It's just so improbable, under any circumstances, to find this combination of writing skill, sense of story, emotional delivery, wicked chops on the instrument, a fine unique voice for the genre, starting so early in life and still coming on strong.
manthasagittarius1 - the man just keeps getting better - check out (if you haven't already) his live set at Shrewsbury from last year - utter genius from first to last and the energy - especially for a nearly 70 year old - his electric guitar on Put it There Pal is phenomenal. Hoping to see him at Sidmouth this August as the car broke down last year on the way to see him at Eastbourne and I haven't got over the disappointment yet - lol!!
Richard Thompson is the best guitarist/ singer / songwriter that the world doesn't know about. He's been around since the early 60s and is still going. One of his biggest fans is Eric Clapton and vice versa. His son Oliver plays with Bryan Ferry and is also a brilliant player.
Gary Westfall - I read your comment and thought of how I used to react to Black Lightning - for about 2 years after first hearing the song I could not listen to it without crying - it may pass - it has with me. I love this song, and another heart wrencher is The Woods of Darney - oh and Tongues are the Guns.
One of the best songs of all times. Thompson is so underrated...
It really isn't fair that one person can write, play & sing this well... and criminal that so few know who he is...
That pretty much nails it
The. Best. Song. Ever!
The timber, low to high range, and long breath vocals put me over the top. Sauce for the goose are the full of life lyrics

Make it five. He is a pillar of this old outlaw’s soul.
A phenomenal song and performance!
What an unbelievable song. RT is peerless.
OMG His voice is sublime on this track
Unbelievable that only 4 people have commented on this magnificent song-his best vocal ever
Make that five (at least). Superb vocals for s man with a supposedly limited range.
someday I may be able to listen to this without tears running down my face but I kind of hope not.
