very informative, but it was recently found sharpies have a high enough alcohol content that they by health code are safe to reuse and are verifiably still sterile. this was a common agreement just recently tho so i really like that you touched on that.
I'm not so sure on the sharpies being on the throw away list I mean that is going further than we did in the medical industry when I was training for premed. As long as you do it ALL after the clients skin has been cleaned, alcohol wiped and ready to lay on a stencil the same way we did for markings prior to surgeries it is fine and I really wouldn't support that amount of waste. If you feel so strongly on this there are some really good calligraphy pens/brushes that can be run through an autoclave/properly sterilised and you can work with a dip style ink. The "copying" arguement is one I have dealt with in other stuff and tend to see it as give proper credit and go from there and change and tweak and cite your inspirations. The ownership debate (who owns the artwork) is complicated and I always pay based on taking ownership of any art I commission so I can do with it as I see fit afterwards. (Logo's, tee's, posters, book covers etc) I get really frustrated with the entitled new generation of artists doing commission work who don't grasp that the copyright is something I want as well as the piece itself. ESPECIALLY when it is a character I own. (Book/novella covers, video intro work etc) Yeah I accept I have to pay more to take ownership of the artwork and ALWAYS allow the artist to use it for portfolio work but I don't have stuff that isn't under my direct control. Iv been ripped off a couple of times and have seen it too many times to others, having a custom one off piece done and then a few months later it ends up on a shirt or calendar or print series. Contracts are a key need when getting custom work done. As for the don't do drugs with your client... does that count if you have known the tattooist for YEARS before hand and the discussion about the design happened at his place playing D&D....
I am a commission artist (hopefully also a tattoo artist one day), and my preferred art style is pretty tattoo-esk you could say, lots of line art/dot shading. I have had multiple ppl come to me to commission me for a design of my artwork for specifically a tattoo design. I always set up a contract especially for those types of commissions. If i ever see an artist, or a tattoo artist claiming my design as their own, just know most people have stuff like that set in place for protection. So yeah, don't steal other peoples artwork or you will get in trouble. Especially if the Original artist is pretty reputable! It will get around lol.
Ohh snap! Fellow PA tattooerist here.. It's SOOOO true the nasty s#!t I've seen some people do! Grabbing from the stack of paper towels is just gross. I've seen guys claiming to be "the best in the northeast", "ink masters" who tried so hard to make that show, got denied every time, haha... doing some pretty nasty COMMON SENSE contamination.. using unwrapped machines, around the time pens were just starting to make their way around.. remember the stylus? Yeah, watching an owner use one unwrapped, unbagged cord, dial soap in the wash bottle, rinsing the grip and wiping with paper towel between clients using t tech rubber band carts.. some horror stories I tell ya.. not naming any names though I should.. I'm glad to see someone calling this crap out.. I am guilty of having to adjust may chair here and there, and wrap the handle, but the foot idea is genius! He'll I switched to headlamps but had my lamp all wrapped up when I was using it, you can't be touching stuff while you're working with dirty gloves!! I've seen people touching their freaking PHONES!! I always end the day with a bunch of messages and question marks, clients expecting an answer NOW, I tell them ALWAYS. I do not touch my phone while I'm working, it's disgusting. So you won't hear from me until my gloves are off.. one of these days it'd be nice to get some work done from you sir, maybe even trade off or something, but I will admit, I suck..
Completely agree... however.. only time I do find a lil push helpful is if you running an 11+ RS as a liner.. increase voltage, yes, slow down hand speed, yes... but still needs a lil more push than a liner.. mandala type work is 👌 with a round shader
If you are using a marker wouldn’t the skin already be clean and sterilized? I understand if you’ve already broken the skin but as long as no tattooing has happened yet why would it be gross? Also great video!👍🏼
Tiger Goodface there’s no such thing as sterilizing skin. After you clean and then shave the area being tattooed, the shaving actually opens pores in the skin and can also remove skin tissue even though it’s a small amount, you’re still contaminating your markers. Markers are cheap so why risk it. Hope that helps
i started tattooing when i was younger, but had to stop, due to family issues and i didnt know ow to handle myself , going to clients, and got into serious trouble, i had someone teacing me tree times a week from his home, and got to the point i was using the guns, but as i said, havent dont this is years, so i am some what educated, then someone owed me big money and gave me a case of tattoo guns, and such, so the thought i starting tis us again has been on my mind, ad alot has changed since 20 years. so i wanted to tell you how much i appricate your videos and your time to do this, casue with tattoos its all you have time for, lol and I love family people, suc as you, and dogs, soi will be watching, thanks
Things I was taught as an apprentice in 92..... CRINGE 😱 Times and tattooing has changed sooooo much over the years. Common sense is what most of it comes down to. Great videos, thanks.
been watching your videos because im thinking of getting into the industry and something I've been wanting since I was in high school but never pulled the trigger on it. great info man !
Can you use normal sharpies that you buy in the dollar store to tattoo somebody? What I wanna say is that if I pre-draw on somebody's skin to follow the sketch with my tattoo machine, is it not a bad thing that the sharpies ink will also get tattooed into the persons skin? especially if its a cheap one?
the tv made me very distracted.. Hopefully there is no tv in background on this next one...lol JK your presentations are packed with so much digestible info. It is you and people just like you who make RUclips such a great entity. Thank you for your service. Love from New Zealand
Random question does the sharpie point go for stencil markers? I bought a set havent used or tried them yet but there might not be any use if there already contaminated after the first use
I feel like the whole marker thing is a little extreme…. I get it if you used one to mark a person mid tattoo, like to touch up stencil that got lost, but you clean their skin with green soap, shave them, and then clean them again, and then mark on them, without never exposing the marker to open skin or blood, i dont see an issue…. With using it on thd mext person…. Can someone give me a real and valid point on why doing so is potentially life threatening or a risk for transmission of disease or infection? If so then i will stop using that practice immediately… but I know so many artists who use the same markers on multiple people…
I was referring to the adjustable grip section of the machine itself. I bag my pen pretty much exactly the same as you but I just use bandage tape. I meant after it’s taken out of the bag. I’ve been using cavicide. Not sure if it’s totally necessary to autoclave the pen itself. I don’t but have seen some people do it that way.
Omg your kid is so cute 🥰 made Awwn when showed up. Also, thank you for these advices I will mostly take these into consideration when I start tattooing
I have a question about the sharpie thing... I always use sharpies AFTER cleaning and disinfecting the area with alcohol and obviously BEFORE starting the tattoo, If I need to draw or fix anything after I started tattooing I got single use pens, Does it still apply?
I only ever use markers on 1 client no matter the point during the tattooing process I’m at. Single use for everything. Regular sharpies are expensive, but if you get the non name brand they are cheap for a large pack.
Im 16 and i started to tattoo at 14-15 with a 30 dollar amazon machine and i really whant to be tattooer by the futur so how can i become a tattoo artist.. please help

You need to learn how to put needle/ink on skin. Maybe your line back 2 or 3x , or your machine is fast/higher voltage and your hands is slow. You need to learn your voltage.
where do you recommend buying tattoo supplies from? i don't have a big local supplier so the inventory isn't great mahalos for all the informative video
Didn't even think about the sharpies! Thanks to Covid, I've got a UV-C Sanitizing Light to disinfect various everyday objects, and I've been curious as to how safe/effective it would be to disinfect machines and equipment. I did my research, and I'm fairly confident that the light I got is legitimate (whereas a lot are not), but I'm still not planning on using it as my only means of sanitizing, but it still feels kinda fun and futuristic to just beam the machine with a magical laser light to clean it.

Alcohol doesn’t kill all bloodborne pathogens tho.. You use them after you’ve shaved a client, the skin has potential to be broken which then give the potential to pass something along to another client.
The throw of the needle doesn't dictate how you line in the slightest many artists ride the tip and have no issue some have that son bitch sticking out like a sword and line perfect. running your machine faster isn't the greatest of advices as you're going to cause more trauma to the skin stroke length as well as hand speed being a major factor are what helps when lining I can line at 5v and line at 13v it's all about adapting that hand speed

How are you cleaning your pen machine grip? I’ve seen a lot of different ways and it doesn’t seem like there’s a collective “right way” to do it.
I’ve been using disposables. You could autoclave it tho. There are also cold sterilization methods people use also.
