Just played in a 150K Calcutta scramble in Nebraska. 26 K to the winner. NO ONE would even think of calling a stupid rule like that out unless you wanted your ass kicked. Nobody has ever enforced this rule .. you can find videos of even GM golf doing scrambles with pros and you’ll hear something along the lines of “we’re in for par but [fill in a name] is up for our birdie putt”. And whoever is in this comment section I GUARANTEE has done the same

It is a rule, when I was a kid I violated it by tapping in the missed putt and the other team gave me a warning as it was my first scramble and I was 10-11ish years old and ever since then I have never forgotten it and I always give a warning when I see it happen and anytime after that I would call it on them but it has never come down to that as of yet

I am a scratch golfer, play a lot of scrambles and it is 100% a rule of the game, I love you Dave but you are wrong. That being said not every scramble enforces this as it slows down play. To be honest I think it should be reviewed as it will speed up time on the greens.
Portnoy said himself towards the end of the video, he’s not disputing the rule but I’ve also played 100+ scrambles and I’ve never seen that rule enforced once. It’s super petty to enforce it when it was a tap in and another player still has an opportunity to putt. Unless this is the Ryder Cup (it’s not), it’s unnecessary negative energy to enforce something that doesn’t give that team an advantage. If you’re going to violate a rule that actually gives you an advantage, then you have every right to enforce it. No reasonable person in a charity type event enforces this
I live in Thailand now and Australians and people from the UK enforce this rule but the US guys don't like it, I think its a cultural thing.@@KemperFi13

Now if the putt was 5-6 feet out and gave somebody the advantage of seeing the line, different story. But on a tap in??? Kirk is dirty for trying to enforce that one

Everyone mad at Kirk is only mildly justifiable. A rule is a rule. Getting mad at someone wanting to enforce a rule for a 30k tournament, is like getting mad at referees enforcing rules in any game.
Clearly it’s a stupid rule, but it is a rule. The rule exists because sinking the putt for 5 would take off some of the pressure on the prior putt, giving the team a small mental advantage.
Yeah, it would not be fun playing with Kirk if he’s like this in pickup games. But in competition, you should know the rules.

I remember one comp I played, I got called out on a Par 5, hitting my 2nd on the green out of turn to help speed up play. Whilst waiting nearly 25mins for the rest of the group to find their lost tee shots, redrops, fatted 2nd shots, pressure from groups behind waiting.
I told the opposition your gonna need to pay for a new Scottie Cam once I've wrapped it around your head. Did the trick.

You play a scramble in Oklahoma, if you’re putting for birdie you come up short and then proceed to knock your out in before your team mates put it’s a par period. If you miss just mark it or pick it up. Wtf are you even arguing about.

I love how Dave hits it on the head, “are they that much better than you?” Which is really the crux of it. Guy knew he couldn’t win legitimately so he’s going to try some technicality bullshit on a rule that’s never enforced because it drastically slows down pace of play on a scramble.

I have caddied so many times for so many scrambles and there’s just some things that aren’t that serious and this ain’t the PGA. I have never seen this ever been enforced ever by anyone, probably because it’s ridiculous. Knocking in the putt changes nothing about the up coming putt because it’s either u saying it’s good then picking it up or knock it in or whatever. And for that caddie to be getting so up in the players faces and so heated and keep arguing with them about the rule is ridiculous and idk how he found himself there with work ethic like that. If anyone ever finds me doing the same and calling my friends out for knocking in a gimme in a scramble, please put me out my misery😂 🙏
Yeah, this happened to me in a scramble match. Chipped on and tapped in a put for 4, then my partner chipped in for a 3.

The rules of golf do not cover scrambles. There is no right or wrong answer. It would be a local rule specified for the tournament.

I scramble every week and it’s played that way. If the partner makes the shot it’s a 4 not a 5. They each get a shot. I don’t think USGA covers scrambles
