The differences in the naval tactics of the Elizabethan Navy and the Spanish Navy (long-range gunnery vs grapple and board) in 1588 reminded me of the similar difference between the Joseon Navy and Hideyoshi's fleet during the Imjin War in the 1590s. The Korean emphasis on long range gunnery and carefully-executed group formations helped them win almost every naval engagementin that war against the larger Japanese fleet. By the way, the Ming Dynasty bowl found in the Spanish wreck in Northern Ireland may have probably been shipped from China to Manila, Philippines then across the Pacific to Acapulco, Mexico, and overland to Veracruz, and then from there to Spain.
spanish armada lost because of weather and most the fleet burned faster because of wind and the armada connected by rope for stability, not becoz weaponry
Lots of comments about Portuguese Flag. Its accurate. A lot of the ships were in fact Portuguese, including the Flag Ship (São Martinho) of the whole Armada
The Spanish took the crown of Portugal in 1580 when Philip II of Spain was crowned King Philip I of Portugal. This began a personal union between the two countries, known as the Iberian Union, that lasted until 1640. The Iberian Union was the result of a succession crisis after the deaths of King Sebastian of Portugal and his great-uncle Henry of Portugal. Philip II of Spain defeated the other claimant to the throne, Dom António, Prior of Crato, in the Battle of Alcântara in 1580. The Iberian Union was an unpopular period for Portugal, and the Portuguese Empire declined during this time. In 1640, Portugal reestablished its independence with the Portuguese Restoration War and the Portuguese dynasty under the Bragança.
Maybe so looking at the weather today 12/1/2024 Red Bay is in the 30s F/0 C with light snow and London is 50s F/10 C. I think the Gulf stream has something to do with that.
2:45 When they zoomed the screen onto Red Bay, I initially thought this might have something to do with the Norse 600 years earlier. It is right next to Les Aux Meadows. The Spanish in England and the Norse in Vinland are both epic seafaring catastrophes and Leif Erickson was a good and faithful Roman Catholic.
"The mighty spanish armada"- Proceeds to show portuguese ships. Also the first maritime empire were the Portuguese, not Spanish. The misinformation is kinda crazy 😂
You didn't even mention Sir Francis Walsingham and the barrel staves, pathetic. The Spanish didn't even know about the Gulf Stream. They never really stood a chance against the English who are actually Germanic-Scandinavian, basically Danish Vikings. They can't tell first wave Anglian settlers apart from later wave Danish settlers by DNA in England. England was founded by Jutes in 449 CE, led by Hengist, then many Angles joined in, later, Frisians and Saxons. The Scandis were building boats and ships a long time ago, probably from around 1700 BCE on. Masters of the seas is an understatement. The Spanish were good, but not that good.
From my research The English cannons did Very little. A Huricane did the main DAMAGE. My father thought it amusing that in our fair skin red haired Scottish race we have olive skinned dark haired Scotts. The survivor's left their trace. D n a ancestry texts have found some Spanish ancestery in my daughter. So there must be SOMETHING TO IT
Ater Spanish defeats of the British. They became weak and when Napoleon Invades Spain. Spain was humbled that they stop and never innovate their military. It's more on maintaining their colonial position and they refuse to take part again to major wars anymore.
curious: empires all over the world changed the lives of occupied peoples everywhere, not just europeans. how is the spanish period viewed in philippines today?
Pity you fail to mention the demi-culverins, mounted facing forward, or the numerous swivel guns along the upper decks, that were BREECH LOADING. These were the iron cannon guns mentioned. Breechloaders were far faster to reload than the muzzleloading guns, and as a history professor, I'm very disappointed in NatGeo failing to mention this.
Sorry, but you have a serious lack of knowledge of that century 's history!!! These isn't just an opinion, but a historical & scientific fact ! A few years before of the 'Invincible Armada", and with a real setup, they were able to get the orphan teenage king of Portugal (number one of Spanish oponents!) to be captured and kill during a North Africa attack (on the name of religion); this, and due to the fact that there was no direct descendant to the Portuguese Crow, Spanish claim the right to access to the thrown by the different marriages. And they decided to attack the kingdom of Portugal and claiming the Crown! To make a long story short, once they had the control of the Portuguese Royale Navy (the biggest at the time), they use those heavy ships to complete the Armada, with the intention of attacking England (70 to 75% of the ships were Portuguese); however, they used the ships, but not the Portuguese sailors! Which was the biggest mistakes! The Spanish didn't have the knowledge of the use of this weapons! Wich finished tragically! It's true that the Royale Navy did put in a serious fight, along with innovations! That (and i insist for you to look for accurate information) was what bought the biggest Armada at the time to a disastrous conclusion! It hurts those who do have accurate and scientific proof, to see these fake history! Please, make sure that you search for the right information from the appropriate sources! Thank you! And...shame on those who come up with "fake news" (even if... I'm certain that most of them don't even know the entire truth!!!!!!!
Hey NG. Dump this cocky narrator and the salacious, over hyped narrative while your at it. You've got an interesting story already. Don't need to "shark week" it.
Drain the oceans never disappoints. Thanks once again!
I watched this historical video with great pleasure!Thank you.
This segment is beyond brilliant

Impressive! 🌊⚓ The episode revealed fascinating historical secrets about the Spanish Armada.
Voice of narrator💯%true legend in historian"topic.,
NatGeo☄️💟💟🏆🏆🎉
very surprised they had Craig Sechler go back and renarrate seasons 1 and 2 with his own narration, keep it up national geographic
Love this series, thanks!
I wish these episodes were longer!
So impressive! 🌊Thank you National Geographic for such a great episode! 🙌

Interesting and well said 👏.
let them blaim the spanish for everything XD its right boys, we, the portuguese were the good guys :)
Excellent video 😮😮❤❤
Enjoyed. A little funny though calling Red Bay part of the far, frozen north. It's at the same latitude as London.
Maybe so looking at the weather today 12/1/2024 Red Bay is in the 30s F/0 C with light snow and London is 50s F/10 C.
I think the Gulf stream has something to do with that.
What a sweet story ❤
so impressive
An era when might was right!
Wait, has anything changed centuries later?
nope. not really
Red Bay is hardly the "Far frozen north of Canada". FFS!
Or "frozen waste of north America"

Greedy Spain had greedy rivals huh? How horrible...
Wars are fought by the people for
the govt, politicians, and elite,
not by the govt, politicians and elite
for the people.
This armada carries with it the Spanish Inquisition. We cannot be defeated-cate blanchette in Elizabeth: The Golden Age
"Canons" are music works. 27:01
My word! A 40+ gun ship in the 1500's and it was a merchant ship originally!
"The mighty spanish armada"- Proceeds to show portuguese ships. Also the first maritime empire were the Portuguese, not Spanish. The misinformation is kinda crazy 😂
not misinformation... plenty of Armada ships were, in fact, Portuguese... Flag Ship included... Spain itself didn't have enough ships...
First Maritime Empire. Vikings?

Most ships in the armada had laser range finders.
Maybe they can drill a hole in the seabed and put the bath plug in it. Bit like the Morhorovich project that tried to drill into the earth's mantle
You should ajust the graphics. Talking about a 42 cannon ship and showing a 22 one does not fit.
Right from the beginning they say Spanish armada and then they show armada with Portuguese crest 😂
Because a large portion of the fleet was made up of Portuguese ships.
cool they used footage from the dutch admiral
How about the Algerian navy that time ? ❤
Really? Can you suggest a source? A link? Thanks.
What?
What about the Navy of the eskimos at the time. Also irrelevant to this documentary.
@@sylvia106 Its all in the Quran , didn't you know , everything WAS INVENTED FIRST IN ISLAM from fire to the wheel to the internet
The Portuguese flag was from a nike ad btw (for football)
It's like watching a story about a mob war.
The ocean really said, ‘Let me spill the tea on how England stole their way to power.’
Natural selection
Everyone stole their way to power back then. The Spanish didn't exactly come by their wealth honestly
I mean, STEALING POWER is kind of the thing to do for ANY COUNTRY that has EVER COME TO POWER? 😂😂
Europeans*
@@BULLYS_GET_BULLIED12 Dumbest thing I will read today.
the first ship the flag is a portuguese flag not spanish
How did they drain ?
Red Bay is hardly the "Far frozen North"........
English ships were smaller, and more maneuverable.
😊😊😊❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
00:06 this is a portuguese coat of arms, not a spanish one
If its the Spanish armada, why are you showing Portuguese ships at the introduction?
This is new enough to know that there is significant evidence that the Spanish were in fact not the first to circumnavigate the globe...
looking forward to this. thanks
Why is NatGeo still sayin Columbus discovered the Americas?

I guess this happening is the reason the Brits took Gibraltar?
Hello
People always only talk ill of the British Empire, forget the other European powers that did exactly similar stuff. Read your history.
Dutch danes Portuguese Spanish etc
Love watching this as a revenge from exploiting our land Philippines from these spaniards for over 300 years.
Your land is even named after the dead spanish king. Until now, you remain without identity and still possess slave-mentality. Poor colonial subjects
curious: empires all over the world changed the lives of occupied peoples everywhere, not just europeans. how is the spanish period viewed in philippines today?
@Scriptorsilentum curse that is being felt until now
The story may be true, but those ships that you made by computer are portugueses
They were Portuguese, a lot of them
Most of the ships in the Spanish armada were Portuguese and so were their crew, so it's not wrong. A simple search would save a comment like that.
No mention that there were 3 Armadas that sailed on England, losing all three. Silly Spanish.
ENGLAND had good reason to fear Spain. All empires excuse their atrocities in the name of GOD. SPAIN included.
