  • You might wish to drink the nectar of calm abiding,
But unless you interrupt the stream of external activity,
There's no way to prevent internal distraction.
And you must eradicate this wandering within.
Unless you stem the flow of mental distraction,
You'll never arrive at single-pointed concentration.
Build a secure dam, therefore, with mindfulness.
And apply vigilance whenever you rest for a while.
Return continually to the state of non-distraction,
And strive to extend the duration of the experience.
When it becomes familiar, apply yourself further.
Conquer the enemy, undercurrent thoughts, and generate calm.
    When you gain stability,
Continue until the practice is effortless and you achieve pliancy
    And genuine śamatha-calm abiding.
Apply yourself uninterruptedly, balancing tension and repose.
Prolonged training in what is difficult can be discouraging,
So begin by strengthening your determination and diligence.
Then, in the middle, strive continually without interruption.
In the end, you'll gain strength and savour the fruits of joy.
This is how your efforts will yield their excellent reward.
Mipham Rinpoche is a celebrated Nyingma scholar and practitioner. He is revered for being a prolific writer and for reinvigorating the Nyingma monastic university tradition with his commentaries on central Indian Buddhist texts including the Five Treaties of Maitreya, Chandrakirti's Introduction to the Middle Way, Shantarakshita's Adornment of the Middle Way, and his commentary on Shantideva's Wisdom Chapter. In addition, he is well known for his lengthly composition, The Epic of Gesar of Ling, which arose out of Tibet's oral tradition and is said to be equivalent to the Greek Iliad or the Odyssey. Lama Mipham was a student of the famed Nyingma master, Patrul Rinpoche, and was the principle teacher of Shechen Gyaltsap Rinpoche who went on to teach beloved teachers such as Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö.
