Another one, when paying by card, and the terminal asks you whether you want to pay in EUR or GBP, opt to pay in the local currency, Euro's, as you get the VISA exchange rate. If you opt to pay in GBP, you'll get the card terminal merchant's exchange rate, which is always worse than the VISA exchange rate, as that's how they score a quick buck. On a large hotel payment, it could save you or cost you quite a lot of beer money if you are not careful.
This was the question I was going to ask. Do I select GBP or Euro. Thanks. We went to a few shops for things. My friend was told to select GBP. Lesson learnt 🙂.
Thanks for that information Lucy. Was tempted to draw some cash out of ATM but changed my mind and went to our bank instead so glad I did after seeing your video. Take care Robert.
Hi Lucy, another very helpful video. Having been ripped off in the past in various country's, here is what I do. I show them, say £100, and ask, " How much will you give me for this amount ". The reputable ones, will show me the amount, or print it off on a small slip of paper. ONLY THEN, do I hand over my cash. I usually walk from my Hotel to the indoor market, change my cash, safely, and enjoy a nice cup of coffee. Job done 👍
Sound advice as always, nothing worse than being ripped off while on holiday that you've worked hard to pay for. Generally speaking if you're sensible what's the level of crime like? phone/bag snatching, pick pockets etc. I suspect no worse than anywhere else, always nice to be made aware of the local scams, much appreciated 🙂 First class channel!
Yes it happens, as a tourist hotspot there are some scumbags ready to pray on people, we'll be doing another video soon on what to look out for regarding pickpockets etc
Another great & helpful video. We always get our euros from Sheila's in indoor market. On our first visit to benidorm 25 years ago we stopped at the dynastic hotel. Also stopping there, was Sheila's mam who told us about her daughter's exchange. This was the only exchange business in market at this time. Have used them ever since, hundreds of times with no complaints. Back at dynastic later in year, can't wait !! Will pop into winners bas well to say hello. Keep up great work Lucy. Kind regards, john
As a tourist, I always make sure I take enough Euro cash , too much is better than too little...i shop around the u.k. exchanges and take It there. I'd never use airport exchanges. Love your videos Lucy, keep up the good work. Xx
As always Lucy great video. One of the best ATMs to use is Sabadell. Branch by indoor market and 2 in Old Town. They offer you the going rate and their charge is 1.80€ per transaction.
@Tony Adams As a follow on from earlier post it is worth checking what your home bank charges for foreign exchange, whether cash or paying for goods in local currency, as they all differ. Some people I know have had a nasty surprise "extra" charge in their bank statements.
Always decline or press No to the offered conversion and always opt to pay in the local currency. Before proceeding check the charge fee. And don’t assume banks are free. The highest charge fee I found in Benidorm was at the Santander bank.
I’m surprised at XE as they are a very reputable money transfer company. Great video Lucy. Pretty sure it’s useful info for the newbie’s and a reminder for the oldies too.
really informative for those not in the know... any cashpoint with "euro net" on it is a rip off and will give a rubbish rate and then charge you again for using it and they are everywhere. as you said the main bank machines are best and i have found if one wants to charge you find another bank as they dont all charge...
Hello Lucy - I was scammed once. Back in 2009 I had to use 2 Atm's. my son in law used one of the Atm's I used but he was only visiting for 1 week. I was there for 3 months. My bank wrote me and wanted to know was I in some foreign city as there was an attempt to spend 620 euro on my Debit card. I live in Liverpool. I answered NO! so they erased my card and sent me another one. I immediately contacted my Son in Law and asked him about the attempted scam and he said no!. And now the BAD NEWS. The ATM where my card was ILLEGALLY READ WAS IN AN ENCLOSED AREA in the BBVA bank at the Rincon end of the MEDITERRANIO . The other ATM we both used is the battered looking one by McDonalds also at the Rincon end. It cost me NOTHING.
Thanks for advice I always change my money at home before I come out now got scammed 4 years ago never again nice one for doing great videos see you in September
Euronet will give you exchange rate decline and opt for bank exchange rate don't let it fool you I always try and use the Spanish Bank ATM even if I have to walk to the old town but the best way is to use your credit card and pay in total at end of the month I travel Europe for years as a truck driver and the credit card is the better option
Excellent information Lucy. I've always used Tony's at the indoor market never ever got ripped off. And like you said never used an atm. Crack on my lovely. X
Yes pay in local currency with card so always choose euros. Also it's often easier to just use your card in the shops, restaurants and bars nowadays and let your bank do the conversion
Best deal for Euros in Spain is a Santander UK Everyday Current Account - use the debit card to withdraw currency only at local Santander ATMs - and always choose the No Conversion option (rather than pay in GBP) - no fees involved.
Yes that’s what I’m been told as I already bank with Santander. But when I was in Benidorm in April, I couldn’t find a Santander bank or ATM! 🤷♀️I’d love to know for next time 😊
Love the videos Lucy it’s been very helpful to know everything as it’s been years since I’ve been and you’ve helped me decide where to stay as I’m coming out in august for a week , I think I’m pretty close to winners also , I’m at sandos Monaco !! Definitely pop in winners for a beer 🍺 hope I bump into you 👍🏼
Nice vid Lucy. However, I think it would be great to name and shame the bad foreign exchange places and ATMS for balance as you did mention which were the good ones. Keep up the good work you do for everyone! :)
If you have a Monzo card, you can withdraw cash without any fees from Banca March ATMs but I'm not sure if there are any branches in Benidorm. Of the other banks when using Monzo; Bankia and BBVA have the lowest fees. Avoid Santander ATMs if you have Monzo as the fees are huge.
The outside of the Nereo is a great place to watch the potato men at work, we went so many times to benidorm we could recognise the lookouts and the stooges!
We go to the indoor Market Tony or shelly you on need to take you passport once to Tony give you a wee card so when you need to change more money you don't have to take you passport you get what it say no charge great place to go
Hey lucy there are some connected to hotels like for example the one thats right outside the Flamingo Beach Resort, Im guessing we should avoid them aswell?
Hi thank you lucy for showing us were to go to change money.Well i will make sure i bring anoth euros out with me next year or i will go to the indoor market thank you lucy for saying about agms that s was a good blog keep smiling and keep safe
Prepare before you go and use global interchangeable cards. There are a few out there, some a bit better than others but if you’re WISE you might pick the right one for you 😉
Hi can anyone recommend a reliable/reasonably priced Taxi from Alicante to Benidorm please for 4 people and luggage, hope it’s ok to ask on here, many thanks Paul
Hello cracking channel i have just subscribed. I have a question. Can you tell me if the Alsa bus from Alicante Airport to Benidorm stops on Europa ave beside Calle Ibiza, total random question i know...cheers.
Hi Lucy Tam from Bathgate here we try and take enough euros with us but always use indoor Market if we need to you never mentioned the you know what men but maybe a no no for you I understand x
Hola. See you Lucy on Monday at the Dove Park. Put my phone away and so were you. Next time I'll get you. A couple of times when paying at a restaurant by card. The server has presented the reader without showing you the bill which they have in the hand. When you do see the bill it is for a higher amount/another table. A mistake? the reaction of the server says NO, and a couple of establishments making the same mistake. Questionable! You decide. I would like to know the law for smoking in an outdoor part of the restaurant. Before Covid one could smoke, now it seems to be at the discretion. Keep up the good work
I guess the spanish banks are the best if you have a credit card. Banco Santander or BBVA are the two most important here in Spain and i am sure they will accept credit cards.
Why oh why would anyone go to Benidorm, if you want to see Spain in reality go to Valencia. Benidorm seems to just be Blackpool with a lot of men trying to be women in pub acts. FFS go to somewhere like Valencia and see the real Spain with Spanish people and Spanish food.
