I love this idea, Matt. I just finished reading the Voyage of the Dawn Treader to my boys and this nightcap and the dreams definitely reminds me of The Dark Island, where all of your worst nightmares coming true. One of these caps would definitely come in handy!
Some semi-powerful (5th level appox.) Warlock created this item. The whispers and gibbering madness of their patron are tolerable to a steel-minded Warlock while awake, but sleep proves impossible for even the most resolute caster. The Warlock fabricates this item only because they need a respite from the terrible dreams and insane nonsense which plagues them constantly, thanks to their patron. It could be found on the person of a cult member or could be built into a player character's inventory/routine.
When you rolled that trinket and said dragongrim i though it kind of fit as well. I took it a different root tho. I was think that in one of the held cities a young orphan of a once noble house had one thing from when his home was sacked by the Dismember Lords troopers and that was his fathers night cap that his father force over his head and eyes as he shoved him into the secret passage behind the one way mirror. Knowing his fate for not one can run from the wandering eye of the dismembered lord the Bard of Valor's last son was to his son creating the Minor Illusions his son saw that night as his father was lead away. Now for some unknown reason maybe the general magical energy or maybe an echo of a fathers last act of love but the hat gives the wear amazing dreams and stories of far land. Even of a far off crumbled tower turned into an Inn that is ran by a dwarf and elf that are in love. What a fanciful tale. Hope you liked this Matt
