Every individual and organisation on the planet should be avoiding and preventing pollution. ISO 14001 is a way for an organisation to assure customers, suppliers and the public in general that they have, within their organisation, a system of environmental management that meets a certain standard, certified by an independent 3rd party. Are they completely preventing pollution therefore? Almost certainly not, but they are saying that they are trying to improve continuously and that is one of the things that the 3rd party auditor is supposed to check for.
in theory it is a good system, but its often a waste of time, as people are not personally interested in reaching the set goals. its only creating work that noone really cares about
