  • thenarrowpath.com | In this talk, Steve Gregg explores the concept of the new covenant in Hebrews chapter eight. He contrasts the old covenant, which was written on stone and based on laws, with the new covenant, which promises a new heart and spiritual communion with God. Gregg also examines the symbolism behind the tabernacle and argues that it portrays how man approaches God. Ultimately, Gregg highlights the better promises and better covenant of the new covenant compared to the old. TRANSCRIPT: opentheo.org/i...
    Hebrews 8
    New King James Version
    The New Priestly Service
8 Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, 2 a Minister of the [a]sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man.
3 For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is necessary that this One also have something to offer. 4 For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law; 5 who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” 6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.
    A New Covenant
7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. 8 Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah- 9 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 11 None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins [b]and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
13 In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

The old covenant was contract between God and Israel. A conditional contract. The Mosaic law was temporary. The law was not nailed to the cross. It faded away. The legal debt owed by every sinner was nailed to the cross. Because the debt was nailed to the cross believers are to never allow a mongrel dog to judge them in regard to food drink or a yearly festival or a monthly new moon celebration or a weekly sabbath day. A covenant becomes obsolete when one or two of the parties fail to fulfill their side of the agreement. The Israelites failed their agreement when they worshipped the golden calf, and God could not fulfill His conditional promises(“I regarded them not” or “I turned away from them” declares the Lord Heb 8:9) for the people which therefore immediately rendered the covenant obsolete. What was not immediately rendered obsolete were the ceremonial laws that pointed to the arrival of the Redeemer, these became obsolete at the cross.
Paul in Hebrews 8:13 was saying that Jeremiah was confirming that the old covenant IS obsolete, and WILL become obsolete.
The conditions of both the old and new covenants are the same, Exodus 20:4 “and showing mercy unto thousands of them that LOVE ME, AND KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS”
John 14:15 “ IF YOU LOVE ME, KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS”

And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. [15] Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. [16] So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, [17] which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.
Why do you want to live in bondage?
      ‭Galatians 4:21-31 NKJV‬
[21] Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear the law? [22] For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman. [23] But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise, [24] which things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar- [25] for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children- [26] but the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all. [27] For it is written: “Rejoice, O barren, You who do not bear! Break forth and shout, You who are not in labor! For the desolate has many more children Than she who has a husband.” [28] Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise. [29] But, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now. [30] Nevertheless what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.” [31] So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free.

The verses from Jeremiah (Jer. 31:31-34), quoted in Hebrews Chapter 8, represent a prophesy for the houses of Israel and Judah; a prophesy that was not fulfilled in the first century or in the twenty-first. It is speaking of the End of Days, for no one can say all of Israel, much less all nations, "from the least of them to the greatest," know God and have his law written on their hearts. Incidentally, the Hebrew word translated "law" in verse 33 is torah, not nomos, the more generic word for law used in Hebrews (see Strong's Concordance). According to the prophecy, therefore, the Law is part of the new covenant, and has not been replaced by Grace or anything else. Grace is an attribute of God, like Love and Truth; like Mercy. Being of God, it is infinite and eternal. In fact, the offering of a new covenant by God was itself an act of Divine Grace. It was not something God was compelled to do to rectify a fault, as in Hebrews, for the Lord God does not make mistakes, nor does he create faulty covenants. It was something he did out of love for his wayward children, even though they, by breaking his covenant, did not show the same love to him. If that is not Grace, then I do no know the meaning of the word.

For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled." Matthew 5:17-18 When I last checked heaven and earth had not yet passed away. There is much in the OT prophesies still waiting to be fulfilled so ALL is not fulfilled.
The writer of Hebrews certainly didn't think the former covenant had passed away .. "Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away." Hebrews 8:13 it may have been ready but since Hebrews was written many years after Jesus Death and Resurrection it still hadn't. It was still 'becoming' .

The Old Covenant was done away with when Christ died, it is done away with because one Party died, similar to marriage, if one spouse dies then the marriage is over, however The Laws and Commandments are not done away with since they are brought over into a New Covenant, so if a man is married to a woman and the man says no adultery, then the wife dies and the man remarries another woman then the man also says no adultery, he is bringing over the same Laws and Commandments into the new marriage covenant, this is the simplicity of what is happening, and is simply the understanding, this is why we see The Disciples still being obedient to The Laws and Commandments even after Christ rose and left the Earth.

    It's an Excellent message!
Gets to the very HEART of the CONTRADISTINCTION between the Old Law-Covenant Contract (and its Symbiotic Priesthood, Temple & Sacrificial System)
    vs.
The RADICAL NEWNESS & GLORIOUS GRANDEUR of the "BETTER" & "New Covenant," "Priesthood," "Temple," "Sacrifice," and MEANS OF DRAWING NEAR TO GOD!!!

@michaelbrutsche75 It was always faulty! The Law is not of faith.
The Promise to Abraham, established 430 before the Law, and fulfilled in Christ, is apprehended by FAITH.
The Law was a burdensome & temporary "schoolmaster" (etc.) with a "fading glory" that was called "the ministry of death" & "condemnation." The Law makes no one righteous -- it made sin more sinful, and it legally/judiciously brought sin into account!

His unconditional promise was to Abraham, 430 years BEFORE the Law.
His conditional promises were contained in the Old Covenant Law.
In fact, the Mosaic Covenant is the ONLY conditional Covenant.
All others are Promises of God.
The GRACIOUS PURPOSE of the Old Covenant was to point people to Christ as it's fulfillment -- from SHADOW TO SUBSTANCE -- from PICTURE to REALITY.

Couple things to consider Steve, some of which you may know and understand already.
Judaism was not the religion of the Old Testament, it was the Temple system of worship. Judaism has its roots in the exile in Babylon and didn’t full come about until after AD70.
Also, not all Israelites were “Jews”. From my understanding, the 3 remaining southern tribes that remained in Jerusalem were called “Jews”. Furthermore, the title “Jew” originated from the tribe of Judah.
Just like all people from California are Americans, but not all Americans are from California.
I believe it is important to make this distinction, because this distinction was made by Jesus and the Apostles.

Preacher in romans is the greek verb kērussō; to herald (as a public crier) especially divine truth (the gospel): - preach (-er) proclaim publish.,
not necessarily a seminary graduate. Everyone in Christ should be a herald of the divine truths of the gospel of God in word action and deed.Matthew 22:9 KJVS
Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.
In Christ, we are to "preach" that the lost may see the light of the gospel of Christ that those who will believe may be saved..2 Corinthians 4:4-6
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. [5] For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. [6] For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
      Matthew 28:18-20 KJVS
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. [19] Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [20] Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Fair question...
This is a simple matter of understanding context for idiomatic references and figurative devices.
Like Steve referred to, this has to do with the Levitical Order, and the notion of closeness to God via hierarchy. It is a hyperbolic statement of condition vis-à-vis native role, etc.
This does not exclude hierarchy, leadership, and authority amongst fellow followers of Jesus today with regard to roles in life... age, sex, knowledge, vocation, etc.
      I hope that helped!

      - There was the Noahic Covenant, the Abrahamic Covenant, the Sinaitic Covenant (often referred to as the Old Covenant) and the New Covenant.
      - Romans 9:4 refers to the covenantS.
      - Galatians 4:24 specifically cites two covenants (Sinaitic/Old and New): For these are [g]the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar- 25 for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children- 26 but the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all.
Hebrews repeatedly speaks of the Old Covenant being replaced by the New Covenant:
      - Hebrews 7:22 by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.
      - Hebrews 8:6-13 6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.
      - Hebrews 9:1 Then indeed, even the first covenant had ordinances of divine service and the earthly sanctuary.
      - Hebrews 9:15-21 15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
      The Mediator’s Death Necessary
16 For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives. 18 Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood. 19 For when Moses had spoken every [g]precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, “This is the blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.” 21 Then likewise he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. 22 And according to the law almost all things are [h]purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no [i]remission.
      - Hebrews 10:28-30 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” [a]says the Lord. And again, “The Lord will judge His people.”
      - Hebrews 12:24 to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.
      ~ Jason

For when the priesthood is changed the law is necessarily changed.” Jesus is the better high priest who established a new and better covenant based upon better promises, and necessarily established a new and better law, the law of Christ
