Boot Restoration | Refurbishing These Boots With Vibram Wedge Soles
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 мар 2020
- In this video, we refurbish a pair of Wilcox heritage style boots with Vibram wedge soles. This customer wanted to ditch the traditional heel blocks and leather soles for a new look. After the resole, we finished these boots off with Saphir Greasy Leather Cream.

”...like I tell folks your heel block is your....??”
What do you tell the folks? The suspense is killing me. 1:39
I was thinking the same thing!!!
We need to know!!!
I don't know how I missed that. The block is like the rim and the toplift is the tire.
Trenton & Heath
Whew, thanks amigo.
Cork? Try again. I know oatmeal when I see it.
Shoe Restoration: I still have my first pair of combat boots from when i was in the military. They have definitely seen better days, but were always reliable and comfortable. I would love to see them looking "like new" again.
Shoe Restoration: My nine year-old son and I found your channel some months ago, we were instantly hooked. We appreciate the craft and functional art of shoe restoration and y’alls drive to make the channel educational and rooted a strong work ethic. I picked up a pair of cap-toe Allen Edmond Park Avenue after your eBay challenge. Picked up Saphire Creme 1925, Renovateur, and Crème Rénovatrice. I used acetone to get off all the old product and to get a good base to start on the conditioning, scratch filling, and buffing processes. I could not believe how beautiful the uppers came out. The soles and welts are a different story. The heels are worn to the blocks. You can see heavy loose leather fibers wearing almost completely away at the ball-joints with the welt totally separated from the uppers on one of the toes due to the stitching being worn out. One of the insoles has all these tiny circular marks as if some hasty cobbler was trying to get them out the door. I wanted to support my local cobblers but to my dismay no one had ever heard of JR or even grades of leather. One guy said “we have cow leather”. I did find one older well-respected cobbler but he said JR wouldn’t let him buy the soles and he was also having hand surgery on both hands so he would not be able to work on my shoes. His joints were not doubt the victim of his success. I said god bless and wished him well. For the time being the shoes are hanging on my pegboard like an old Toyota truck in the junkyard waiting for someone to realize it’s potential.
I'm a cobbler myself and I love watching you're video's as you actually get to do fun repairs! most of my customers just want as cheep as possible 😅 anyway keep up the amazing work guys!!
Shoe restoration.
Putting in the cork was so cool! I didn't expect it to come in that form. It looks a lot like wholegrain mustard haha
The boots look like a Wilcox “Shiloh”, calfskin lined, padded collar, Goodyear welt, and two part sole. They look pretty good once you started deconstructing them as well. Apparently a new company that had a kickstarter startup. Let me know if I’m correct on the brand. Dang, watched to the end and was right.
Looks exactly like mine, I bought them via the Kickstarter. They are stamped with Wilcox on the top of the tongue but it is fading away as they break in so maybe thats why they could not identify the brand on these?
Yeah, looks like the Wilcox Shiloh for sure. I almost bought a pair but I saw too many reviews of people saying their Wilcox boots were falling apart like soles coming apart after a month or 2. I hope they fixed their problems.
I love my Wilcox boots !
Shoe restoration: 25 year old Quoddy Moc Classic Ring Boot...Lived in a pair of these since 1972 but got this particular pair in the 90's. The leather soles were not made for everyday wear on hard surfaces and are not waterproof to say the least. Would like a sole that would allow them to be worn on hard surfaces but still maintains the character of the boot. I'm a luthier and have a great appreciation for traditional craftsmanship. Love watching your work and truly appreciate the sheer ability it takes to revive "well-loved shoes."
You guys... You guys!
Fantastic work as always. I love your videos!
It's weird how interested in watching shoes and boots being repaired I've become!
Love from Scotland ❤️
Outstanding craftmanship. It's therapeutic watching you guys work and performing minor miracles on footwear.
James Mosley Thank you very much!
There is nothing minor about what they do. That's multiple lifetimes of honed skill you are seeing.
@@dembrowi_n_c.5111 I stand by "minor miracles". We are talking about "shoes" , nothing with a face, parents or a heart beat.
@@jamesmosley8675 and you're still an asshole for calling their work minor. I stand by what I said and I'll raise you one. YOU couldn't do it.
Shoe Restoration: my favorite pair of vintage Justin Ropers are worn down at the heels and through the half soles. They have been my go to boots for many years but now sit forlornly to the side. I’d love to have them resoled with a Japanese style double stitched welt, mid sole, thin rubber half sole and a block heel. Love the videos guys, keep em coming!
Nothing I like better than seeing guys who have great footwear. Once again, you magicians have worked your magic. Great work/ video. Sending my best to you guys from here in Canada.
Shoe restoration. I love the work you do. It's satisfying to watch and the level of craftsmanship you two display. Keep up the good work
"Watch until the end" ... what fool would not watch Trenton and Heath videos until the end. There's always something to learn in them.
thepowderriverfarrier thank you so much. We try hard.
lol was searching the whole time in comments for the brand name... this is a true statment :P nice boots n love the new soles!
What happens to the uncut rest of the nail left in the shoe?
Shoe Restoration! I have an old pair of Justin lace up ropers that needs new soles. I enjoy your videos!
Great video. Very generous of you guys, giving shoe sole repair for the rest of the year to a lucky monthly winner. Looking forward to those videos. Thanks guys for all your work and dedication.
Shoe Restoration : AE Park Aves that have been with me through many memories! ... interviews/first job after college, wedding day, getting me out of Atlanta snowmageddon 2014 ... but very many normal/mundane days as well. Keep up the good work, guys!
Shoe Restoration: early 90's Wolverine Hunting boots (rubber soles) wore all the treads off and some leather cracking and no longer weather proof.. No cobbler will touch these in my area.
Dave Horlacher Well dang!! They must not be as good as these guys then.
if you don't win, I believe you're able to pay them to restore your shoes and then ship them in?
Shoe restoration: I just got my first ever pair of goodyear welted shoes--some used Allen Edmonds Fifth Avenues. They don't look nearly as bad as this boot (hopefully no one's do), but they could certainly use new soles.
guys, i have a pair of brown ankle boots that i’ve worn for 20+ years. they’ve had few half soles throughout their life w/no polish at all! this was intentional to give them worn look but, as you can imagine, i went too far. now, they absolutely need the of someone like you. they might be a good challenge and possibly good material for a shoe restoration video. thank you. btw, i find your work to be very inspirational, glad i found this channel.
So mesmerizing watching you guys work. I have a new found appreciation for shoes and boots that are well made with quality materials and superior craftsmanship. You both do amazing work. I could watch your videos all day!
Shoe Restoration: Johnston and Murphy Semi Brogue oxfords I bought off of ebay and restored the uppers myself, however soles and heel pads need replaced.
shoe restoration: im a college student applying for graduate roles next year and my boots desperately need some love from you guys before my interviews
Sole Restoration: I bought a pair of Allen Edmonds online for $20 and really wanted to do what you guys did a few videos back about buying some cheap shoes online and investing the money into a new resole to make them brand new. Really love your content didn’t know watching shoes get resoled could be so relaxing and fun to watch. Thank you gentlemen!
Thank you so much for your videos. This teacher has found them so entertaining and informative during this quarantine.
Shoe restoration : I’ve got a pair of very good shoes and I love to see you guys doing it. think they will be my lucky shoes ))
But I am so far and it will take time to reach you.
Anyway i like what you do so please keep going.
P.S I like your voices :)
Shoe restoration: I have a pair of a testoni. That my parents bought for me when I first come to the states. Still loves and wear them everywhere. They are Blake stitch and have worn in to the welt a lot! Hard to find a shop to work on them cause it’s Blake stitch
💕 Wow, super job, guys !! Love how these boots turned out ! And I got to watch Trenton rub in the oil/conditioner a little longer than I've gotten to see in the other videos I've seen so far ! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 That's really satisfying ! ASMR time !👌🏼🙋🏻♀️
Great video as always - classy! You guys are a great team!
Shoe restoration : I’ve got a pair of blown out vintage Justin cowboy boots I’d live to get resoled. I think it’d be a challenge for sure 😅😂 a fair portion of the leather outsole is gone
Chris Willman Oo buddy. That does sound like a challenge.
TheBiteSizedCrafter its a shame they are my favorite handed down to me from my father. Unfortunately I didn’t really understand that resoling was a thing you’re supposed to do at the time....
Shoe Restoration: Recently got a pair of Allen Edmonds loafers on eBay for about $5! They are my first pair of Goodyear welted shoes. I'm excited to wear them come summer, but they have seen better days.
Shoe restoration : Your work is top notch and for some reason I find it totally therapeutic to watch. Thanks so much for posting.
I have a pair of ancient LL. Bean East Point Moc toe boots that I have been neglecting for far too long.
SHOW RESTORATION
Great work as always. I bought my dad a 450 dollar pair of beautiful Acemarks Belgian loafers and within three months, he’s worn through the heel pad and block and the sole stitches have worn out in the front and they’re starting to come apart. Definitely a candidate for a restoration. And I know the RUclips community would love to see more acemarks content. Cheers!
Shoe Restoration:
Carlos Santos cap toe oxfords. My first nice shoe. Six years old. I dont think you guys have done a video on that brand yet!
Glad you guys are safe from the Tornado. We know all about those in KS
Trey Greenleaf Thank you so much. A lot of damage and pain in our area.
@@TrentonHeath keep up the good fight Gents! And congrats on your channel success. I remember when you guys had only 150 subscribers and now look at you guys!
Trey Greenleaf Thank you sir!
Trey Greenleaf Hi Trey! You were randomly selected as one of the ten finalists. Can you please email us some pics of the shoes? Customerservice@potterandsons.com. Thank you!

"God I hope I get it" lol mine are in pretty bad shape. Redwing chukkas with some of the stitching blown out worn out heel and some sort of mystery epoxy that got on them lol.
Shoe restoration: my black boots I wear when I go horse back riding,it was the first pair of boots I ever got and had them for a long time and would love to finally bring them back to life
Thanks from the Netherlands. I watch one of your vids almost every night. They're relaxing and interesting, and I always enjoy it when an expert explains their craft.
I also learned I'm not taking proper care of my suede shoes, so hopefully they'll now last a lot longer.
Shoe restoration
Hope I’m randomly picked. As some of the others, mine are some cowboy boots that pretty worse for wear. Worn heels and soles that have been so revered they’re holy.
Shoe restoration: these guys are the best in the business.
Thank you very much!
how do you know ?
They are verry good but I do belive Brian the boot maker is the best I've found as far as boot re-soling
alex brunswick ... Brian is constantly removing the welt of all boots also of its unnecessary. a sole can be replaced 3 to 5 times on the same welt. a welt can be replaced 3 to 5 times on a boot. removing a welt eats away 3 to 5 possible resolings...

Shoe Restoration - another great video guys! Great job, and keep them coming!!
My father is a cobbler and has been for longer than I've been alive. Watching your content can be quite nostalgic for that reason.
Shoe restoration:
Bought Allen Edmonds Strand off poshmark, want to get the leather soles replaced with dainite, new cork so I can break them in to my own feet!
Shoe Restoration: I have a pair of Allen Edmond loafers that have beat up soles. I think they are worn through in a couple places. The uppers are still pretty nice, though.
I love this channel!! I can watch this guys all day... Such professionals. Truly inspiring!
SHOE RESTORATION - love your guy's work! Love watching the Dainite rubber soles being put on
Is there a reason you smeared cork on the shoe rather than using sheet cork like you usually do?
Johnathan T
Hi Johnathan - that‘s what I wanted to know also
Haven’t seen you use that corking technique before (Cork “paste” and iron). When do you use that method vs the “sheet” of cork that you tear or cut to fit the welt cavity? Any difference in end result or performance?
I was just going to ask this and would love to know. Since I started watching this channel, another guy's video came up aka "Hammer Time" who swears by sheets. I'm curious to know the advantages of each.
I would assume the paste might be used on a boot like this with a very high and prevalent shank and a overall deeper space to fill out compared to sheets on something more flat and even like a dress shoe, but I have no experience as a cobbler I'd love to hear from the man himself on it tbh.
I, too, was going to ask this question.
The paste version is a little more water resistant, but other than that no real difference. Most ready to wear goodyear welted shoes/boots come with paste.
I noticed that paste too.
Shoe restoration: I've got a pair of Thursday Explorers I wore for a year straight on a Navy ship for 8-24 hours a day that are beat to hell and desperately in need of a resole. Been putting it off a month or so now, great opportunity. Love the channel guys, keep it up!
Your videos are like mental floss for me. I watch them and they take my mind off of all the troubles and stress in daily life. There is something about pride of craftsmanship that cheers me up.
SHOE RESTORATION: I have a nice pair of elephant ear hide boots that my father had made a long time ago, they were a perfect fit and he passed them to me, I wore them a lot then, sent them to someone for some work, they came back and lasted about 3 months, everything fell apart on them, cheap leather wore out fast, bad stitching busted BAD... they changed my shank shape I think, because it felt like i had a magic marker running down the middle of my foot, nails bent over under the heel were not nice to stand on, and something they did made them tight over the top of the foot, they were not comfortable to have on for more than an hour or so.... in short these poor boots need a LOT of tender love and care to return them to their former glory.
Jesus. I'd love to get my full-leather shoes done but I think I vote for this guy to get these boots done lol. They sound horrifying after being "fixed".
Shoe restoration. I have a pair of boots that my late husband gave to me. The sole has come off of one. They weren't expensive boots but I can't bring myself to part with them. Would live to have them restored. I enjoy watching these videos.
Shoe restoration: a really beat pair of birkenstocks that need different soles
Shoe restoraton: These videos are fun to watch. Prior to watching these I was always confused with shoe construction and rebuilding, etc. Keep putting out good content gents!
I love how this restoration is so different! From the last sole to the different cork! Been binging videos
Shoe Restoration: I have a pair of Church's monk strap men's shoes that I bought when I was 16 in 1999 and the uppers are in decent shape but the heels and soles are completely worn out. These shoes have a lot of sentimental value to me and I'd love to get them repaired. Thanks.
Shoe restoration: I have a pair of redwing logger boots I recieved from my father-in-law, in desperate need of repair.
Shoe restoration: I have two pairs of Allen Edmonds Cove Drive shoes (no longer made 😟) with these soles and they were listed as recraftable, but I always wondered how that would be done, since I can’t see stitches on the bottom. This explains it so well. I happen to really love the look and feel of the shoes! Thanks guys for educating us on how to take care of our shoes. Sorry to hear your little shop I visited in Brenton in closing, but it’s good to see your business growing. Well earned!
I love the videography. The close up shots are amazing. I love all that you guys do. Who knew that watching shoes being repaired would be so interesting and educational.
Thank you very much!
Shoe restoration: my soles actually look like these boot soles. And the leather is cracked. Sucks!
Shoe Restoration - my beloved Frye Melissa boots need your loving care. Every local cobbler has told me they aren’t worth fixing which has made me a very sad boot lover.
Jessica Devine I had a guitar repair guy say the same once. I was like dude, just fix it it and keep your opinions to yourself. I hate that mentality. Best of luck
Frye boots should be more than worth getting repaired. Best of luck.
Yea-NO, Frye boots are not inexpensive, average $200 plus a pair. The leather is very good, of course they are worth it to repair. Not everyone is a true cobbler- these local shoe repair are sadly just that. Most can’t even put good tacks on your heels anymore.
If it is worth it to you, why wouldn’t they just shut up and take the money? Dingalings.
Shoe restoration - Love watching your work! You guys are setting the standard for shoe care and restoration.
Rhoi Carpena Thank you very much!
Very nice job. ( as usual ) that cork paste application was artwork.
1:37 My heel block is my... what!?
Same, lol!
Haha...bad edit. Heel block is your rim and the heel pad is your tire.
the owner should get his feet checked out, that is very abnormal wear patterns on those shoes.
I see a grave ankle injury or misformation on the right foot yet those people can afford expensive shoes, but won't go see a podiatrist... :(
Maybe operates a tractor and heels slide around a lot.
It's from kneeling down on one knee. The owner probably kneels on the same knee every time. My boots always wear the same from doing just that.
@@mcgaugh57 I was thinking something like that or they use them for riding dirt bikes or some sort of motorcycle
Lol I was thinking the same. Seems like a spinal cord injury, they're out of alignment so he has one leg that is longer, so h walks on his outer edge to maintain balance. I can relate my shoes look the same.
Shoe Restoration
I love what you guys do. The video editing is great too. I’m not a cobbler, but I appreciate excellent workmanship!
Keep up the good work!

Shoe Restoration - Alden Chukka Boots in Color 8 Shell Cordovan. They were purchased in 2008, and they were my very pair of “high end” shoes. I wore them though the cold winters when attended grad school in Ann Arbor, MI. I still remember the first time I slipped on ice while wearing these to my summer internship interview. 😂 Oh boy, that brings back the memories. I have been following your channel since your early days. I am glad to see the channel is doing well. Keep up the good work, guys! 👍
“Shoe Restoration “.... the sound of your knife cutting the leather... 🔪👍
Hahaha that is precisely the part that my wife hates when I watch the videos
Shoe Restoration: I've got a pair of Thursday Boot Co Statesman that I got as my first pair of goodyear welted shoes. I first looked into getting something that I could have fixed and try to make last because of watching your videos! Thanks a ton guys!

Shoe Restoration: I love your channel and watch every video. Thank you guys for the great work!
Shoe Restoration: What an awesome idea! This is such a unique way to connect with subscribers! I can't wait to see the videos.
Excellent job dudes, your job quality is wonderful,I always watch your videos and enjoy your type of working, good luck guys.
I’m happy to see you guys using hot cork. Most people just use thin sheets of cork and call it a day.
Hot cork fills all the gaps and is more like a completely new shoe. Excellent work fellas.
Shoe Restoration: your videos have always been very relaxing to watch. Keep it up!
Shoe Restoration: First off y'all do fantastic work and I want to thank you for the informative videos. And second, I have a pair of Donald Pliner drivers that are pretty rough and could really use some attention.
You guys always do such nice work. Looks like another very comfy pair out the door.
I don't understand.... why is this so satisfying to watch? Thanks guys!
Shoe Restoration : Love your work! True craftsmanship, I have a lovely pair of Allen Edmonds Loafers which could use some attention.
Great video. The worn in patina on these boots shows the best reason to resole good boots. You can’t buy boots that look as good as that, you have to create them.
That’s so awesome of you guys to give back, who wouldn’t like a shoe restoration!
Shoe Restoration: Bought a pair of boots a few years ago and love them so much. They are my favorite shoes and are just coming to the end of life now. The leather is still good, but the stitching is coming out and the sole is getting very thin. They are a wingtip style boot, brown, with a lot of broughing on them. An in between type of boot that aren't good year welted, but were not a cheap boot, and I am at a loss. I don't know if I could trust them to most cobblers, but I love your videos and have seen you save worse boots that were needing more. I use them all the time for preaching at my church, but am not really able to do it much more. Thanks for all the videos. I watch them all!
Shoe restoration: You guys are amazing and thanks for providing such educational videos
Shoe restoration. Thank you for all the great information that helps us keep our shoes in good condition. I have a pair of ebay pebble grain Ferragamo oxfords with vibram soles that
have been badly reglued with glue on the uppers and one toe is flat and stained.
Boy have I got a wicked set of shoes for you guys to do some quality work to. Shoe restoration only touches part of the need for them, but a sole would do better than nothing in my opinion. Love watching the videos and seeing the quality of work you two throw into your lives.
I have an old pair of boots that are in need of shoe restoration. I really like enjoy watching you guys rebuild shoes.
Just now seeing this video! Ya'll did a fantastic job bringing this well used pair of work boots back to life. I no doubt have already missed the deadline for the restoration drawing but you bet I'll be tossing my name into the next pot. I myself have a trusted pair of boots that were involved in a motorcycle accident and had to be retired before their time because of insurance purposes and the laces being cut to get the boots off of me. Keep up the great work gents and thank you for all you quality videos!
Shoe Restoration. Thanks guys. I’m enjoying your channel.
Shoe restoration: really love your work! Gained a new subscriber 💛
Shoe Restoration: My Red Wing 2944 Harvesters. My first real pair of boots that I wore to work as a barista every day for one of the most difficult years of my life. They were worn on unfinished concrete 8-10 hours a day, no shoe trees, and no breaks. I’ve since moved onto driving a long-haul semi and expanded my boot collection, but they are still my favorites. Unfortunately water has started to seep through the sole, the heel is starting to round off from my walk, and the vamp has more wrinkles than my grandma. The loss of weather resistance unfortunately means they’re not quite fit for regular truck duty. They’re no longer sold in the US, and I’m far too attached to let them go. I’ll probably send them off to you guys regardless! Thanks for doing this, y’all rock.
Looking great, the shoe restoration are great too. ;)
Shoe restoration: you guys are my new RUclips obsession! I have a pair of Joseph Aboud boots that I love but have worn the sole much like the one in this video.
