This song is massively underrated.
Formaldehyde is a chemical that prevents flesh from decaying. It is used in embalming for funerals. I am in love with the album. It is very reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen ..notably "Nebraska". The songs are mature and reflect the point of view of an older, worldlier Tom Smith. I love all the albums..they mark periods in my life. Thanks for reading this.

I wouldnt say they are underrated. They have 7 top 10 albums in UK. They are very well known in Europe. In Greece they play in front of 10,000 people. Underrated are bands like Porcupine tree

When my boyfriend passed away I listened to the editors almost nonstop for months yet this song evaded me.
Even this would have been perfect for the time, I'm glad I didn't discover it till recently because it's quickly become one of my favorites and doesn't trigger horrible, horrible memories like "bones" and "every end has a start".

I’m very sorry for your loss. The entire “An End Has A Start” album, to me, is the perfect album to listen to when it comes to coping and coming to terms with death because the entire album is about that.

Editors are an innovative band whose songs refer to most styles, they definitely draw admiration and tips from the classical rock approach but they also play out some lovely electronic experiments, which is really difficult and quite impossible for so many other bands. Making the sound cross well is not easy, it requires a chunk of competences and dedication you may not imagine. I figured out their skills are getting the results, they're achieving a good placement in the charts but their music will be highlighted and remembered for being the expression of the soul and the bucket of your hidden thoughts, from the sad events to the happiest daily moments. This is the way I feel and it was worth to rate this band, a band I often relate to and a band I'm proud of being addicted to. No more word!

I read in an interview that Tom saw a documentary of Angelina Whalley's work, where human body parts were shown and it inspired him to make this song. :) We don't know what love is and we use scientific methods to get to know more about love so we cut and preserve body parts in formaldehyde. With the message: I'm yours, do what you want with me, you can cut me in pieces.

Simon, thanks for your reply. I too find myself enraptured by The Weight of Your Love. I find something new..a lyrical treasure unique in it's personal meaning to my life, each and every time I listen. This is the gift of the great storytellers, like Springsteen. This album is a musical and lyrical masterpiece worthy of such comparison.
i think the masked people represent his daemons and his grief at losing his wife, which is why he finds them in a bar and a church which are places people go to grieve. His grief nearly kills him, but the memory of his wife sterilises the wound like formaldehyde. meaning he can carry on living without being overwhelmed with grief but he always has to carry the memory of his wife wherever he goes
