  • In this video I show the French Army canteen cup stove and the new French army pouch I had to get to carry my updated set.
    The answer to will this stove fit a US GI canteen cup is yes! But it may not work with all pouches.

    If your brewing tea use the tea bag afterwards to remove the residue, it cleans it off pretty good.

    Just for info, regarding French canteen cover : P = you can take it to the cleaners. The little square with the circle = it can go into the washing machine, not more thant 40 degrees . You can iron it but no drying machine.

    The whole French Army canteen and cookset is marvellous.
    I've had two mess kits for a while and one alu bottle and cover. but only yesterday bought an entire bottle, cup, burner plus cover from my local surplus here in Brittany...as cheap as chips ! 😁

    These were on UK Ebay a short while ago but listed as Belgian and being sold with the Belgian canteen cup. I have two Belgian canteen cups and they're not so great, very thick aluminium, hold a small volume, heavy for what they are and no canteens nest in them, not even the smaller Dutch ones so I didn't want another one of them taking up space. Shame, the stove stands an interesting design and the French kit is very usable. Thanks for the vid!

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  6 лет назад

      The Belgian cup I have is smaller than the French one but they look like the same design and maybe the same company made both. I wonder if the Belgian stove version is also smaller to fit their cup?

    • @jelkel25
      @jelkel25 6 лет назад

      In the UK sellers mix up French, Belgian and Dutch items so I don't know if there really is a Belgian version of this stove. As far as I know Belgian kit is marked A.B.L. with a date but French kit is marked with the makers name and sometimes a date (like your stove).

    • @siatbury58

      For what it is worth Tournus is in Burgundy in eastern France, so the stove is definitely French, even if UK surplus stores marry them up with Belgian canteen cups. Someone told me later French canteen cups were smaller in capacity (around 600cl and possibly identical to Belgian ones...) Complicated isn't it?

    Rub a bar of Soap on the bottom of your Canteen Cup BEFORE you put it over the Esbit fuel . The soot & tar from combustion of the Esbit tablet adheres to the Soap which easily washes off .

    I bought the stove half a year ago from Ebay. To my surprise, I bought one and the seller sent me ten pieces. I gave some to few of my friends.
    I find it can fit most of my canteen system on hand. I have a reproduction of French canteen system bought locally,which use Rothco canteen cup . The stove fit and the cover's snap can close with a little bit of force. My Keith Ti canteen system(may be same as HC canteen system) is also fit. However, Pathfinder canteen system do not fit for the base of the cup is larger than the stove.

    John: I've seen these type of stoves before, through when I tried to find one (a real French one), they didn't seem to be available anymore. So, good score and a great review! I settled for a stainless steel copy I found on eBay that's made in China (isn't everything anymore?). The quality is alright, I guess. The arms for the pot legs poked out of the sides of the base 1/8 when folded. Ground those down, as I didn't want them poking holes in my canteen cover. They are nice but VERY susceptible to wind. On a calm day, they heat / boil about as fast as an Esbit Pocket Stove (mine's so old, it says "Made in W. Germany"). But I mean REAL calm. It can hold four Esbit fuel tabs in between the folded lags and the base. Overall, I'm still going with my Esbit. Had it for 30 years, stores five fuel tabs inside, darn near bombproof, and less susceptible to wind.Again, excellent review, as always. God's Peace, my friend.

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  6 лет назад +1

      Many people have told me about the Chinese knock off. I am with you on the Esbit stove. I have a couple and that is what I prefer when burning fuels tablets. If its windy out, I bring along my folding windshield to help. I will probably not use this French stove very many times. I have it mostly for my collection. I was very lucky to have one sent to me. Thanks for watching another video and for your comment!

Also good for manouevring my simmer ring on or off the burner. I don't have a Trangia cookset though, just the burner and pot grip bought separately

    Try a mesh nylon filter. The REI with the plastic legs works great and is fast. But it takes two Tsps. of coffee to make one cup. The coffee is ready as soon as the coffee filters through. However, if you cut the legs off, use one Tbs. and then submerge the filter into the hot water (or place the filter with coffee into the cup, then pour the 194F water over the coffee) you save some coffee. But you need to wait 3-5 minutes for the coffee to brew.
    GSI sells a nylon filter w/o legs.

    i saw that stove on ebay before. i wish it did fit the trangia. shame it doesn't. that collapsible orange pour thru coffee basket i may have to buy one. collapsing does look better than the way i do it with a hard plastic 4 cup coffee maker basket (packs better / smaller). that's right no clean-up with the filter / easier / less water / better coffee. same coffee quality as at home and i do care about that. instant ain't coffee to me - never will be either. sorry don't wanna beat a dead horse. good outing john - thumbed it up & enjoyed it!

      Thanks for watching another one! The coffee drip is very nice to have. Just make sure if you buy one that it has two drain holes in the bottom and not four. I hear that the one with four holes drains too fast and makes weaker coffee. Mine is made by UST which may have a parent company with another name. I bought it on ebay. Have a great day!

      TheReal111t: i like the crusader and the MK2 also. i like the bigger 1L pot of the MK2. i watched your video thanks - thumbed it up! a couple of years ago i almost bought the Crusader. i like the rope and alcohol. i don't like Esbit tablets. most of the time i build a wood fire, but sometimes use alcohol. i have 5 USGI canteen cook kits. some with canteen shop HD stoves (i don't like them that much for alcohol). some with pathfinder lids and i have 1 with a HeavyCover lid. 2 of them have the original open-top / open-bottom usgi stoves. i have some of the usgi aluminum esbit type stoves, too.
      i modified one of the usgi aluminum esbit type stoves inorder to do this... leave in truck as bugout to use small skillet on and to use canteen cup on. i have never seen anybody else ever do what i did and my work looks like it came from the factory that way. the trangia is used in it and the trangia is 100% fully adjustable inside of it effortlessly and conveniently. i wanted it to nest small and be able to support a small skillet. on trail i want to do skillet cooking on trail - not just boil water and it does that perfectly.
      i don't know how to do video or pictures of it. so, i can't show you what i did in the modification. i wish i could, but i can't. in the US. the USGI kits are so inexpensive. on ebay i noticed the crusader kit was quite expensive. my modification adds no extra parts / no moving or adjustable parts / nothing to lose / nothing to assemble. it costs no money to do it either and with my modification the entire nested unit packs down much smaller than the crusader because it is the exact same over-all nested size of the original USGI canteen kit. i pack-out a small 8" skillet and a small cookie spatula. i want bacon and eggs in a skillet on the trail and boiling too with alcohol as the fuel. my mod works perfectly and i have never seen any videos of anybody ever doing anything similar.
      sorry to talk so long.

      Larry Kramer the French mess tins are very well thought out, three parts rather than the British two part, you get two mess tins large and small and a shallow one which you can use to eat off or to fry stuff on. Good stuff

I've the French canteen and haven't been too impressed with it as it leaks (hopefully fixed now) the pouchs are pretty great I've used a set of green 4 stud ones for at least 2years now with the Dutch canteen and cup and found the extra space in them is so useful, all the bestl

    • @tomw9659

      Stinky Finn I found (in my own experience with the stove) that it will fit on the bottom on the Belgian set with the mug handles tucked inside it however it only fits on one way. I also found that it does just about fit in the standard jigsaw camo pouch but it doesn’t come out as easily as you would expect. As well as this, it makes the plastic parts on the end of the straps holding the flap part on the canteen shut rest at an awkward angle. So inshore yes but not very well
