong music culture, although because it was founded by Germans and was thoroughly Lutheran most of the music we were exposed to, at least the High Brow Classical repertoire was largely Bach and Handel (and other things derived from that lineage). It’s a very complicated story and Im not writing my biography here. Suffice to say there was NO FRENCH MUSIC and very little Itallian either. There was a smattering of Russian music that came our way, but only things like Rimsky-Korsakov or Glinka. Some Tchaikovsky I guess. That was good. But I Certainly I had NO EXPOSURE TO STRAVINSKY OR PROKOFIEV, nor to Bartok nor as I said ANY DEBUSSY, RAVEL, nor Berlioz nor Saint-Saëns. And Certainly no Erik Satie. There are of course many other composers I could name but that’s not the point here..
It was only when I moved away to The City that I discovered the Music of the Heart. It was actually an orchestral reading of Daphnis et Chloë (by whom I don’t remember) that we played Over and Over the first night I spent with my future wife…. But my first hearing of the Children’s Corner Suite, Snowflakes are Dancing, The Girl w the Flaxen Hair, Passapied, et al was ALL courtesy of Tomita. And believe it or not, the same with The Firebird. Yes, I discovered STRAVINSKY through listening to Tomita. I guess it would’ve been a life-changing experience either/any way so in a way it doesn’t matter that much. The Rite of Spring really blew holes in my head…. I listened to that piece again recently after many years. It was within a Made for TV movie about the whole elaborate evolution of that ballet called Riot at The Rite, (it’s on RUclips, check it out. It’s well worth it.) which focused as much on Nijinsky and the impressario Diaghilev and even including Nicholas Roerich as on Stravinsky, (strangely 4 names all immortalized by that Unprecedented Artistic Event). Seeing that movie just last year after Decades of Living With Stravinsky’s work filled in some glaring gaps in my understanding of the history of The Arts in Paris, especially as La Belle Epoque exploded into The Great War and the concomitant Dadaist Movement. In truth The Rite of Spring was just the opening volley in that Violent Destruction of Everything that came before it, in Dance, in Stagecraft, and Especially in terms of Music. In a way, no one even Knew before The Rite how much of a Leading Role the subtleties of modern music then being born were going to have from this point forward; especially as regards Stravinsky’s new and unprecedented use of multiple time signatures, sometimes each evolving a separate “Story Line”, the one contradicting the other. And this was/is used to such great dramatic effect also with his use of dynamically shifting Key Signatures as well. The score of The Rite of Spring was UTTERLY WITHOUT PEER at the time of its premier. It’s no surprise that it would’ve sparked a Riot. The only piece that eventually stood up to The Rite was Messiaen’s La Quatuor pour la Fin de Temps, given its Premier in a POW camp in 1943.
Sorry if I went off track a little bit. You made me think of several things. And I didn’t even talk about Ravel.
      Oh, and I’m 65 years young…

i would listen to this one and the whole album back in 1979, when my parents had gone out. turn all the lights out, chill and feel all the emotion, which inspired me to buy synths/mellotron etc....and produce similar music inspired by tomita, such awesome interpretations for sure.

I am now 56 but have loved this album since i bought it as a teenager from Boots in Worthing! Honest truth? I bought it because i loved the mesmerising picture on the cover and i knew it was electronic music, but i had no idea what i was going to be listening to, and that's the truth. It was in the heady days when i so loved David Sylvian, Riuichi Sakamoto, etc, and i just hoped i would like it with my hard earned quid's. I love it as much today as i did in 1981.
