Used to run around there with my first girlfriend when we, and the castle, were young. It was just open; come on in. Everyone knew the Rubels & the Realty office and that they were a little eccentric, which was cool because every town needs its characters. Haven't been back or thought of the place in more than 50 years; this has triggered a lot of stuff. You made an old man cry a little, for as everyone knows, you can't go home again. Thanks from GHS class of '71
Hi, I'm Glen's sister. Yup, it was a good, safe place to be as a young adult. Don't tear up be thankfully you got to be there. To know Micheal is to have a warm, cozy memory.
Wow! What an amazing find. Imagine building a castle, and with plans that only exist in your mind. Another example of turning “junk” into treasure. So glad you took us to this extraordinary place.
Such an inspiration. I lost a good friend last year that was a very creative builder. He had an accident working on his retirement home and was gone from all of our lives. His beautiful homes are an enduring legacy to his memory just like this castle is to its builders. Thank You for another great chapter in your collection of travels.
looking from above it´s really more Disney Land than "real" Castle 😅 I think it´s still cool living there. Recycling is always a good thing too! Im really happy to see that.
All I can think of is 'Really Cool'!! That is an amazing place for so many reasons. It is very nicely done and repurposed so much material that would have been in landfills. It is amazing that he was able to build and finish it. It would be an absolute nightmare to try to construct today... In most cities there is so much stupidity regarding ANY construction. I have a friend who lives in a little city and had to get licenses, permits and 'make public notice' for him to remove an 18 inch tall border along his carport! I choose to live in the country. I have a few acres of land (not at my house) with a pond, shelter and an old school bus(that was converted into an insulated camper). I had a little hassle to get electricity there but that was worth it. I let the Boy Scouts camp there. They have kids from the city that have hardly ever been in real woods, and they bring them out there to camp. They pitch tents, build fires and go fishing; things these City kids have never done before (and if any of the kids get scared from the sounds of wild animals at night, they can take their sleeping bags and stay in the bus). It's a great way for them to participate and not get embarrassed if they get scared. It is amazing to see that someone in the city got to build this dream of theirs. Great Video! Ya'll Take Care and be safe, John
That was an absolutely amazing place. Wonderful production and presentation, I'm shocked one of the cable channels hasn't snapped you guys up for a unique travel show. Thank you for sharing this adventure.
Wowza. Learn something new every day. Did not know this existed. Incredible and you got to net the builder...sort of. That’s unique in your adventures. Thank you very much.
Your videos are so inspiring and unusual. I just didn’t realise how many people in the US are eccentric’ and so creative. Sometimes the mainstream media paints your country as bland and only interested in making money. But thats clearly untrue! Wonderful! Keep it up you creatives and you Odyssey Oddities! ❤
That castle is so amazing, and you guys are awesome for showing us these cool places. If my wife and I ever get to visit California you guys have already mapped out awesome destinations for us to visit thank you. ❤️😊
Another great video, like I was there! So sad to see the model trains like that, wish there was a model railway club that could help getting it going. I guess Michael was counting on the Santa Fe/Southern Pacific merger with those bottles
Greetings Bethany, Drew, Scott Rubel, and wonderful fans! Love seeing this castle, seeing the room with all the trains, the clock and hearing the bells! I live near the Winchester house, love going there. Everyone take care, be safe, and enjoy your life!
After a windy freezing day exploring the Japanese countryside today, I get to relax at home and watch another amazing video of yours 🙂 I wish I was still in LA exploring all these places you explore…
Amazing! I wonder if they have problems with flooding 🤔 Another great vid guys. I really appreciate how well crafted your videos are. Cheers from my side of the world.
The last flood that caused lots of damage was in 1969. We changed our address so our entrance is west now instead of north. The Castle is built inside a reservoir, so preparations for Winter are always important to make sure the reservoir drains.
This is absolutely amazing! Mr. Rubel had to have been a genius. He must have had some great people skills as well since he clearly got many volunteers to help him. Please consider visiting Nitt Witt Ridge in Cambria, CA. It is also a landmark built from recycled materials and has a fascinating history.
This has to be one of my favorite videos from you guys! Such an amazing place, built out of so much hard work and passion. Thanks for sharing it with us!
What a great job you do and always make me feel like I need to come see this for myself. I am so glad I joined patreon to help you both continue these great works.
What an incredible and interesting place. So much detail. Just goes to show what can be done if you follow your dreams and are passionate enough. Thanks for sharing
That is so cool.. I wonder if this will reach some body who is able to, and willing to repair the clock tower mechanism. If I lived in the area I'd definitely be there at least every month.
Thank you for thinking of the bills. It makes us feel understood. Michael the builder, as a landlord, spent his life turning off switches and reminding all the residents as well.
Thanks for watching! Yes, there was certainly a lot more to @Rubel Castle - We recently released a bonus video on Tin Palace and have also released several clips/additional segments from other highlights of Rubel on our Patreon www.patreon.com/oddityodysseys
The clock is currently running again. The newest video on the Castle channel praises our volunteers for keeping it running. A lot of the weight inside our pendulum is printing type. We believe someone bumped the pendulum and the type spilled off balance. This possibly happened during filming by HBO of "Our Flag Means Death." Even though it works now, we still hope to have a visit from an expert in tower clocks.
Mike and my Father worked together, driving bus for the Glendora school district. I spent countless hours hanging out there. Mike was a great guy!

I live about 7 minutes from the castle . Over my 40 years living in the area I have always have wanted to go. Someday I will.
Hopefully you'll get a chance to see it soon! Check out (rubeltours.org) for some information. We can't recommened it enough!

You make me miss California!
Lived in Glendora almost a decade, and never knew that was there!
Cool story and cool editing!! 👍
"How do we get outta here" ...who wants to leave such a beautiful castle.
We are already hoping to go back soon! Truly a beautiful place to visit.
Wow guys this one is really cool you sure know how to find them great job.
Great episode, and Bethany is looking especially cute.
Rubel Castle is a fascinating oddity. Well done, Drew and Bethany!
Thanks again 👍🏾😷👍🏻🇨🇦🇵🇭🇺🇸
Thanks, guys, for the tour. I once lived in Glendora but never heard of this place. Great story!
This is good one 😃
One man's dream that is totally awesome
Another nutty, crazy place. Again, glad you're back & getting out. Also glad I get the notices when you post. Cheers!

What a magical place. I'd love living there. It's also amazing to me the amount of donated material and labor.
Sweet!
Wow love it best videos
That was really cool and a great use of recycled materials!!
Indeed!
I'm glad you guys went here! I recently watched a Huell Howser episode where he went here, and was hoping that you guys would go too.
We love Huell!

We have the clock working again, but we still wish to locate someone who knows a lot more than we do.
@@RubelCastleCalifornia That's Great to hear!
Hopefully you do find someone with the knowledge you need.
@@scottstewart3884 I'm contacting the experts I can find. None in California, so I hope one of them travels here and we can hire.
Hate to pay that light bill !!!
Thank you for thinking of the bills. It makes us feel understood. Michael the builder, as a landlord, spent his life turning off switches and reminding all the residents as well.
Unfortunately, there are thousands of people living in Los Angeles currently using recycled materials for shelter these days.
I have just about that number of field stones to make something that big, 0ver 40 years of fucking picking stones need some space
Where is the house? I saw a lot you did not show us, I thought the old man lived there when he was building.
Bethany & Drew filmed everywhere, so if their episodes are 20 minutes or less, they will need more episodes to show it all.

@@RubelCastleCalifornia oh HBO ... don´t let them in again 😅 Im glad it´s working.
What's that thing that Drew has slung on to himself? I looks very techie.
Very techie, indeed! His mic is attached to the strap, plus it holds a few key equipment pieces we use at all times for filming. :)
