- The Tuba Herd takes you behind the scenes of an AUMB pregame show. (Recorded at the 2008 Auburn vs. Tennessee game) The camera was mounted between the lead pipes of the sousaphone. We apologize for the camera angle, but it was the only way to disguise the camera. Hang on for the ride!
A full view of an AUMB pregame show can be seen here: • Auburn University Marc...

we have 11 sousaphones in our highschool marching band (look up the james f byrne rebel regiment :D !)
@Kinjid Just try the way I have described and see if a "bucket" will fit. I suspect it will as it leaves ample room above the head to hear even the tallest of plumes. I've played on nearly every make of sousaphone and this original way of wearing the sousaphone provides both the optimal viewing, as well as the best fit for any uniform. You'll also notice that the side to side spacing between sousaphone can be closer as the bodies won't be hitting each other as much.
@Kinjid Perhaps you should read any book that describes Sousa and his instrument - JW Pepper, the original manufacturer of the sousaphone, modified their largest jumbo HELICON with a movable upright bell, as Sousa preferred the sound to "diffuse" over the band. Furthermore, as I suspect these are Conn 20Ks, read any old Conn catalog and you'll notice that they wear them a certain way - the way these AUMB sousaphone players should be wearing them.
War Eagle!!!!!!!!!''
lol major spinning... i look away and my room is spinning more than the tuba was
@Mithosphere The tuba doesn't wear buckets, it simply doesn't fit (For the reason in the last post)... Tuba can wear Barret's or they may opt out and instead wear no hats at all
@backoffshesmine12 dude, this show is not boring. Far from it. You are the only person I know to say that. Even Alabama fans, Auburns biggest rival in case you didn't know, say this is the best pregame show they have ever seen. The only one I could compare to it is Ohio St. But it doesnt have the wow factor that this one possesses.
This is freakin awesime im a tuba player and i love it. Yall should do a tuba sectional pov like what yall do in down time and just practices
We got 18 tubas in my high-school this year and 22 my sophomore year, and were play at the UT vs. Buffalo game this year. I go to Dobyns-Bennett hs, in Kingsport
Awesome!
Respect! Glory glory to the tubas. AUTUBA!!!!
Wow i wish more people would do this, a POV for the marchers
@MrFhorn2010 So this is what it has come to? I'm the idiot, despite the fact that I've researched and written about the sousaphone? Have you even tried my suggestion? I guess I'll have to post a video ...
@Mithosphere The proper position is not perpendicular, but instead parallel, would you rather have your bell like + or = ? 1 line being you and the other the bell?
The SOUSAPHONE (Which isn't a helicon, and whos bits(with the way they are wearing them in the video) do come in from the left) is engineered to play infront off you, not off to the side. Learn to wear and play a sousaphone before talking please.
lol!
you must give these guy's credit. i am currently (attempting to) learning the sousaphone on my own, but... IMPOSSIBLE. not to mention that sucker is heavy and almost bigger than me.
How come you all don't wear hats like the rest of the band? Is it because of 'tradition' or is it because you can't fit the hat and your head under the bell? If it's the latter, you should seriously consider moving the bell to the proper position which is nearly perpendicular to the body. This will bring the neck and bits coming in from the left as opposed to the right. It's how the sousaphone - a glorified helicon - was engineered to play. Look at old photos from the 1900s.
@Mithosphere LSU's Golden Band from Tigerland wears shakos (buckets) with their tuba in the same position that you see in the video here. However, plumes would just look ridiculous. Why does it even matter how they wear their tubas or what headgear they wear with it? I'm more concerned about how boring this pregame show is in general.
isnt that a good view of the sky
