  • Space Scientist, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock talks about being Made by Dyslexia.
    About Made By Dyslexia:
We’re a global charity led by successful dyslexics. Our purpose is to help the world properly understand, value and support dyslexia. We believe in the game-changing power of dyslexic thinking. After all, everything from the light bulb to the iPhone was invented by dyslexic thinkers. In 2020 we launched “Connect The Spots”, a global training and advocacy programme to level the playing-field so every dyslexic child can achieve their potential.
To achieve this we have one single minded mission: to train every teacher worldwide in the next five years to spot, support and empower every dyslexic child.

Maggie thank you so much for this. I am myself dyslexic and you are right. Being dyslexic can also come with great imagination and a different perspective. After struggling with my own education, and using technology to help with my writing, it can now be an advantage.

I dont understand dyslexia. I'm not being funny, but can it be peculiar to a particular language? As in; is it possible to struggle and be dyslexic where english is concerned, but still excel in French or Spanish etc? I ask, because she gained a degree in Physics. I can't do physics. Not because it's beyond me, but because I can't make instant sense of the equations, they just look like chaos on the page. Rather like music notation:- I'm a musician but can't read music. So, she must be able to understand all the squiggles that make up the complex equations and formulas in physics. Where I can't. But I CAN read and write English very well. Do you understand what I'm getting at here?

@@irogueosaretin809 Most songwriters that i know personally, cannot read music. Its quite common to play by ear and to invent. Paul McCartney is a very famous example too.

true too true education should teach people how to think stem is one of the ways forward the biggest hurdle is to allow students and people alike to explore maths and not be afraid of the subject in Jamaica they use what is called dominos it comes from Africa along with ife divination of which is from west Africa where I am coming from is by doing board games its allow people to interreact more with subjects like maths and science that's why African people do well on science subjects and law perhaps dominos should be interduce in main stream schools and colleges lastly just as a reminder that Olympia Lapointe is a Mathematician and scientist just Maggie she wrote a book called amathophobia its truly an inspiration .
