My two cents: I've never bought a dog or cat. They just show up and I decide whether to keep them or not. I've never bought pet insurance. I follow a bi-weekly sinking fund of just $20 which will cover her annual vaccines, tag, registration and Bravecto. I don't take her to get teeth cleaned and she's fine. My last dog lived to 16 and never knew what a toothbrush was. I don't buy her clothes. She has a harness and a regular leash for walks. I buy her a new bed twice a year. I don't buy her super fancy food but I don't give her the super cheap kind either. Luckily she hardly ever gets sick but if she had an emergency, I have my ER fully funded.

Im a shelter volunteer. Alot of first time adoptees coming in have no idea that pets actually cost money. My questions for them are always: what are you doing for at least the next 10 years of your life? And do you have at least 1200 dollars a years for pet expenses.

I had no clue what I was doing when I got my first dog but we figured it out. We don't spend a lot of money because we spend time and energy instead. We do all the walking, training and grooming. We take them with us to an Airbnb instead of going abroad much. The biggest expense is the pet insurance. I buy as close to unlimited cover as I can get. We could soak the cost of a surgery but I'm more worried about a chronic illness because monthly medications can cost a lot of money over their lifetime.

We just spent $3000 over 6 months because my dog has been having horrible skin infections. We finally determined it was incurable cancer. Treatment was another $5,000, and would only slightly extend his life, so I opted out. Emotionally I really wanted to do it, but I also wasn't confident that chemo would improve the quality of his end of life.

He has allergies which require him to have special food, monthly allergy shots and special treats. I do have pet insurance for potentially catastrophic cost. Great video. I budget $1800 per dog per year for my 3 dogs ($450 per month), that is soup to nuts for everything from vet visits, meds, food, toys, grooming (although I do it at home), but I also do have one senior dog that is on prescription food. So I think the math is pretty spot on. I use a sinking fund since costs come sporadically.

I have 1 cat. I spend $200 a month on cat food and litter, so $2400 per year. Vet bills without vet insurance, I pay about $1000 to $2000 a year. Flea prevention is about $20 per month or $240 per year. Cat toys, $50 to $100 per year. Treats = $300 per year. So plan on about over $5K per year for 1 cat! I used to have 4 cats! I'm a 1 cat person now because it is expensive. I still think pet insurance is a racket so the vets can charge more, so I'm not getting it at the moment. I self-insure by making sure I have enough savings. No credit cards! Paying for vet care on a credit card is a sure way to sink you financially.

They can be wonderful companions, but don't push their lives past reasonable expectations. Do not pay $20k, $30k, or more just to make you feel better about saving your pet. You are their guardian. I have a senior golden retriever that beat cancer last year and we are now managing chronic kidney failure and arthritis. The cancer treatment alone cost $12,000 at BluePearl. Managing kidney failure requires a special diet that's $300 every 45 days; and the Librela shot to manage her arthritis is about $90. I would submit that caring for a senior dog outweighs startup costs.

Well, you will start off on the right foot if you adopt instead of shop. Adopting not only saves the animals life, but also is much cheaper. Plus, if you get one from the humane society or another animal shelter, they are usually already spayed or neutered and already have most of their shots. So, you save tons of money upfront getting them from a shelter or even a friend that has a cat that went out got pregnant. LOL That's how I got my cat. But they still can be costly when it comes to medical bills that come up as they get older. Start saving $20 a month when you get your pet, and by the time something comes up, you can cover it.

I have spent over $100k in my 20 years of adulthood. The bigger the dog or pet the bigger the expenses all around. If they have allergies, that’s a monthly vet visit, monthly medications, special food that costs more. Toys, treats, daycare, training for bad behaviors. Over night or long term hotels for pets. Damage to the house and your things. If they bite the neighbor more expenses. Happened to my neighbors. I love animals I do but if I could do it over I would not have pets. That’s $100k lost that could have gone to retirement or investing. Medical bills due to ER visits. Both dogs almost died and had to have ER surgeries due to 1. Catching a common bacterial infection and 2. A benign tumor growing on the spleen causing interns bleeding. I love my pets but I am done with ownership after they pass.

Please, consider pet insurance to cover emergency injuries and long term illnesses. Get it early, before pre-existing conditions develop. One emergency could easily cost upwards of 10k. A dog with allergies or one that develops heart failure or cancer will easily cost that and more in a lifetime. Unless you have a pet fund of 10-20k saved, pet insurance is VERY worth it. For so many owners, it is the difference between saving their pet or having to make a difficult decision. I am a vet, and I have my own pets insured, and it definitely has been well worth it.

Money doesn't just work out with kids either. If it did, people would have better savings and retirement funds. I disagree about front end costs being most expensive. My dog hit 8 years old and started having a few issues that require meds. We are now at 450 a month for her. I have a large flex in my budget so it's ok but I know a lot of people don't have that. I've always had a sinking fund for her since day one thank goodness

Sadly, $1500 / yr. for a pet doesn't always cut it. Our average cost over 13 years per pet - that total is more between $5K and 7.5K. Main reason? Pet insurance.. as now a visit to the vet for a long term treatment, or specialized tests, therapies, and other visits - are rapidly approaching what used to be "people" medical rates. A friend took in their fur baby for torn meniscus repair.. over $4K - out of pocket! We had to take our fur baby to a CAT scan of some type - our vet thought maybe there was damage to the back - that would've cost us close to $7K.. thank goodness for pet insurance!
All this to say.. people need to be prepared.. and if you can't set aside enough for at least 2 major pet visits per year.. you may have to go the pet insurance route like we did.. so.. another budget line item.. so much for just "winging it" whether you will be able to pay..
Last, our state passed a law that stated that the owner of a "neglected" animal.. could be fined and jailed for up to 3 years if convicted. And we know of someone that happened to - making pets an even more risk prone proposition. Having said that.. I still want to own more.. but my eyes are wide open now..

Hello! Budget? Why aren't those pets a budget item?
And no, we don't take the pets to the groomer. They go to the vet, generally once a year. We take care of the rest. Treats come out of the food budget, along with the food. One eats wet as the main food, including ground turkey. The other prefers dry, but has to eat a little wet.
We have an emergency fund for both cats. Male cats are easy to neuter, but they get UTIs more easily. And *that* is a problem for some breeds, as the urinary tract of certain breeds blocks urine escape. And it's not cheap to fix.

This is so foreign to me. We used to have a dog, my mum rescued one of the crossed breed puppies someone brought to her work. We got it for free. He only went to a vet once, he was 14. Vet said he was losing sight but was in exeptionally good health. We would groom him at home and my mum always fed him the same super cheap food she cooked: cheapest meat, usually Ofall, carrots, buckwheat or whatever sort of groats we had on hand. If you have too much money share it with hungry people, don't spend it on dog's clothes that your dog hates anyway.

If you have kids and pets, you are probably living outside your means, as most folk can't afford vets when they really need them so....
But also people raise families on less than $60k or $50k, so there is that. So, know what you are getting into is all, as they do sell pet insurance.
inb4 "you are horrible", no most people buy animals they can't afford. If you can't afford a kid you probably can't afford an animal. but hey, what do I know. People buy crap they can't afford all the time. why is this different?

Pets are just the stupidest thing. In addition to the money you spend on them, they devalue your house and car. Dogs are loud and create conflicts amongst neighbors with their excessive barking. When they're out of town people pawn them off on friends/family. I've had countless fun nights cut short because somebody had to leave early to feed their cat/dog. I've had relationships tank because of allergies. Waking up in the middle of the night or having to cut out of work during the day to care to them. Just a nuisance.
