    We will never ever see the like of Eddy Merckx in cycling again, there are no words in the whole worlds vocabulary to adequately describe this man Eddy Merckx.
    His desire to win, and win in great style is awesome, and even the word awesome isn't adequate.

      In such condition, we would be able to tell who is the extraordinary cyclist among all. Which is impossible to be seen in nowadays competition. Long live Eddy! The greatest cyclist of all time!

    Merckx was even better when the weather was at its worse. he took seven minutes on Fuente on one wet day. he won many one day classics in appalling conditions. Snow, sleet or rain, the worse the weather the better he was. Quite simply the best cyclist there has ever been.

      Fuente lost it not because of weather, but himself. He forgot to ate enough.

    Volgens mij de laatste grote ronde die Eddy Merckx gewonnen heeft. Een heel ander soort wielrennen maar wel met grote toppers.

    30 mph - 46 kph over a VARIABLE COURSE of 25 miles -28 kilometers............. Insane. Any questions?

      @WalrusRiderCycling 5 лет назад +1

      48.47km/h actually... 25 miles is 40km roughly not 28km

      No tri bars, aero lid, disc wheels, skin suit or aero frame. It's an insane speed on a metal frame with toes clips even today.

    Jeez. look at the stairs they have to climb to the podium at the end. almost makes it not worth winning.

      30mph average for 25 miles??? i think ive done 27-28 once, on a steep downhill, pedaling furiously. amazing!

      I used to work in a bike shop and a customre brought in an old steel Cinelli racing bike. It was shockingly light. Of course, no aero shapes on those puppies and significantly less stiffness to maximize power output.

    Fuente seemed to be the only one that could challenge Merckx if it was a race that featured mountain stages.

      Eddy and his team used to tear the legs off the specialist climbers on the flat before the climbs. He did the same to the sprinters on the sprint stages, they'd rip the legs off them so they didn't have anything left for the sprint.
