A Day in the Life of an Architect: Construction Site Visit

- Join me for a construction site visit as the Island Outpost project enters rough framing, the point where the initial sketch of an idea is finally rendered in physical form. For an architect, it's probably the most exciting phase and it's taken us many months to get here. Site and foundation work are time consuming and embody a lot of effort, but progress is often slow and much of the work is hidden in the finished project. By contrast, framing moves quickly and there's much to coordinate between the trades: plumbers, electricians and mechanical subs.

The culture of HGTV has tricked us all into believing that construction happens in the space of a 30-minute show segment. But custom design + construction takes time to complete. And, custom construction on an island takes much longer (I'm learning). That's because building on an island is subject to an entirely different set of rules. All things being equal, given the choice between plentiful, profitable work on the mainland and work on an island, most contractors have been choosing the work that's easier to access and execute. That's not something I had fully anticipated at the outset of construction and it's proving a difficult problem to solve. The building boom here in Maine has caused a significant labor shortage and that's hindered our ability to secure subcontractors willing to make the journey out to our remote site.
There are no hardware stores, or places to run to if you need an extra bag of concrete. Everything we build with comes from off-island and thus, bringing the necessary materials to the island requires a special weather window and, if it's a load delivered by barge, the right set of tides to land and leave the beach. Winter wind and heavy seas have conspired against us more than a few times too.
The work continues though and I'm thankful for the dedicated crew acting as my hands in the field to realize these ideas in spite of the wind and weather. So too, for generous, supportive clients - dear friends by now - who patiently watch as their home takes shape. To navigate these opposing forces and turn them to your advantage takes skill, hard work and the work of many. And, perhaps that's the reason the creative satisfaction in the end is so great.
My sincere thanks for watching and following along. It really is as much fun as it looks!

What's the timeline difference between when we see the progress as opposed to real time progress?
edit: I fall in love with architecture as every minute of your videos go by. Keep up the inspirational work.
Hi there! I need some help with my atchitecture project, is there any way i can contact you for a little sketch ( I am not very happy with my current idea )
This can go straight onto Netflix!
Priceless
Cheers my friend, thank you!
Yes!
That would be great!
true
Really love this and the floor plan design were great. I really love it. Who is with me?
Cheers...appreciate that!
@@30by40 Hopefully you will reply to ; can you recommend any textbook 📗 architectural design
I would make the master bed the living space but thats me.
Place looks great and the lot doesnt get much better.
@@tmulltuous you can also add your own design concept or what do you think?
The framed landscape from the main bedroom is just amazing Eric! If it wasn’t for the weather I would just receive the house as it is right now haha.
The cool thing about these videos is that it shows how time demanding any construction project can be. Cant wait to see the windows come in! Cheers
Cheers, my friend...! You can send some of that warm air up this way please...we're overdue.
Hi, I love your work, I am 17 years old and have always wanted to be an architect, but you and your videos have really made me appreciate it more and given me a bigger view ower what life as an architect really is. In addition, you have made me perform better in school so that I one day can enter an architectural school. Keep it up!
You can do it! Stick with it and be introspective. I was in your shoes not too long ago and looking back, I am glad I had the drive and passion - many of my peers didn’t, and it shows. In the same breath, don’t push yourself into something if it feels wrong. I also thought at your age that I needed to decide whether I wanted to do residential or commercial. Not only is this wrong (you don’t need to decide one way or another), but it’s not so binary either - there are a million career applications with architecture. You learn about people & places, how humans interact with the earth, psychology, cost analysis, engineering, and so much more. I always tell people architecture is one of the few educational paths with a truly unlimited amount of doors.
Oh man, that's beautiful. I love the windows taking advantage of that view! I know nothing about architecture but from the outside looking in - well done.
Cheers mate...hard to spoil that view with much of anything.
I'm happy to see the use of engineered lumber. Not just because it's a good use of resources but more importantly, it's a better, straighter and more stable product.
Also, I enjoy watching someone else's workflow process.
Cheers...good eye! We're using LSLs at the baths only on this one as they make for really straight walls and happy tilesetters.
SIR you are a true inspiration for us. I am an architect from INDIA and working as an architect in an office and also doing full projects (only selected ). I watched all your videos since when i was a student of architecture and truly you inspire me with every video of yours. Keep rising sir and keep inspiring fresh architects like us. Love and respect from India.
Videos like these make me so excited for my future as an architect!
As a first year student it still amazes me getting to see the structure behind buildings as they’re being constructed even in ones I’ve been in a million times before like my childhood home.
"I believe that the real core of all architectural work lies in the act of construction." - Peter Zumthor
Cheers to you, Eric, and the whole team for this project.
First off, great project so far. Secondly, thanks for taking us along. This is a wonderful opportunity to see into your world, the world of the architect. Well done, sir.
What a great architect! What really inspires me the most about you is your practicality. Unlike architecture school talks, you present the reality of what a good architect is and does out there in the field. Thank you
Thanks for taking us along the site visit, loved every minute of it 😀

Your builder is writing notes?? Oh my! I have to sit down for this.
👍👍 for talking about the importance of understanding the construction process for architects! And great to learn about the all the islands off of Maine and the logistical challenges arising from that!
As a Design Student focusing majoring in Graphic Design but also external multi-use urban spaces and interior spaces, these videos are a great inspiration when I feel stuck on pieces of work. The way that you capture your projects with the amount of attention to detail, almost dispersions yourself from a pure architectural mindset and more into a fluid stage where you capture the project within a different light and approach through its simplicity of angles. It's fascinating I think.
For the last week and a half, I've been trying to overcome this barrier I've put myself in, where I have been caught with one mindset and idea for an internal space, limiting my creativity and overall ability to have a better resolution. Which my tutor has noticed and is pushing me to overcome. I just have no idea how to. So I'm going to go and photograph nature on a hike, looking at how layers and tones of trees break up an image hoping I get some alternative ideas from this. So thank you as your approach has made me step back and think about how I should overcome this project proposal I have to complete.
Greatest mud room view of all time
I usually don’t post these comment but you have made such a huge impact on how I see architecture (before university and currently during). You genuinely look like you are doing what you love and loving every minute of that and it is so clear with the work you produce and your process. A big thank you for these videos from a second year architecture student aspiring to be like you.
That POV shot as you walked into the structure really emphasised the stunning views and demonstrates how the early analysis and design work pay dividends! Going to be a very special space upon completion I think.
Man you’re really helpful man discovered this Chanel about 3 yrs ago and I’m still consuming this helpful knowledge thanks .
Thank you so much for everything you DO! You’ve been my best teacher for many years!
It's incredibly satisfying to see something you built brick by stick in your mind a thousand times... coming together into reality. Love your analogy of the workers being the hands of your mind.
coming up as a student i have really struggled to grasp a hold of what i want from this profession. your videos have guided me all the way. Its a pleasure and a privilege to see your work progress. thanks for everything. Love you man
I'm an Architectural Designer, bless the Architects that understand the trade well, the details that make sense makes our life easier.
It must be so fulfilling to see something you've designed being built!
Oh what a top notch architectural RUclips site...
i'm architecture graduated, i watch again all of your videos, they really me motivate me
thank you for sharing your process as architect
Congratulations from Brazil, your amazing job since the client interview by now is a high level of professional performance, the history register through your documentary including photos and the whole progress of this project is really fantastic. It's a master class for me an Architectury Studant on dregree with 50 years old.
Thanks for the update on the Outpost project! Watched the whole playlist on it from the start! Looking forward to seeing more progress of this build!
I love this channel, I’m a project engineer for a material handling company and really wish there were more channels like this showing projects from start to finish
I really appreciate the site's work and the people behind it! Thank you, Arch. Eric! for this awesome content! The architect's responsibility does not really end in blueprints, it is how the Architect makes his vision into reality. Construction is a very important process of building and as part of designing. This is such an inspiring construction site story for me, on how architects put real effort and hard work into their job. Thank you!
I appreciate you so much for just being the person we can wind down to on here!
Great to follow along and see this project come to life. Looking forward to seeing more!
A great reminder that architecture is a one step at a time journey. It's another reminder that no design is truly understood unless you are involved in the physical building process. Thanks again, Eric!
as a building designer, I always wait for your next videos, the view from the window is just incredible, and the foundation is brilliantly done. Congrats Eric.
I would live there any day! Can't even wait to see the finished product!
Fantastic to see the spaces coming together with framing going up!
This is one of those "Once in a lifetime" kind of Site.. Amazing..!! 😍
So awesome to see things starting to take shape Eric! Thanks for taking us on this journey with you!🤘
I spent all day with your videos playing while I designed and now you upload. Love it!
This brought back memories when I had a project on Mackinaw Island in Michigan and I had to ferry myself & my Jeep onto the island. This is dope!!!!
Thanks for documenting and sharing your amazing project.
I was patiently waiting for one of these updates and I really enjoyed it. Great work as always! Cheers, Tim
The view from the master bedroom is breathtaking ,well done
I love this type of videos, it allows me to have an idea on a very different construction sites than what I usually had to visit.
by the way your description is so nicely put. I really appreciate the effort you make in your videos!
Man the level of details and work. Damn
Its always fascinating to see your design that you put ideas and effort being built
Thanks for all your videos. They are a true source of inspiration. Keep up the fantastic work.
Just amazed how things are getting built in such a beautiful remote location,WOW!!! Those Ocean views 😳👍
I really enjoy your content..it's inspiring and such a great work!
I work in a german architecture office and also lived for half a year in Canada..in this time I felt so greatful for all the time in nature and the beauty of this country. I'd like to built projects like these!
Always love your videos - it demystifies architecture.
Hey 30x40 I’m 14 and from Australia just wanted to say these videos are inspiring me to become an architect! Love the videos and your workstation is amazing, love the monochrome colour choice and how each peice of furniture complements each other through the simple desgin!
It was an amazing journey thank you a lot for sharing with us
I love ur videos so much, I'm a senior in high school, and in the fall I will be studying architecture. thank you for making amazing videos :)
Quality framing. Can't wait to see the final product.
Really love your word cannot get enough of it
That location is crazy beautiful! Funny how it looks like it could be in Norway (which makes it more relatable for me at least). I have no ambitions on becoming an architect, but we're planning to build a house and it's really helpful seeing your videos.
The space is just spectacular. It’s truly well done. Also, I love the use of Zip sheathing and the advantech subfloor. Next level quality for air and water resistance. Keep up the good work.
allways amazing to see something from imagination to realization! ... i love that about being an architect.
can't wait to see your result
Thanks again for another superb video Eric
Yes!! Finally you posted love you!
I'm used to seeing concrete buildings but I find wood framing interesting!
Its the best. When I am finally a licensed architect I'm gonna start looking for an architecture firm that specializes itself in timber use
Doesnt it usually last less structurally? I'm afraid of wood rotting and losing it's strenght over time vs concrete. Well that and termites, humidty, fire hazards, etc...
@@RealDavoX if it is done correctly you shouldnt have those problems. And its much better for the Enviroment.
@@RealDavoX nope! plenty of century old buildings with timber. wood rotting is a problem when the construction itself stays humid, so that's something to look out for. and to of course look into wood treatment to have it preserve longer.
concrete degrades /rots too.
ITS NICE TO HAVE THE WOOD FRAMING BECAUSE ITS SIDE OF A SALTY WATER
Really love this...
Thank you so much. Architecture so exiciting for me with your information
amazing work! It sure is a challenge to build in such a remote area... always feels great to see ideas coming to life... CONGRATS!!!!
Great illustration of a site visit. Later on, show an example of solving a field condition- the inevitable point where the contractor raises a question and four people stand around drinking coffee and saying “Huh! How did that happen? Now what?”
Thank u for all the work that share... "saludos desde Ecuador"
I love this job
This is a great series, thanks for sharing your workflow on a real project!
Great video of showing us your way of thinking resulting in built structures, I love it! This clearly has documentary level.
Can you make a video about your journey from study at university to where you are right now (As an independent architect)?
I love the site visit videos! Id love to see more content involving the construction!
Thank you!! Perfect place for home you have there!
Well done, Eric. These insights into what goes on in our heads during site visits are what many more (if not all) architects & designers should be producing. The Instagram one-shot of "framing day!" just isn't enough to let potential clients know how we work and how we understand and deliver the design & construction process. Excited to see this house progress! 👍🙏
What a amazing site
Always a great day when a 30 by 40 Design Workshop video is released.
Great video, would love to see the site report process and how use this to inform future projects.
Keep up the great work 🤘🏻
One like is not enough. I really liked this video, it reminds me of my first project at faculty 15 years ago. They had us design a house in a similar site.
I am really admire you works
Such a fantastic insight love this video Eric can't wait to see more!
Incredible Views, great project!!!
You do great work and I know you will do greater; the future is yours. Keep on designing!
Excellent Job, my dream to start on my own, and you always inspired me. I am an Architect in New Jersey, and setting my goal to begin on my own
Beautiful and very interesting "eye-opener" on the topic. Absolutely love new the style of the vids too. Much luck on the build from France!
Appreciable work.. love your work
Soo awesome. Thank you.
lovely piece of work, congratulations. In my side most of buildings are most of the buildings are made of brick and the wood is actually a roof truss and usually nothing else. So I watch your films with great joy, I show them sometimes during my trainings to make people aware of various aspects and also to make people interested in the subject, although we design in BIM technology in archicad :) but this is a detail.
Great video. Thanks for the insight into your site visits
I was waiting for that video 😍😍
Amazing video, I have really enjoyed the process.
On the west coast sourcing materials is not easy anymore ,a distinct lack of quantity on hand .You are a rock star
As a front-end developer, I use your insights on my own projects. The correlation is there and it helps me to ask questions differently. Different type of site, but it does require to put in a lot of communication with the designer (architect).
We need more of this Eric, good luck man! \m/
Very inspiring, thank you very much for sharing!
Going Vertical and getting a feel for the defined spaces is a big step. Taking your vision to a third dimension, how did the client react? Very nice.
It's soo cool the process that have a project, is not just make blueprints.
Inspiring! Thank you.
Love it !
ANOTHER great vid
