  • This isn't so much a "Christmas song" as it is a story that happens to take place on Christmas.
I had a cassette tape of "The Deepwater Family" when I was a kid. They were a family band that sang old sea shanties. I still probably know all the songs from that tape. This song was on it and I am always drawn to stories, so I liked it a lot.
Several years later I heard Paul Brady's virtuosic version of this song (which is almost certainly where the Deepwater Family learned it). Paul Brady's "Arthur McBride" is one of the best musical things ever to exist. I listen to it all the time. If my performance is even a small fraction as good as his version I will be happy.
I love this story, I love this melody, it's fun to sing and play, and it mentions Christmas. What more can you ask for from a song? Ha!
