Amusingly, the spell targets the owner of the object - Amy said she needed something of Cordy's. But Xander, not understanding the rules of magic, askerld Cordy to give it back. When she gave it back, it became Xander's again, so the target of the spell became Xander. (Back in "Witch", people were stealing spell ingredients, not asking for them, doh!) Also, one of the aspects of the goddess called upon is The Huntress...
Have to mention the excellent directorial debut by James M. Contner, who works well with small movements. The way Buffy's hair just falls into place as she turns around while looking for Joyce, the bit where Amy slides out from behind Xander to look at him as he suggests the spell, the blocking as first Buffy and then Willow come on to Xander…all very well done. (I'm not so sure about the close up on Giles's shoe as we start that scene with him and Buffy in the Library, but…) Fastpaced (so many great little scenes in Act II alone!) and funny…and yet so poignant. From Xander getting dumped on Valentine's Day to Giles forcibly rejecting Jenny by taking her back to "Ms. Calendar" status to Xander getting his dream (when he thinks Buffy has FINALLY started to realize that he's the One for her) only to have the light go out of his eyes when Amy starts saying the same thing…ouch, ouch, ouch. I may not be literally smacking my heart as you do (hope your ribs are okay lol), but I'm with you in spirit. (The Jenny bit particularly hurts because you can see how awkward it is for the kids…Buffy has her eyes down, trying to ignore it all, Willow looks hurt to see Giles and Jenny not be able to talk and Xander's pissed off and won't even move out of Jenny's way when she tries to get by. Ouch, but it does set up the whole bit when Jenny falls under the spell, which is so hilarious. I particularly like how Xander almost seems to be considering going for it with Jenny for a half-second…I mean they are both single and he did say she was "reasonably doll-some" back in the Frankenstein episode.) This works well to cover for Sarah Michelle Gellar's hosting "Saturday Night Live" during the shooting (which is why Buffy is a rat for half the episode, to give SMG time to go to NY) but it was planned long in advance; early in the season Nicholas Brendon was telling the fan board that Valentine's Day would be big for Xander. Still, there were a lot of rewrites: Marti Noxon says that Joss Whedon rewrote half her script in four days over Thanksgiving weekend. Worked out well, though. And big ups to you for being able to put your Buffy/Angel love aside to cheer Xander on when you thought Buffy was sincerely falling for him. "Say 'yes'! Say 'yes'!" Ha, awesome. Until next time…

Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered was the first of the real comedic episodes of the series. Here we see Xander jilted by Cordelia and looking for a type of revenge. Amy obliges but as always the love spell goes wrong, and we see Xander become irresistible to all women except Cordelia. We see Harmony and her Airhead friends also act as you would expect, however once under the spell want Xander too. Funny when the peaceful Oz punches Xander, and Jenny Calendar and Joyce both hitting on Xander. When Buffy comes in to the library in her sexy outfit it all goes wrong when she thinks she is being two timed and the jealous Amy turns her into a rat, when she comes back to human form a funny ending saying to Xander she remembers coming on to him, and a 'sudden need for cheese'. Strangely Buffy and Cheese are weirdly connected throughout this show!
I assume part of the reason Oz is now going around sucker-punching people (which I don't much like, even if Xander did earn it karmically) is that now that he's a werewolf, he has a certain level of hidden aggression. Too soon to tell, though.
"This is gonna go wrong, horrib!y. Xander;s about to have ANGELUS [fall in love with him]!" Ah, I see you've been reading fanfiction again :D. (There's probably a good dozen such fics out there.) Fantastic episode (one of my Top 5) and loving the reaction. (I stopped to comment about your reaction to the spell. ). Can't wait until you get to where Jenny is enspelled, hehehehe…
This is an extremely well written, directed and acted comedic episode. Cordelia gives into pride and the desire for acceptance, and Xander gives in to jealousy and spite. The resulting spiral out of control is pure Hellmouth, where every bad impulse and consequence gets multiplied many fold. The visual gags are great. Buffy casually opening the "barricaded" library door is my favorite. To give Xander credit(not much, but some) the moment he realizes the implications of what he has done he is horrified, swallows his pride and goes to Giles. And it must be said, the women of this show are all knockouts. Willow being naughty is fire, Jenny is drop dead gorgeous and holy milf, Joyce! Cordy looks stunning in that dark burgundy dress and Amy is just a doll. As far as Buffy in the library...well, Xander is definitely a better man than I was at his age. SMG does "sex kitten" at the Olympic gold medal level. Of course, within the context of the story, a fired up, jealous, and enraged Slayer feeling betrayed is...simply terrifying. I also like the secondary continuing development of the monstrous Angelus, from the "quaint little shopgirl" to "nailed puppy up" to the ominous escalation of trying to murder Xander.
@invadertifxiii Yes I understand, I always try not to say too much. I've seen people on other channels give huge spoilers, full explanations of arcs and mentioned characters that don't show up until seasons later, it's frustrating to see.
This is one of the worst for Xander, but one of the best for Cordelia. He basically blackmails Amy into doing witchcraft to have the girl he wants be with him. Violating their consent on his behalf, that is just awful! Xander is already my least favorite, and this episode doesn't do him any favors.

Tbh had he died this episode it wouldn’t have hurt my feelings. The fact that I’m sympathetic to a savage killer like Spike because of Angelus and Dru’s shit and snide behavior is something I didn’t expect to happen. Lol
