    Awesome video Jason! Devils Lake is my favorite fishery hands down for ice season. Its to the point now you can catch a trophy of any kind. Walleye, perch, pike, crappie and I'm even a fan of those white bass. Man can they be fun!

    The meatstick is an amazing rod. I started out using mine for panfish, then caught a decent sized walleye on it one day- now I have several, and have two that are dedicated to deadstick. Paired mine up with the Okuma bait feed style reels. They work great!

    Walleyes are great fish to catch and even better to eat. I've never used live bait but I'm hooked. Nice catch & release.

      @@JasonMitchellOutdoors same here bud. But on a different subject a video explaning lake maps and how to search out structures would be awesome. I feel like my biggest issue is still finding these areas because I still dont fully understand new sonar systems myself so sometimes I feel like its more a shot in the dark and I get frustrated and end up just going to alot of the same old places ive just fished forever because I k ow whats there but that lake is huge and I feel like im missing alot of what this lake has to offer.

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  5 лет назад +1

      +jay baker the problem with spots on a map is that everybody else knows about them as well. The real jewels are shots in the dark and you might only find a spot or two a year like that. Side imaging is big, learn to interpret that and look for rock. One other thing, I was always looking for piles of rock for so long but scattered boulders in an area just fly under the radar for most anglers and can be really good especially if they are deeper than thirty feet. I feel your frustration as I go through the same headaches and I also ultimately go back to what works when I need a break.

  • @greyhunter9287
    @greyhunter9287 6 лет назад +1

    Jason do you prefer dead sticking with the rod and reel or would something like an Arctic style tip up typically work better since you can spread them out over the break. I know they would be
    outside the tent but even in 20 below they seem to work pretty well. I guess I'm just weighing the advantages toward bunching up as you are in this video vs covering more water.

    • @acmund
      @acmund 6 лет назад +1

      I use a combo. 1 Jigging rod, 2 dead sticks in the house, and 1 tip up a little ways away to test a new spot. As Jason was saying, being 10 feet away can mean you are off the mark...once you are on the best spot, multiple lines right there is best.

    • @greyhunter9287
      @greyhunter9287 6 лет назад +1

      @@acmund That's a great point on multiplying the lines, especially when fishing targeted spots like boulders and big outcroppings. Thanks for getting back to me. Learned alot and appreciate it!

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  6 лет назад

      @@greyhunter9287 I think it depends on the location. These rock piles are the size of a one stall garage and the sweet spots are pretty exact so you can go all in. If the spot is bigger or more of a long break, you can definitely spread out.

    What part of devil lake is good fishing.. lake so big

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  5 лет назад

      The entire lake can really be good from East to West. Don’t get intimated by the entire lake, just pick an area and fish it as there are walleyes all over the lake. We filmed this episode on the Main Lake but there are good rock pile spots in Pelican, the Minnewaukan Flats, Six Mile, the Main Lake, Mission, East Bay and East Devils Lake. Old arial maps or side imaging in the summer is how I find a lot of good rock spots.

    Is your K Drill 6" one? Do you feel the hole is too small for the big walleye?

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  5 лет назад +1

      Yes if you plan on targeting big fish especially when you get a lot of ice, you will lose some big fish at the hole with a six inch. I still use a six inch a lot just because I like how fast it is and how many holes I can get with a battery. The 8 inch K Drill works really good as well but you just get fewer holes with each battery.

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  6 лет назад +4

      I set them up that way so I can pull the rod forward towards the hole so that the fish doesn't get tension until I lift to set the hook. Since I am sitting next to them, I don't have to worry about fish pulling a rod down the hole.
