  • Eleanor King, Family Health and Wellbeing Strategy Lead at Southend YMCA and Bump to Breast Project Manager will explore issues around the social and cultural context of breastfeeding both locally and in the UK, which has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the world.
Four out of five families who are formula feeding in the UK stopped breastfeeding before they wanted to, due to a lack of support. This can lead to a sense of loss and pain, when breastfeeding did not work out. Eleanor will discuss the environmental, cultural and social barriers to breastfeeding as well as the positive enabling factors which help women have a positive and empowering breastfeeding experience. There will also be a chance to consider breastfeeding myths and popular beliefs, which can also impact on a family's experience of breastfeeding.
