This is slowly becoming one of the best intra-city team rivalries in US professional sports.
Hard to answer for everyone, but I never felt attracted to Galaxy. Yes the stadium is far but beyond that they always took the city for granted I'd say. Also people found a chance to be part of something from the beginning and build the short history of the team. I've heard friends that after going to a LAFC game in person they fall in love with the team.

Put a stadium near a train station a freeway and in a soccer frenzy neighborhood that is within walking distance from the stadium 2, Have the supporters be involved, by listening to them and what they would like to have as a club,. Colors, stands, crest etc! 3. Have a talented player like Carlos Vela and build around 4. Have well known owners that will market the club a high levels What attracted many like myself is that I grew up in south LA and to have a professional team in south LA was a dream come true. Not to bash the other team, but LAFC planned it right.
the MLS isn't considered a major sports league even now, imagine decades ago. galaxy's achievements are easy to overlook because they occurred at a time where the league as a whole was easy to overlook as well. now that the league has more eyes on it, more credit is given. to answer your question: galaxy's location and recent mediocrity are its two biggest obstacles, LAFC has an edge in both location and quality.
