That depends on the hotkeys you are using. I am using "Smoke classic" hotkeys, so i press alt+esc for the node tree and F4 for the output of the currently selected node. Pressing F4 again toggles between the rgb and the matte output. F1 gives you the input of the selected node. If you want to control one node while watching the output of another, you can set the node you want to watch as a context view. To do that, right-click the node and select 'set as context' -> 'context1' (or any other number) and then you can press space+1 to see the output of context 1, regardless which node you have selected!
