Really fun reaction! When you called Charlie “fragile” a few pages before he vents to Nick about how very *not* fragile he is. 🫢 I agree that it’s important for Nick to do what’s right for him, but I think this volume underscored that Nick is the one who actually feels more dependent on Charlie, rather than the reverse, which I think a lot of readers and fans just assume is the case - that because Charlie experiences mental illness, he must be the “needier” one. Obviously Charlie loves and wants to be close to Nick, but when Nick goes away for a few days Charlie breezes through his exams, his Head Boy application, and prep with Sahar’s band. He’s able to do that because as Alice and in this volume Geoff have pointed out, Charlie has a strong sense of who he is and more confidence than people give him credit for. Nick on the other hand really flounders on his own, as noticed by Tara, Elle, and even Charlie in their chats each night. Charlie’s been his safety net in a lot of ways!
The fact you went to Forbidden Planet pacifically to get Heartstopper, somehow brought me just as much as joy as me recieving mine if the mail. Haven't been there in so long, it's my preferred go to place for Manga though I will take what I can get from Waterstones too. Haven't read Heartstopper vol 5, mainly because I want it to be my first read of 2024, but at this point I may just have to read it.
I agree with you on how Charlie's Mom did have a point. She always seems to handle things in extremes if that makes sense. Like maybe only letting Nick come over for dinners? or limiting exposure. I think in that scene, the Dad agreed with the Mom, but thought it was to far of a reaction. In my experience, when you shut down a teenager and REALLY bring down the hammer to hard, it can lead to teenagers sneaking around or causes additional conflict in the future? I love how Nick talked about needing to figure himself out. Even if it will be rough for them in the short term, Nick growing more as a person will be very helpful/healthy for himself and the long term relationship. Tara spits facts constantly
I love that you brought up the tv show storyline with Jane and Charlie’s schoolwork, because I think it ties in really well with this volume. The issue for me with Jane in s2, while I understood her perspective, is that she didn’t handle the situation very well. She really didn’t talk to Charlie to try to understand why he was suddenly doing poorly in school, she just assumed she understood and made a judgment call without discussion. The issue with this is that I **don’t** just think Charlie wasn’t doing his work because of Nick - even after he was grounded he was still procrastinating. I think it was part of his spiraling mental health, and while his fixation on Nick was part of that, that was more a coping mechanism that contributed to him not doing his work, not the real cause. So I love the way that storyline gets contrasted with this one in volume 5. Jane understands Charlie better now, and even though they have a false start the first time, they circle back and have a more productive conversation. Last year’s Jane would’ve probably just gotten more angry that Charlie stormed off and grounded him. But she takes the time to hear him out, express her concerns, and come to a fair agreement. Some people don’t see it as a compromise but it definitely is. She wanted to put off even discussing the sleepover before, probably because it made her anxious and she didn’t want to deal with it yet. Off-screen, she seems to have rethought that and correctly identified what rational concerns she’s having and figured out what solution would address them. She’s definitely having other anxieties that probably make her want to put off setting a date and not say yes at all, but she knows that’s not fair. So she gives Charlie his “yes”, just after exams. I’m glad you loved volume 5 so much, I think it’s maybe my favorite? Or maybe it’s volume 4, but I think it depends on my mood 🤔. This is a more upbeat one for sure!
Regarding the show, Charlie is putting off his schoolwork because he’s protecting Nick, not obsessing over him in a typical ‘boy crazy’ way. He’s worried about Nick coming out and how hard he’s finding it to do, and also Nick’s exams. Charlie repeatedly helps Nick to study for his exams, neglecting his own homework. We know that Charlie is extremely smart and Nick is a passable student at best. Consider that Charlie is a year younger and a grade lower than Nick but he’s able to tutor Nick with Maths and Chemistry. In the Parent/Teacher meeting, Nick gets surprisingly good feedback while Charlie does not. This is because Charlie is putting all his effort into helping Nick, and while it’s working, his own coursework suffers. This is Charlie’s MO. He has low self esteem so he feels his friends and those he loves deserve to do well and be protected and it doesn’t matter if he suffers in the process. He won’t stick up for himself when people bully him, but he’ll throw himself on a grenade to protect others. The problem with that is you can no longer help others if you break down yourself. It’s why they say you have to save yourself before you can save others from drowning, or to put your own gas mask on before helping someone else. Charlie needs to learn he has to sometimes be selfish and he deserves and needs to put himself first when it’s important.

It’s definitely a driving force, yes, but I think Charlie not doing his work goes deeper than that. Even after he’s been fully grounded, and should hypothetically have plenty of time to do his own work, he hasn’t even started his final coursework essay. I’d argue that him helping Nick while ignoring his own grades is as much as cause as it is a result of the problem. If he obsesses over helping Nick, he doesn’t have to face the fact that he’s behind. Charlie’s procrastination habits in season 2 are really familiar to me, because they’re what it looks like when anxiety and toxic perfectionism collide. It’s very common in OCD. Also probably worth noting that Alice has also written about this kind of procrastination/school avoidance as a symptom of mental illness in Solitaire and Radio Silence. Without getting too nosy… I think it’s probably something they’re familiar with. So I don’t think they just had Charlie helping Nick and ignoring his own work as a character flaw, it seems very likely it’s also supposed to be an early warning sign of his mental health slipping.

In the beginning, I was kind of afraid Nick will choose Kent University just because of Charlie and not because he actually wants to go there since that was mentioned several times and went on for so long, happy that's not going to happen. Also happy Elle and Tara gave him that talk. Overall, I liked it better than vol 4 (which at times sounded to me like advice on a pamphlet at the doctor's office rather than a story). Loved Tori
I surfed on the video here and there to get an idea. Didn’t want to watch it all as I want to preserve myself for the marriage - well, Charlie and Nick’s, that is 😆. Meaning: in North America vol 5 will only be issued in a couple of weeks and I want to dive and immerse myself in the book with no outside opinion, interference, influence or what not: I want my reaction to HS 5 to be as close as possible to Virgin Conception (Xmas hint, get it ? 😌). One thing I’ve gleaned from the video is that Alice (bless her soul) has kept her drawing of Charlie and Nick free from any interference from the TV series. Charlie still has his flowing locks and youthful, innocent air vs Joe Locke’s more angular features and angsty faces. Also, the fact that she kept Aled alive. Make no mistake: I LOVE the series to pieces. It’s just that I came to HS via the books first and can’t help thinking that this volume 5 must continue to be uninfluenced by the series. I’ve heard there might be a volume 6. ❤👍Anybody can confirm ?
i thought that season 3 was going to be only based off the 4th volume but they were spotted filming at a university and a carnival so now i makes sense. i guess it’s based off both volumes. not gonna lie tho, maybe we’ll get a season 4??? joe locke did say goodbye FOR NOW charlie warlie. we’ll see

I really enjoyed this book! There are SOME things I dislike about the series but thats more preference. Its stuff like most focused romances are LGBTIQA+ which i dont mind, but for me it kinda unrealistic. Like in my school, i had to cram my true self down to avoid further bullying, and i formed strong anxiety that i never got over when i was young I dunno… also seems most grow quite strong and quick… alot faster then me… i dunno… kinda feel weak ANYWAY happy stuff! I love the way she shows her picture on mental health and feelings. I also really REALLY like how over time her drawings improve Kinda makes me feel *who cares if im bad now… if i put my heart into it… i can do it too!* Its sooooo inspiring I remember-so much from my school too from reading this, but the t.shirts only like 4 people signed my shirt… because i made them 😂 Oh this book made me feel far too much

Volume five overall was good. It’s better reading it in one go than it was reading it day by day page per page on Alice’s Patreon because that Uni trip just drags on and on and it’s frankly pretty dull for the most part. I get that it’s how the story needs to go, but it could have been shorter. I was more interested in how each boy were taking steps in self discovery and self esteem, and moving their relationship forward by becoming more intimate. Since the comics really do focus on them, I wasn’t too worried about the other characters not really having much of a story. If we get four seasons of the show I am sure Alice will expand their stories as she has done before. I’d give this book an A- or B+… excellent except for the Uni trip which could have been told at a faster pace.
