      I used to live near his shop in Santa Monica Ca. He is the nicest of men and the most knowledgeable on stringed instruments. All the greats used to come to our neighborhood to have their instruments done. Whether they lived in LA or London they came to Mr. Carruthers to have their instruments worked on and I amean all! From the Stones, Zeppelin to all the Kings in blues etc.

    I do not recommend anyone but an experienced tech use steel wool to clean their fingerboard. Steel wool dust is pervasive and will cling to the pickup magnets which can cause distortion when playing. We tape up the pickups with masking tape and use both a shop vac and an air compressor to remove any steel wool dust on the instrument, the pickups and the workbench.

    Great video, John. I use the same method and #0000 steel wool on my electric 6 and 7-string guitar fretboards, right before a lemon oil treatment for ebony 'boards. The only thing I could suggest for my purpose is a bit of masking tape on the neck pickup to prevent bits of steel wool from magnetically sticking. I'll be sure to check out your other vids!

    I am not a luthier, but my experience is this: If you store a neck for any length of time you should slacken the truss rod, since, without the counter-force of the strings, it can eventually warp the neck. While you'll see the neck move when you take all the strings off (one at a time and no wire-cutters, please!), I really doubt that it could warp in the amount of time it takes to change strings or clean your bass. I think it would take a lot more time and/or force.

    its a myth that you need to oil the fretboard. rosewood is naturally pretty oily, and maple isn't that permeable, so oiling is unnecessary.

      I have a Dean Edge 2 and the fretboard is Walnut. It is almost a necessity to clean that material with some kind of wool and oil to get it smooth. The main neck body is basswood and I don't know how to clean that
      \

    • @joerobot32
      @joerobot32 4 года назад

      Your concerned with cleaning it, so using some type of agent to clean it can be necessary. But there are alot of folks who are under the impression that a rosewood board will dry out and need to be re-oiled. It doesn't. Oiling a rosewood board may darken it some, but isn't necessary.

    isnt it bad to take all the strings off like that because doesnt it lose pressure and the neck begins to bend more and when you restring, the strings will be a little bit more farther from the neck? anyone know, cause i need to clean my bass bad and im afraid that it'll get warped and i dont want to go through the hassle with the truss

    1. Never use steel wool on a guitar neck. 2. Use a soft surgeons scrub brush and a small amount of Simple Green. 3. Wipe clean. 4. Repeat if necessary. 5. On rosewood, use a small amount of raw linseed oil to polish the wood. As a side note, should you decide to use steel wool, all the micro bits of the steel wool will find their way into your pickups (magnets) eventually. On the body, just use a dry clean cotton cloth. On a very dirty spot use a bit of saliva. Yes saliva. Never use furniture polish. Any harsh chemicals can get into the minute cracking, should you be cleaning a vintage body for example, and begin to ruin your investment. I have to wonder why he worked at so many guitar companies.

      The Laidback Biker won't the linseed oil loosen the glue under the frets?

    • @TheLaidbackBiker
      @TheLaidbackBiker 7 лет назад

      No it wont. Just use a drop or two between each fret and work it well into the rosewood. Don't pour it on. Wipe it in and rub it off. This tip came from Ronnie Woods tech.

      I've never had an issue with it. Obviously don't let it sit forever. One string at a time is the best practice obviously, I've had the thing buzz really bad as it acclimated to the new tension doing all at once before but letting it sit did the trick.

  • @silverdroid

    Is this video some sick joke? I've seen people take steel wool to just the frets with a fret protector and even that seems to be questionable by some.
    Is this being done because he believes he can go light enough to just affect the gunk and not sand down the rosewood? And in terms of lemon oil, isn't that used more to clean off the gunk rather than serve as a moisturizer?
    Rosewood cleaning is now a free-for-all, there's no consistency in any of these techniques. I've seen it all now, soap and water, lemon oil, and now steel wool to the actual rosewood...!

    don't use steel wool...scratched the shit out of my maple the one and only second of my life that i ever tried it and now regret. also, don't leave 4 inches of excess string, like 3 inches is a lot. and the truss rod adjustment he does is specific to his instrument, different basses have different methods, like my rickenbacker 4001 needs to be clamped to a table while i take pressure off of the truss rods to adjust them by putting pressure on the neck of my bass with my hand. also, he uses furniture polish?! since when does someone consider their beautiful 1960's vintage fireglo bass, or whatever someone may own, a piece of furniture, lol. there are much better cleaning products for instruments on the market. do a bit of research on your instrument to see whats actually recommend because this video is not good in my opinion.

      lemon oil dries out rosewood because of the open grain structure. Linseed oil is going to work on every wood and is significantly cheaper to boot.

    • @justinandsheba
      @justinandsheba 2 года назад

      You have it backward. You 100% want to use boiled linseed oil... rub it on and wipe it right off, no "soaking in." If you're using actual lemon oil (most products labeled 'lemon oil' are actually lemon scented mineral oil) you are at risk of drying the wood out.
