  • Amy Winehouse is one of the most iconic artists of the 21st century. A fatal addiction that would eventually take her life.
FEATURING: Dr Peter Hughes, Professor Jennifer Otter Bickerdike, Professor Jason Payne James, Amy Winehouse, Mitch Winehouse, Blake Fielder-Civil
Her sound, style and honesty set her apart from the rest as truly one of a kind. Thanks to her monumental album Back To Black in 2006, she went on to be one of the most award-winning superstars and the face of British music. But the constant fame and attention came at a price. With the non-stop, year-in, year-out war between her and the media, Amy Winehouse found herself caught up in life-threatening addictions, class A substance abuse, self-harm and toxic relationships. Witness the rise and fall of Britain's most iconic star and the lead-up to her devastating death. Her drinking continued to get worse, causing her career to suffer and causing an addiction that controlled her daily routine.

My mom was once interviewed for a study when the interviewer asked “what do you think when you hear the word AN ADDICT?” And my mom said “CARE”.. the interviewer were SHOCKED and said that my mom were the first out of 50 people who had said anything like that and everyone had said something like “disgusting, shameful, burden..” and so on… love you mom and thank you for teaching me that when I was young..❤

I just wanna also add and say that alcohol is one of the worst of the worst! I've made some of the dumbest decisions of my life due to alcohol. It enabled me to do the harder drugs.. and while already being drunk your then very very closer to OD-ing. and I did. I was took to the hospital and brought back to life! I got my second chance at life.. "a new life" that I'm very grateful. Some people can handle alcohol... But I'm the kind that can't. It's just as worse as any other drug because of how dangerous and reckless it makes me. 8 years sober....

No, he probably loved her, & still does, but knew they were doomed. He defintely enjoyed the spotlight, & even with the movie recently, seems to like that people are talking about him again. BUT why should he suffer for the rest of his life because she died? That's beyond messed up!!
He is NOT responsible for her drug use. It doesn't matter that that she may have not found that path without him. It was because of something broken in HER. He suffered from her demons just as much as she did his. It was well known she was abusive.
My boyfriend of almost 4 years has a meth addiction. I have never touched it, & never will. I have my own addictions, but they are mine. Unless my boyfriend put a gun to my head, if I took up meth, it would be on me. No one else.

@@kaitlyngault3987 if you think he loved her then you don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m a fan I would not watch a movie about her because I know for a start she would be disgusted that her dad even made one.
It’s annoying when people believe the shit that’s in a movie. The only movie I would watch would be one that Amy made herself about herself. It does matter that she may not have found the path without him. He needed her to become addicted so that she could buy it for him too. If he loved her then he would not have preyed upon her vulnerabilities.
He knew she idolised him and he manipulated her. That is not love. Amy had been 2 years clean of class a drugs before she died. She also hadn’t had alcohol for 7 weeks. It’s very sad what she did to herself we’ve lost a great talent and her family have lost a daughter and sibling.
Blake in my opinion was the devil in her life. And when you say it was well known that she was abusive was it? I didn’t know that she was abusive. Are you trying to make her look bad as an excuse for that monster that she married?
She may have been vulnerable due to her dad cheating on her mum with his secretary and Blake knew that. He even had the cheek to say the only time he spent money on her was the day she first met him. He won £600 on the horses and bought her a drink.
Let’s not forget on the documentary we heard him say “I’m a handsome fella I don’t know what I saw in her” or words to that effect. It seems you are comparing what you would and wouldn’t do someone else. Amy isn’t you.

I don’t know. I think he truly loved her too, but was irresponsible in his love for her and used her for sure, played games etc. at the end of the day, no one knows but Blame and Amy and it’s just incredibly sad that Amy died before she had the maturity or the right help and support to get her through. Such a sad story. I adored her. I loved how she just didn’t give a shit. She wasn’t fake and at the end of the day she was a human being. ❤

@@kaitlyngault3987love that you have insight and you are taking responsibility for your own challenges. You can never blame anyone else, there is always a reason for why people take drugs, it’s not the drugs fault either, it’s why people have an addiction, that is because people try to fill a void or fix something broken. I’ve had my battles and still do, only I can find the strength in order to beat them. My underlying problem is my depression, anxiety and eating disorder. This all comes from undiagnosed adhd, childhood trauma etc. it’s not an easy fix it’s very complex and those who have never struggled with mental health problems or addiction really will never understand. The other thing is the stigma that goes with the addiction and seeking help isn’t as an easy as people say it is. You never think addiction will happen to you and it takes a while to realise that you even do have addiction problems. I wish you all the very best and hope that in time you will find peace and happiness without your addictions xx ❤.

Something about the depth of love for the music when your into Jazz, and especially if you're a musician, it gets lonely because you can't take someone inside you to feel what you're feeling. And put drugs into the mix.

I don't want anyone to throw stones, but I feel your parents are your psychological, moral, self-esteem compass. It starts at birth, and it continues. Your parents shape your brain of how you would live your life and mostly feel about yourself. The balance of the family is important, but any troubles or trauma affects the brain. I don't really feel that Amy had a close relationship and unconditional love from her parents, and when she felt insecure, she did not have the power to stand alone and be strong. When the snake 🐍 comes (a man) to put or bring you down in any way. You need to have enough self-esteem to walk away from any scars. Amy has a great gift. And she could have had a very beautiful life.

Nurture AND Nature, dear. I've seen fantastic families have a mentally ill child and no matter how they've done everything right (no one does 100% right), one of their kids goes off the rails. Regardless of how much support, love, or assistance with medications and therapies, some cannot be brought back from the brink and go the way of drugs, addiction, and death whether due to overdose or intentional suicide. Everything in this documentary is speculation in regards her relationships - we were not physically present to see it first hand. We cannot stand and blame anyone. It's a combination of a fragile soul exposed to situations that she was not strong enough to endure: drugs, celebrity, papparoti, family and friends who exploited and didn't know how to help or didn't initially know the depths of her issues, until it was too late. She is not the first, nor will she be the last tortured soul performer who's lives were snuffed out by alcohol and drug addiction. Nor can we say that she wouldn't have succumbed to exactly the same fate had she been just an ordinary non-celebrity. Drive down skid row of any city. You'll see exactly the same situation with nameless, faceless addicts.

I have been around a Lot of drugs, and only one or two are anywhere near as scary as alcohol to me. It's insane that it's the most socially acceptable substance. Very few drugs make you mean, or act like somebody different than yourself, or make choices you would Never make otherwise, or make you forget everything that happened, like alcohol does.
Also, sadly, I think one of the worst things for Amy Winehouse was having the father she had. I think there's a good chance she would still be alive if she had a real dad.

She didn’t have the support system she was supposed to have in her life. She was amazing in her own rite and didn’t need to be questioned about her looks or anything she did not want questioned. I will always love you, Amy. And my birthday is September 19 so when I found out hers was September 14, it made sense that I have her music in my life.💜❤️💜

One can go to a supermarket and buy a trolley full of vodka and that's completely legal, whilst only one bottle of vodka can kill an adult.
But one cannot purchase three packets of paracetamol because our nanny state cares so much about our health!
But in reality they don't care if we buy lots of alcohol, as the government gets the tax from it, which amounts to many billions per year.
They don't get any tax from the drugs, therefore they're illegal!!
More people die from alcohol than from drugs, and alcohol addiction makes them try drugs!
Morrisons supermarket had moved the alcohol section from the right back to the front of the shop!!! I heard the stuff saying that since they moved the alcohol to the front, the sales went up by 75%!!!
Where is our government to regulate this?
    They simply do not care.

Okay, heres the Cliff Notes version ~
Amys father left when Amy was very young, he packed everything up while she was at school one day & moved completely across town with his new mistress.
He basically started a whole other family, like wee Amy, her brother & Mum never even existed!!
That broke Amy something fierce. She had serious trust & abandonment issues now, all before age 10.
Even though her & her brother were close, he was a bit older & was off at school. Her Mum worked all the time, so Amy was a latchkey kid.
She was very street smart & grown for her age. Mum never punished her when she acted out, she mainly kept silent about everything bc she felt guilty, and she just wanted to keep the peace & keep Amy happy. So, for the rest of her life, she was searching for true loyalty & unconditional love.
Amy's Nan was the only person that could control her, keep her in line...when she passed away, that was the beginning of the end for Amy.
She self medicated with booze & drugs.
Alot of ppl don't know that even though Amy was a musical genius & talented singer/lyricists, she had terrible stage fright. She would drink before going on stage to calm her nerves. It only
snowballed after that. The paparazzi hounded & tormented her, as well. She had a serious eating disorder & body dysmorphia in her teens, and an untreated type of bipolar or manic depressive disorder, as well. So half of her short life was her trying to self medicate her problems away - her phobias, depression, fears, etc.
You also have to remember - Amy was signed to a major label at age 17/18 - she basically became semi-rich & famous, literally overnight.
She had no real mentors or anyone to guide her in the right direction, she was very strong willed and put forth this tough persona as if she was handling life & had no problems.
Her Dad (and Blake) came round & wormed their way into her life, and basically used her as a cash cow. Amy was just happy to have them around, but they were toxic.
Amys Mum is a real sweetheart, but she also really failed her - even though she raised two kids, paid all of the rent, the bills, school tuitions, etc.
She worked long hours as a Pharmacist and was hardly ever home. When she was, she didn't know how to handle Amy & would just placate to her & let her do what she wanted bc it was easier to deal with. She called Amy her Tiny Tornado when she was a wee one, bc she would run through the house & tear everything up.
Alot of ppl did try to help her in the end, but it was much too late. Alot of celebs - like Bryan Adam's, Bruce Willis, Nas, QuestLove from the Roots, Mark Ronson, one of her producers, Salaam Remi, her band mates, her God Daughter - they all tried, and even Amy did try. She went to an Addiction Specialist, she weaned completely off of hard drugs and was really trying to get on the right track. But the drink & her eating disorders wrecked her tiny frame. Her heart couldn't handle that last binge. It's really sad. She only put out a handful of albums and was one of the most talented singer/songwriters of our generation. Supposedly, her one producer has a few unreleased songs hidden away in a safety deposit box. He says they are mind blowing

What strikes me is how skinny that poor girl got in the few years before her death. Even as her income grew tremendously Amy seems to have denied herself nourishing food. She had a self-destructive impulse that she could have "grown out of" if she had not been so harassed by the trappings of her sudden fame. That young woman had an extraordinary talent. She had a once in a generation voice. Just so soulful and emotionally interpretive. I wish she had gone away from the stage for a few years, maybe set up housekeeping in the country with supportive friends and gotten into a healthier lifestyle pattern. 27 years old. I still remember hearing of her death and disgusting myself with how my brain automatically thought: "No surprise." Damn. She was a magnificent singer.

The parents seemed pretty out of it, but of course, many of us have had worse. She most likely experienced some childhood trauma as a kid, also had mental illness, and was self medicating to treat it. She needed real treatment, and she didn't get it. This all did not just happen when she started performing. It got worse due to people depending on her for money, she found an addict - no surprise there, and it all snow balled. Nature/nurture.
