    Momentum as an investing strategy suggests that well-performing investments tend to continue their success while under-performers struggle. This might sound counterintuitive but historical data shows that a momentum portfolio does better than a market-cap or a value-style fund over many years. Notably, the Nifty 200 Momentum 30 and Nifty Midcap 150 Momentum 50 indices have delivered impressive returns, often surpassing broader market indices. Further, we look at several instruments including momentum index funds, ETFs, momentum smallcases and also actively managed momentum-based mutual funds. And in the last section of the video, I looked at various momentum strategies ranging from price momentum, 52-week high momentum, dual momentum etc.

    Shankar, I am a follower of you from long time. One of your old video you mentioned about momentum funds and you mentioned about lumpsum investment on it. So I invested lumpsum in one of the nifty 200 momentum 30 fund on oct23, 2023 now till today it given 35.16% return on my investment. Before this fund I am a big fan of nifty next50 where I used to get around 17% return. Thank you for educating me on momentum funds otherwise I never came to know about it. I used to buy multiyear breakout stocks with good volume but now I am not doing any research directly putting money on momentum funds. Your really different from other content makers. I really like to appreciate your work. One day I will meet you personally and show my gratitude. Thanks shankar.

    Shankar, thank you for spreading knowledge with your clear and no-frills delivery style. Right now I have 2 mutual funds running-one flexicap and other in small cap. Further to this video of yours, would like to add a momentum fund but need guidance on the following options: 1. Have two separate MFs-one largecap actively managed and one pure midcap momentum fund (NIFTY MIDCAP 150 Momentum 50) 2. A NIFTY 200 Momentum 30 fund that covers both large and mid categories. Which one would you suggest?
    In addition to these, if I were to invest in a SWP plan with a lumpsum of say 50 L, will a hybrid fund be more advisable than a NIFTY 50 index fund?
    Any inputs will be of great help

    Hi Shankar,
    What do you think about the following allocation for the long term? -- Mainly I'm thinking right of this is not correct.
    I'm considering both the following funds as one fund only: with the idea of having Active as multi-cap and adding a bit more of flexi cap, just to add a little bit more balance in case general allocation of having 50% in small and mid-cap doesn't perform in a bear market but having a flexi cap fund which is managed aggressively from quant just to transfer bit more to performing market cap. I am not sure if this thinking is correct, but my calculations are giving me the following ratios for the last five years
    => Quant Active Fund = 30%
    => Quant Flexi Fund = 25%
    Mostly Large Cap Focused Flexi Cap:
    => Parag Parikh Flexi Cap Fund = 25%
    Special Allocation (20%)
    => Quant Momentum Fund = 10%
    => Quant Value Fund = 10%
    Expected Portfolio CAGR: 29.38% (Not expecting this, expecting 15% in long run but with consistency)
    Portfolio Beta: Approximately 0.91
    Portfolio Alpha: 9.90

    Thank you for this video. I am a rather conservative investor and honestly I wouldn’t have considered a momentum strategy earlier. But after having watched your video, I now think that it would be prudent to start with around 4% to 5% allocation of my portfolio to momentum and increase it in the next 2-3 years if it yields good results.
    I have a full time job so I would have to look for a mutual fund or a smallcase to start with. I am thinking of starting with Motilal Oswal Nifty 200 Momentum 30 Index Fund.
    I have watched some of your videos and I have always learnt something. Great stuff and please keep it up 😊.

      I've never tried a momentum smallcase so I'll not know but two points:
      1. I don't choose investments based on taxes, I do it on the post-tax returns (are you expecting the same returns in the case of index fund & smallcase?)

As someone who is generally bullish, I'm interested in exploring momentum investing to enhance returns while managing risks effectively. Could you please shed some light on how a momentum strategy is managed if the market turns bearish? Thank you.
      1. Pls have a detailed discussion on this with your financial advisor since momentum will be a part of your overall strategy & it won't be looked at in isolation. In a bear market, most equity instruments tends downwards & so will momentum.
      2. There is no generic view on this. You're comfort will be key. Kindly examine the data presented in the video & see if you are comfortable with it for the short or long term
      3. Momentum index funds follow a documented strategy so they will be fully invested during bear markets; active funds might follow a different strategy (like reducing exposure if there are no clear opportunities or during bear markets) but since Samco & Quant are very new to this and haven't seen a bear market, we'll have to wait to understand the AMC's response.

    @shankar - I am in a situation and i hope you read my message and reply please. i have substantial amount of money in Axis debt funds. Now i want to move my money from debt funds to equity funds. here are my questions -
    1. Which Axis equity fund would you recommend that I move my money for next 10 years?
    2. Do you think it is a good idea to move my money 50:50 in Axis Value fund and Axis Multicap fund?
    3. Axis does not have a momentum fund. hence should i withdraw my money and move it to a different fund house?

    Hi Shankar, excellent video with simple strategy backed by data. I am watching from Bangladesh. As you mentioned its performed poorly in the bear or side ways market. So how would you consider adopting the technology when we don’t know or predict how the broad market will perform in next 3 or 6 months? Any insights?

      Thank you very much, glad you liked this video. It's difficult to be 100% sure but there are always some markers. For example -- if the valuations are heavy (e.g. 26 or 27 PE for Nifty 50). Or if the corporate earnings are coming down i.e. Nifty EPS .. then these are indicators that the stock market is likely to go down. One can see this more clearly with sectoral indices. e.g. IT indices have not kept pace because the Nifty IT earnings growth has been quite flat (just 4%) in the past 1 year. This weighs in on the index performance.

    Also SIP vs Lumpsum in Momentum fund.

      @shankarnath  6 месяцев назад

      Hello Priyank ji
      1. The comparison between active & passive momentum is there in the video itself - pls have a watch.
      2. Which smallcase (I'm assuming you mean within momentum) is difficult to answer. Smallcases are closed communities i.e. we don't know much about the portfolio, sectors, weights etc. Its the smallcase owner's proprietary logic so it's difficult to compare. I connected with the smallcase team on giving me access but since these are propreitary, they couldn't offer me one -- which is understandable & I'm glad they respected the owner's rights
      3. SIP vs lumpsum in momentum fund is not clear. May I know what you need here? If it's returns please use valueresearchonline.com or moneycontrol.com or advisorkhoj.com for the same. They have a lumpsum and SIP returns calculator there

    • @shankarnath
      @shankarnath  5 месяцев назад

      Hello. I couldn't find any such backtesting loop so I did it the hardway. Steps:
      1. Extracted ~800 stocks (after applying an mcap filter) on the basis of it's 1 year return from screener.in
      2. For the same stocks, I extracted the 6 month return
      3. 1 year return minus 6 month return gave me the stock returns from Feb 2023 to Jul 2023
      4. The top stocks have momentum so that becomes a part of the Aug 2023 momentum list

    Would you say 1% expenses (2% with transaction charges) is ok or too high for a PMS

    • @shankarnath
      @shankarnath  6 месяцев назад

      I haven't invested or analysed a PMS, so it won't be right of me to comment on expenses. But generally, I look at post-expense returns as that's what matters. A case in point is RenTec which charges a 5-10% expense ratio but has been performing at 60% p.a. returns or something.
