“I was never afraid before you showed up” - Bill & Frank lived forever in their own little world
And you were my purpose. Dam broke.
It's a paradise, compared to the hellhole of other places overrun by zombies and worse, evil people.
For a long long time...
Bill leaving the cassette of his and Franks song there imagining Joel and Tess listening to it while driving into the sunset.
Ya, this did it 😭😭😭😭😭
He is indeed a guy with a big heart
Ok that thought just crushed me…😭😭😭
Joel and ellie in this part was so heartbreaking I loved it
and the gate was left open... :D
This episode proves that this is the best videogame adaptation of all time because it strays so far from the source material but somehow manages to be a phenomenal change and a fantastic episode and still feel like the last of us.
Honestly the fact that this episode strayed so far from the game moved me even more. I expected Bill and Frank to end up hating each other like they did in the game, so the fact that they got something of a "happy" ending really got me, even if it was still so damn sad
@BlackholeTtson452 I fully agree! This so-called "filler episode" helps to set the stage for the changes that are happening within Joel.
Here is a man who has understandably shut down within himself as a result of the horrors he has witnessed and the personal losses that he experienced. And as the story goes on this whole interaction with Ellie restores his humanity.
This episode, with its beautiful portrayal of how to remain human while the whole world falls apart around you, is perfect for helping to set the stage for that change.
I agree that there really wasn't much like this in TWD, and in the last season of GOT we saw how poor writing could ruin the development of a character.
This was absolutely incredible writing and character development, and I am having a hard time coming up with anything else in tv or movies that matches it.
@@blackholettson4522oh man if it’s like the game then it will be action packed
If you say this then it means that you are clearly bias and haven't seen Arcane
This serie is far from being the best videogame adaptation ever. This version of Ellie is far away from the original. The features that made Ellie's personality so unique and wonderful are gone. This actress just barely gets the job done, but nothing special.
Apparently _Long Long Time_ by Linda Ronstadt had a 5000% increase in plays on Spotify after this episode. I hope a bunch of people discovered her because of this; she's fantastic but comparatively forgotten _(she was the best selling female artist of the 1970's and has 11 Grammys, but very few people know her today)._
I'm glad a new generation got to hear her. Incomparable voice and actual was amazing in multiple genres. Rock, pop spanish-speaking, opera, big band, country ... It's so sad that she can no longer sing
@@mhart78676 Linda singing Different Drum might be the greatest singing I've ever heard.
My feelings exactly. It's more than past the time that new music lovers discovered Linda's angelic voice and soulful interpretation of every song she ever sang and recorded. My generation fell in love with her and we still have a deep well of adoration for her.
BTW, Linda is also the Spanish word for beautiful. That is no coincidence.
Wasn’t into Linda Ronstadt. Never even heard of this song. Like maybe others, l looked it up. Was very touched by this song’s lyrics. And, man. THIS was the PERFECT way to end the episode.
Now I know her. Wonderful voice.
I am so glad they didn’t show the bodies. Bill’s letter was respected. That is such an obvious and correct choice, but a worse director would have thought, “hey let’s show them in each others arms”.
But we saw the dead bodies of those who suffered. Thank you for not showing those who didn’t.
It was a great choice. Respecting Bill’s wishes to not come into the bedroom. The shot of the window was a good visual, stirring up Bill/Frank presence for the audience. The town itself feels like a monument to the life that Bill and Frank built together.
yeah that would’ve actually sent me to hysterics it would’ve been devastating to see :( The open window from their bedroom was a nice touch.
@@katleiz And you know they contemplated it too. They had to have thought about it. They could have easily ruined this entire episode by that and that alone. Would have been a real "what the actual fuck were they thinking" moment.
@@gagetaylor192 It also invites a small element of doubt, though. We never see their bodies- and one of the big caveat of storytelling is that if you don't see a body they didn't die.
@@kingarthur8616 Well in this case you know for a fact they're dead given all of the context. You literally watch Frank drink the wine with the pills inside and you also see Bill chug down his wine too and then he confirms he already put the pills in the bottle. With him saying "enough to kill a horse".
the window shot is beautiful by itself but I think that may be a reference to the original game's title screen. I'm so impressed by their love to the game. perfection
It is, they said so in the podcast
They said in the podcast that they initially had an idea that at the start of every episode would be a "screen that says press any button to start"
And each episode on the main screen would show a different window with the curtains blowing in the breeze until the viewer started the show.

No doubt, this is an award winning episode. Mark my words. So beautifully done.

This episode might be one of the greatest episodes of television I’ve ever seen. The changes they made were perfect and encapsulated the messages of the game and the themes perfectly.
I said the same, one of the best episodes in television history
here here , I WAS STUNNED.
I agree! I was so touched by the story. The song made it so much more emotional. It was bittersweet but so satisfying.
Hard agree, honestly, the fact that this episode came out of left field and just shit all over the past 15 years of television just goes to show how good this episode is.
@@SecondSunofficial Eh, the last fifteen years had monumental episodes of shows like Breaking Bad and Chernobyl, so let's not get carried away. But Long Long Time was certainly better than most modern episodes I've seen.
My elderly mother watched this episode and for the final shot of the open window, she said "Bill and Frank are at the window in spirit; happily watching Joel and Ellie drive away while they listen to their favourite song and happy that Joel came back to read Bill's letter and inherit their supplies."
Did your elderly mother watch two bearded man having sex naked
My gosh i got goosebumps 🥺😭
Bro this was Beautiful 🥲
@gadzaver yeah, she said it was nice that they found each other and stayed together for so many years and did nice normal things together like painting and gardening while living in a dangerous monster world.
Dude that was so pure and truly beautiful!
definitely an emotional episode. its easy to cry for Bill and Frank. its even easier to cry for Bill if you played the game. to see him go from a miserable isolationist who's last words to Joel were "Get the F outta my town", to a man who traded survival for love
I like this new character arc for Bill, which is also reflected in Joel's transformation as he begins to feel protective of Ellie, leaving behind his refusal to bond with other people. As does Tess. It's like that apocalyptic world first takes everything away from them and hurts them but in the end they always end up back to who they really are, good people
The first Bill was constrained by the videogame structure. I love how they extended it here
@@lblanc8107 I always liked Bill's character and the way he was done in the game but this show REALLY took the game down a peg for me. I almost dislike how the game handled it now.
I never thought I cry over a love story about gay people no offense im just saying im impressed that's love right there
I dont think Bill traded survival for love. I mean, in many ways he survived because of love, I guess.
now i understand why tess wanted ellie to go to bill and franks because she can actually live there for years and be safe and bill and frank would actually raise her but only after when they died is where joel’s journey to get ellie across the country to the fireflies actually starts
You're right
After reading your comment, I watched the scene again before Tess died and I think you're right. She said they will take care of Ellie and then Joel can go 🥺
It's an unpopular opinion, but this version of Bill and Frank is way better than the game.
This is pretty much all I'm hearing. So I would say it's a popular opinion now.
Much better, the episode was very engaging from start to finish, you wanted to see everything. I am glad with the Change in the game this is a very long sequence that doesnt add too much except a better relashionship between Joel and Ellie, cant wait for Pittsburg this is was one of the most dense areas of development in the game, when you arrive in Colorado, Ellie is already very important to Joel.
Now that I think about it. Yes. From Bill's perspective. I think that he had a really bad ending in the game. So in the Show, he cared only about himself but when he met Frank. He started caring about people. But in the game. I think that he still didn't care for people but also when he met Frank he changed a bit. But after a while he changed back to caring about himself.
I disagree
This version was great for TV the other version was great for the video game
I love the final shot of the window. Even tho we didn't actually get to see their dead bodies, I could definitely feel their presence with just that shot. I had a very strong, clear image of them in bed together, spooning until they died 😭
I was floored by this episode, I wasn’t expecting it at all. Beautifully done, maybe one of the best episodes of any series in television history
Agreed. I think it's my favourite series ever and it's only three episodes in

This was an episode that carries a ton of weight. It was insanely good
The same here ..
Same here broo😢😢
Writers: we need to give Joel a car
Also writers: let's write the best, most emotional side plot of any work of fiction.
I don’t know if this was intentional or not, but it is interesting how the show treats the dead. Those who die unwillingly and fight against it have their bodies shown dead, while those embracing death are never shown. It is almost like those who reject death are never able to be at peace, while characters who embrace it get to Rest In Peace without disturbance. Tess, Bill, and Frank all chose to die on their own terms and we never saw their deaths or their bodies, while raiders and soldiers die brutally and are shown dead on the ground.
Wow, that's an amazing way to see it which I never realized before. Thanks for pointing it out!
Sarah 😭
That's a good observation, I think it's all round over how Hollywood is demonic
Henry as well, he embraced the fact that he has no purpose without Sam anymore so he ended his own life embracing his death at his own hands. Just like Tess, Bill, and Frank
@@naturallyproblematic That’s sad, but you’re right.
And they stay in that room for a long long time together.
I want a love like that.
When i noticed bill was also gonna die my mind was blown, i thought it was just a setup to see how broken he was in the present but it totally got me by surprise, masterful episode
This episode was not "TV" it was art.
I thought they were going to stick to the game as well. Like maybe the drug in the wine won’t really work on Bill. But this one is well done. Love it too much
Nothing is ever gonna hit this hard, like the end of this episode. A true masterpiece!
This was a beautiful episode. Something that really struck me was when Joel said, “Leave it, this is Linda Ronstadt.” For me, I really felt that. It’s a reminder of what life was once like and for a second Joel has a smidgen of joy. I could feel the heaviness of this scene; the longing of a time where you could just enjoy the simple things in life instead of watching in horror as the world decays around you and normalcy is thing of the past. I also feel like the audience is with Joel in that aspect and we also feel the heartbreak of realizing how the former world and the joys of what it has given us, are things that Ellie has never known. It’s so much more than a young kid not knowing a popular singer from the 60s/70s.
10 years from now, I wouldn't be surprised if this is ranked among the greatest TV episodes of all time. Even the people who hated it only added to it's infamy.
But not its infamy.
This version of Bill and Frank makes more sense for a tv show and the game's version of Bill makes more sense for a videogame. Both are great in their own ways.
Yep that's what I was telling my cuzzing the other day
This episode won a DGA (Directors Guild of America) award!
So well-deserved!!
I am just glad that Linda lives to see this beautiful reason to be alive.
My wife and I were watching this episode and after it was over I had to go into the other room because I had tears running down my cheek and I didn't want her to see me cry, best television I have ever seem
Growing up gay in the 70's it never occurred to me that I'd ever hear a straight man say he cried about the love story of two men. Your story brought tears to my eyes, I thank you for that, and I'm so glad that men like you exist. Your wife is fortunate to have a man who's secure in his masculinity.
@@tjwash5118 thank you for the kind statement
I must admit, I thought it was going to be a bit vulgar but WOW, what an episode, great from start to finish. What a love story !
The addition of “Long, Long Time” just made it all come together. Not for being one to feel emotional over a show, this episode had my heart breaking. 😢
Linda Ronstadt owned one of the purest voices to ever grace Pop music .
Glad to see the youth getting to know her.
I wish more people could go out like Bill & Frank did. On their own terms, peaceful and happy.

The open window at the end had me crying!
This scene made me sob like a little baby
I love the subtlety when Joel let's out that little smile. Then you see ellie start to smile back, the chemistry between Pedro and Bella is really good. Can't wait to see thier relationship progress in the final episodes, absolutely love this show so much.
I don't usually cry when I watch movies or TV shows. Only a handful got me to cry. This one had me balling my eyes out. What a beautiful episode.
One of the best episodes of TV for a long long time
This episode is television history. As a standalone short film, it really should be showered with awards.
Gosh I wasn't expecting this kind of pain. It's beautiful, the type of love some of us dreamt about. Thanks Murray Bartlett and Nick Offerman.
I don’t know anything about this game, I’m just an old gay man who got recommended this episode. I reluctantly watched and so glad I did, it was great storytelling and moved me to tears.
Happy 1 year anniversary to this magnificent episode! 🥰🍓
Apologies to those who love this show and the game that inspired it, but I only came here because I read that Linda Ronstadt's "Long Long Time" is leading Spotify's streaming thanks to this show. I'm a great admirer of hers, and am grateful that a current show that garnered more than 4 million viewers would feature her. Wish I got HBO because now my curiosity has been piqued!
You won’t regret watching it
And actually that number is waay bigger right now :)
@@AdrianUng13 So elated to hear that, Adrian. Truly hope young folks like "Ellie" check her out. She was called the "Queen of Rock" in the 70's, and then took us all on a musical odyssey that only ended when she lost her voice due to illness. Thanks again, Adrian, for keeping me updated--hope the Spotify hits keep coming! 😉
You should absolutely watch the show. This episode made me feel so much emotion to the point that it physically hurt. Amazing television!
You'll love it ❤️
The line "and you were my purpose" makes me tear up every time I hear it
What makes it a great scene is the context and that it gives the feeling of nostalgia. The windows with this song "long long time" playing reminds me of when I was a kid sleeping in the afternoon with the radio on staring at the windows. 💕 What an art
THIS!!!!
Bittersweet and totally heartbreaking
the best part is that although the change was made in the show, the plot doesn’t change!
1. Joel and Ellie still go to Bill’s town
2. Joel gets his truck
3. Joel learns a life lesson from Bill
it’s still the same plot but different in terms of events occurring
The show would get so boring if it just followed the exact plot of the game. "Let's get from point A to point B while not getting shot or eaten."
While it makes for a fun game, it would be extremely repetitive for a show. I'm glad that they are hitting the core points/plots of the game, but are mixing up how they tell the story.
The shot of the bedroom window is so effective. Love this episode so much. 😭
This episode was just beautiful, sad but beautiful
I just know Linda Ronstadt’s song gained a lot of downloads after this episode aired. I loved how the final shot at the window was a homage to the opening loading screen of the first game. I also liked how it didn’t show Bill and Frank’s corpses cause that’s not how they should be remembered. Believing that their spirits were watching Joel and Ellie drive off is a nice way to think about the ending
This episode was orchestrated to perfection, I was definitely not expecting something like this. It’s the bitter-sweet feeling that remains after that final window shot that allows me to think that this is maybe one of the best executed episodes in modern television. Simply astounding…

I love that this solidified the fact video game adaptions are taking over: The Last of Us, Super Mario Bros., Five Nights at Freddy's. All KILLED it this year.
This is where Joel starts to care about Ellie
Every once in a while a music supervisor comes along and changes your life.
What really gets me is the way Joel smiles and Ellie smiles in response
I just noticed that too! That was probably the first time she got a genuine smile out of him I can't wait to see the bond between them continue to grow.
"It's better than nothing" is probably something Sarah would say. haha. 🥲
Simply a masterpiece of television, unlikely to be surpassed for a long long time... :)
Mazin wanted Bill and Frank to initially connect through a song about lonely heartache and "making your peace with the fact that you will always be alone". Struggling to find a song, he spoke to his friend Seth Rudetsky in February 2021, requesting a show tune like "I Miss the Music" from the musical Curtains (2006). Rudetsky suggested "Her Face" from Carnival! (1961), which Mazin felt was "perfect". After discovering the scenario involved a closeted man singing to an openly gay man, Rudetsky suggested Linda Ronstadt's "Long, Long Time", written by Gary White; he felt the lyrics represented the lack of acknowledgement from one's love. Rudetsky received a consultancy credit for the episode. The song exhibits themes of unfulfilled love and how time heals wounds. The moment with Frank at the piano marks the beginning of profound change for Bill, who finds himself in an unexpected long-term, loving relationship that eventually sees him care for another individual. Bill and Frank's relationship is echoed in the lyrics:
Love will abide, take things in stride
Sounds like good advice, but there's no one at my side
And time washes clean, love's wounds unseen
That's what someone told me, but I don't know what it means.

Linda Ronstadt is one of my dad’s favorite singers of all time and he used to play this for me all the time when I was a kid. Putting this song in there was the cherry on top in making me ugly cry.
There's something profound about the end of this scene. Hard to put into words.

That, boys and girls, is what a great singer sounds like.
This scene and song made the whole thing better. That view from the window Joel and Ellie together.... My memory from playing the first game years ago.... That made me cry..
this episode was simply amazing
So glad to see this - I have replayed just this ending by itself so many times....so perfect - one of the best hours of television in memory, and this ending with the window seals it....
I cried watching this episode.
I like how they don't fully show Joel smiling. We only see a little of it from the side and on the rearview mirror. Shows well how he's starting to open up a little bit, but is still keeping himself at a distance.
This scene altered my brain chemistry
Music is an integral part of The Last of Us and that's what makes it so special
Just a beautifully rendered, perfectly executed closing...masterful. Bravo.
This was my favorite part of the episode. Everything comes full circle. The show of love and dedication between Bill and Frank framed by that shot from the window of Ellie and Joel as they drive away within in it. It beautifully gets across the central theme of love, not only romantic, but in all forms and relationships. Which for the building familial love between Joel and Ellie, Bill and Frank is both a projection and cautionary tale for them going forward. And all of this gotten across with this song and that shot of the window.
I have listened to this song so much after watching this, and now watching this again after probably a year im like their playing that song i know lol
It makes me sad that some people can't see past their hate and see just how beautiful Bill and Frank's story was. Not only did they survive an apocalypse together, they thrived and loved one another all the way through. Doesn't matter if they're two men in love, it matters that they endured everything thrown at them, and even chose to go out on their own terms together. Killing themselves together was tragic, yes, but also incredible loyal. They lived good lives, and they were happy with everything they got to do together. So glad Bill got a story rather than being a source of a truck for Joel like he was in the game. Both actors deserve Grammy's for their incredible performance
It's curious but I know that I will come back many times to listen this music for many years ❤️
Im still crying over this episode. My God. So good
If there ever was a way to watch something for the first time again I'd pick this episode in a heartbeat
This episode definte left an impact on me for sure, i’ll think about it for years to come. It was well done.
0:03 Love Ellie’s fascination with her experience of being in a car for the first time.
