Wow!!! Absolutely brilliant reaction-video on so many levels. So glad youngsters genuinely appreciate a great Abba song (I kind of thought the younger generation only listened to rap - nothing wrong with that if you do). I was truly thrilled to see you bopping your heads up and down, to the left and to the right. I am 56 now and grew up with Abba, dancing to their songs in the boogie-night discos of the late '70s early '80s. As you can imagine, I am so pleased Abba has recently released a new album 39 years after their last one. I would love to see you do more reaction videos of Abba. Without wanting to exaggerate, your video has actually renewed my faith in humanity!!!
My next-door neighbor grew up collecting the 45s and albums of the hits as they came out in the '50s, '60s, and '70s, following the charts on Top 40 radio. He still has hundreds of his records, and says rap & hip-hop sounds like "caveman chanting". Imagine if your ears have become accustomed to music like this throughout the decades, it can be hard to adjust. Meanwhile self-declared rap & hip-hop fans on RUclips seem to like ABBA and other oldies artists.
The circus scene was set up when ABBA's application to the city of London to use the famous Piccadilly Circus area for the video was rejected. Super Trouper was the last song recorded for the album. Michael B Tretow, the long standing engineer said he was most happy with the Super Trouper album because he felt everything came together so well. They had all the equipment they needed and didn't want for anything.
Also: don't worry about this being your second experience of the song! Tbh I lowkey think this is probably your best reaction yet, because you've had time to digest and appreciate all the layers! You guys should do second reactions of more ABBA songs!

Indeed. It was their 3rd album that was the Best seller of the year in the UK. The ST single was the 4th best seller in 1980. The single and album had only been released a matter of weeks, making the year-end sales even more impressive
Abba had hits in USA: Dancing Queen number 1, Take A Chance On Me 3, Waterloo and Winner Takes It All top 10. Name Of the Game, Fernando and Knowing Me Knowing You all top 20. Frida's solo single I Know There's Something Going On was in year top 20 for best sellers in USA in 1983.
'I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do', and 'SOS' were both No.15 Hits in the USA. 'Does Your Mother Know' - No.19 in the USA. 'Super Trouper' was a No.45 Hit in the USA - so a minor Hit there. But, No.1, (3 Weeks), in the UK, and over a Million UK copies now sold. ABBA's 2nd UK Best Selling Single, after 'Dancing Queen'.
The reason they keep showing that spotlight is because the spotlight is called a "super trouper". It's means a bright spotlight which is why they say about the "beams are going to blind me"
My father worked for the company that made them. He brought the album home when it was released. They eventually got rid of the album for religious reasons, but the damage is done. I still like them.
Sweden, Sweden, Sweden, what talents you create! What is it with this little country in the North? Answer: one of their treasures is / has been that they have a natural aptitude for singing and for music in general. It is in their genes. See for example "allsång på Skansen", Stockholm, where they meet and sing together once a week in the summertime. And their people's soul goes very, very deep. ABBA was one of the very first artists to be known outside of Scandinavia. A big hug from Norway, neighbour of Sweden.
Finally, you're doing peak ABBA again! Believe me, I'm an ABBA superfan -- I have a signed letter from Agnetha -- but the songs you've been doing the past few weeks, while awesome, should come after you've done the ABBA fundamentals. Btw: yes, this song only reached 45 on the US Billboard Hot 100. However, people always focus too much on ABBA's US chart listings: while Dancing Queen was their only US no.1, they had several Billboard top 10s (inc Waterloo, The Winner Takes It All, Take A Chance On Me), which made ABBA one of the best-known pop groups in America from 1974 onwards.
Also, they had 9 No.1 hits in the UK (including this one), which in the 70s and 80s was arguably an even more competitive market than the US charts in terms of stiff competition if not sheer size (with peak Queen, Led Zep, David Bowie, Elton John, Bee Gees, Rod Stewart, Pink Floyd and near-peak Rolling Stones; and Tom Jones, Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison still riding high as solo artists. ABBA had more No.1s than any of these in the 70s and 80s, and sold more than any of them period, including the latter 3 excepting as the Beatles. :D In other words, more recognition by the US at the time would have been nice, but they were already mixing it with some of the greatest artists of all time, during their most productive years, and frequently outselling them on their home turf. The US was just late to the ABBA party!
'Best-known'...not hardly! I grew up in the 70's in Philadelphia area and ABBA were rarely played on the radio. I heard 'Super Trouper once on the radio and that was a station from the Jersey Shore. I've listed my struggles being an ABBA fan on another channel (Bobby's Brother) so I won't get into it here. But I couldn't disagree with you more. This was my experience anyway.
@@BardOfAndromeda Totally agree. And their popularity across the globe has stood the test of time. With regard to the UK, I've mentioned it before but it's worth repeating - their collection album ABBA Gold has been in the top 100 album chart for one thousand and thirty six weeks and counting.
If I remember correctly the footage from the "circus" is from a real party they arranged for some reason (the occasion escapes me). You have to remember that music videos still rarely existed at this time, ABBA was pioneering that as well.
Oddly enough, this was the last song to be recorded for the album. In the UK I'm pretty sure the album had the biggest advance sales ever at the time, over 1 Million
The circus idea originally was thought up to take place in the Piccadilly Circus area, but the city would not permit it, so they had to film the video and photos in a studio instead. There are two competing circuses that showed up for the shoot. Side note: A "Super Trouper" is a stage spotlight, like that shown at the beginning of the video. Hence, "Super Trouper beams are going to blind me..." The circus footage was used for both Super Trouper and Happy New Year videos, as well as the cover pic for the album.
We have to be very, very happy about that ABBA did not got very famous in the USA; if they had done so, they too had been destroyed by the Big Maffia over there. So glad that they where held back in their own country, Sweden. In that way, they could keep their prestine og genuine and clean and down-to-earth attitude!
ABBA did have a run of US hits, but nothing like the popularity they achieved in so many other countries. It seemed that they were about to become enormous after 1977. Consistently either just outside the top ten, top tens, and a number one. Then 1979 came with the Voulez Vous album and ... ABBA went backwards. Never really gaining the momentum again. Maybe they needed to have put in more tour and promotional work after 1977. It seems that the tide went out for them sometime between 77 and 79.

fun fact: a super trouper is the name of the big stage light that is featured several times in this music video. the song is about being on stage and under the super trouper light.
This song is a good example of how difficult it is (and was) to have consistent international sales. The Super Trouper single was enormous in a lot of countries , and absolutely zero in others - even if sales of previous released tracks from the same album did well in that same country.
ABBA has sold the third or second most amount of music globally behind the Beatles and Elvis depending on which stats you use. And this is despite the states choosing not to spend money publishing them or focussing on them because the music execs didn't understand them as a group. OS despite not doing well in the states, they are huge in terms of all global rankings of music. But more than that, they are also a group of huge musical quality. not just popularity. I reccomend Fernando or Lay your love on me next :))
@@Chris-es7qp Actually USA had traditionally different music culture.Twas a rock music market, with also country, soul, and stuff.Pop music was rather "dissmisable" and considered not a "serious" genre. And F-ABBA being the epitome of "pap" was part of it so couldn't achieve being household names there.Besides each now n' then there was a "cold music war" between UK/European acts and American ihe charts.Rarely US hit singles entered UK charts and the opposite.Abba's American fans though are some of the most "fanatics" i believe. They really cherish them.
Well, your introduction and 'messed up' confession was funny and very topical. Abba Voyage contains a track called 'No Doubt About it' which begins: "I messed it up, alright And there's no doubt about it I had to pick this fight 'Cause I'd go mad without it" And what you said made me smile and think of that. Now then, Super Trouper. Nice review, and so pleased you liked it. It's a proper lovely song. Did you know that the song is named after the follow spotlight that features in the video? The lyrics, as usual in Abba songs, are darker than they appear. They're singing about the downside of fame: "Facing twenty thousand of your friends, how can anyone be so lonely? Part of a success that never ends." Abba never particularly enjoyed fame, I don't think and so the pressure to tour and perform was always something that they wanted to avoid. Oh I could go on but I won't. Brilliant song, super reaction and Marissa especially tonight, sounding more confident and finding your 'voice'. Lovely stuff people. THanks.
Even think US didn't respect enough them and therefore couldn't managed made breakthrough in US in their golden days 70-80's. They should touring active there, which they simple haven't time except one only1979 US tour. They working in studio making songs instead and also music videos.
You guys should watch some of Lasse Hallströms movies. He made all ABBA videos before there were videos... Super Trouper is what the strongest spot-light is called.
Dunno if anyone has mentioned that a Super Trouper is the name of a spotlight on stage. Hence everyone on set are performers including Abba under the spotlight.
There’s a making of the video documentary called ‘Somewhere in the crowd there’s you’. There’s no subtitles as such, but there are on screen captions in English so you get the gist of what’s going on.
Love your reactions. Could you react to Steps? If Abba had a bubblegum pop band baby, Steps would be it. They do a cover of a Benny and Bjorn song called Story of a heart ♥️ also, Something in your eyes and One for sorrow have Abba written all over it 👌
Super trouper an old fashioned spot light.. for pointing at singer on stage.. super trouper was number one on USA dance chart.. only just top 20 on billboard . 🌈💚
They booked a real Circus, and it did not show up for the shoot. So they called friends, family and what they could find of acrobats and other proformers
Brilliant reaction as always, both of you this one terrific too, but a small point: in the video it's not the same clip of the bloke with a spotlight, over & over again if you watch again you'll see the clips are slightly different (but similar) shots - not the same one *the idea for the video was a Fellini-esque group of theatrical performers surrounding them, to support the theme of a performer highlighted on stage by the "super trouper" spotlight adored by thousands, yet still feeling isolated & alone the super trouper spotlight symbolises the "aloneness" of the performer on stage, highlighted by a spot of light & completely isolated from others *the original plan was to film it on location at London's Piccadilly Circus but the logistics & restrictions & legalities etc made it impossible
They are dressed in white to pull them away from everyone else. The song says that being on the stage with that special person watching makes them the #1. So they were highlighting that.
Two people are doing the reaction Tyler, so perhaps both of you should be introduced at the beginning ? Not just yourself. Just an idea buddy. 🙂 Nice reaction. ✌️
The Competition For Number One Songs in The USA was Skewed. It Depended on What Was Near the Top of the Charts When it Came out. Hence when Super Trooper came out there Was Alot of Very Hot Competition that put Ranked this song. It was Great but release time was wrong to hit #1 Spot on USA
The U.S. can pigeon hole bands. Like ABBA was considered “Disco” because of the amazing success of “Dancing Queen”. Then they released “ABBA: the Album” with no disco songs. It was innovative Pop / Rock. When the single “Super Trouper” came out. The U.S. said we want ABBA as they were not as they would be. Then of course the U.S. could not ignore “The Winner Takes it All” and ABBA was back on top.
The whole "Super Trouper" album is just beautiful.

Tom McMurty i agree.2nd best selling band after Beatles.I recall well intented critics acknowleding ABBA as a "phenomenon" at the time.
Actually had this same thought the other night, how much bigger would they have been had they been more successful in the US... amazing, amazing band
Even though I'm gay i felt in love with Angneta in my youth,..... Greetings from Germany!
was Sweden's number one export...I still have most of their albums and a stereo to play them!
The girl’s vocals are the ultimate tool for a song writer to use and explore.
Just been to see Abba Voyage , in London, it was amazing........ I actually bought the Super Trouper album in 1980..... I'm so old hahaha
This song would have made a great ELO collaboration.
Well, your introduction and 'messed up' confession was funny and very topical. Abba Voyage contains a track called 'No Doubt About it' which begins:
"I messed it up, alright
And there's no doubt about it
I had to pick this fight
'Cause I'd go mad without it"
And what you said made me smile and think of that.
THanks.
Kids ( in England ) used to sing Super Trouper in my face as a way of taking the piss of me loving ABBA .
It is a real base and a synthesizer behind it ..
It is not a camara, it is a beam light.
This is music for the heart...that`s why you can get high...the mind can`t get to to this dimension...
Super Trouper was a #1 hit on the U.S. dance charts.
ABBA weren't soo popular in the USA in the 70s and 80s as a lack of touring the country if they did USA would've been crazy for them
One of my two favorite ABBA songs, alongside "S.O.S." (I can't pick a favorite between the two, so please don't ask). Glad you guys enjoyed it.
Thanks, Marissa! Thanks, Tyler! 👩🏼🎤 #TylerCreatesContent #TCCReacts #SuperTrouper #ABBA
Super trooper is the type of spotlight
I agree with comments about forget the real earlier songs and concentrate on the later songs first
hi guys
super trouper is the name of the light the stage guy is using
fyi
Fab reactions! Hope you react to Eagle next, then Soldiers, The Piper and I Let The Music Speak
Just FYI: This came up a couple of times, so I'm just going to point out that "Super Troupers" are those spotlights they keep including in the shots.
They have got to be the greatest band of all time...
Super Trouper always reminds me of Christmas
Dunno if anyone has mentioned that a Super Trouper is the name of a spotlight on stage. Hence everyone on set are performers including Abba under the spotlight.
There’s a making of the video documentary called ‘Somewhere in the crowd there’s you’. There’s no subtitles as such, but there are on screen captions in English so you get the gist of what’s going on.
Hi ABBA lovers(: i think its wierd that abba "THE KING HAS LOST HIS CROWN" not get response): i love that song (: (: (:
Love your reactions. Could you react to Steps? If Abba had a bubblegum pop band baby, Steps would be it. They do a cover of a Benny and Bjorn song called Story of a heart ♥️ also, Something in your eyes and One for sorrow have Abba written all over it 👌
Thanks for share👏🏽👏🏻👏🏼👏👏🏾👏🏿👏🏽👏🏻👏🏼
Super trouper an old fashioned spot light.. for pointing at singer on stage.. super trouper was number one on USA dance chart.. only just top 20 on billboard . 🌈💚
And I’m watching as I type the big light is called a super trouper!
They booked a real Circus, and it did not show up for the shoot. So they called friends, family and what they could find of acrobats and other proformers
Super trouper was a big night club hit rather than billboard funnily enough ? ..🌈💚🥳🎈
The Super Trouper is the spotlight.
Maybe take a listen to My Momma Said. I think you'll enjoy the lyrics and it's got a great bass line and guitar solo.
My Mama Said
Great song!
Brilliant reaction as always, both of you
this one terrific too, but a small point:
in the video it's not the same clip of the bloke with a spotlight, over & over again
if you watch again you'll see the clips are slightly different (but similar) shots - not the same one
*the idea for the video was a Fellini-esque group of theatrical performers surrounding them,
to support the theme of a performer highlighted on stage by the "super trouper" spotlight
adored by thousands, yet still feeling isolated & alone
the super trouper spotlight symbolises the "aloneness" of the performer on stage, highlighted by a spot of light & completely isolated from others
*the original plan was to film it on location at London's Piccadilly Circus
but the logistics & restrictions & legalities etc made it impossible
They are dressed in white to pull them away from everyone else. The song says that being on the stage with that special person watching makes them the #1. So they were highlighting that.
you made my day.
Video for super trouper was planned to be shot in Piccadilly Circus London, but the authorities said no.
Benny wrote this song in 10 minutes while drinking tea at half time concert in Glasgow and he added the city into the lyrics while doing this .
Wells, that's some talented songwriting right there....
Cant think of one bad ABBA song ? ! X
You havet to listen to ABBA at Wembley 1979 , Dose your Another knep and Hole in your soul. 😊😆
Hi Marissa! Did you cut your hair? Nice.
Super Trouper= Spotlight
Two people are doing the reaction Tyler, so perhaps both of you should be introduced at the beginning ? Not just yourself.
Just an idea buddy. 🙂
Nice reaction. ✌️
I think Marissa is just humble and does not seek the SPOTLIGHT. She doesn’t need to. The SPOTLIGHT will always find her. ❤️
Pls react to ABBA's Lay All Your Love On Me.......one of my fav ABBA song
5:30 "women" lmaoo this is so funny
The Competition For Number One Songs in The USA was Skewed. It Depended on What Was Near the Top of the Charts When it Came out. Hence when Super Trooper came out there Was Alot of Very Hot Competition that put Ranked this song. It was Great but release time was wrong to hit #1 Spot on USA
Have u guys done Fernando yet? Otherwise u really should :)
The U.S. can pigeon hole bands.
The super trouper is a large-ish stage light
They could listen to "Respect" by Bjorn Again and review that!
Nice OUTRO music. Better than the elevator music! 😉
What your t’aboutît abba song ?
