I remember seeing Pat on Pawn Stars with NWC and they asked if he had every played it. He said that he had played it with a friend. Ya, I was thinking of you and this nerd episode James!
Interesting. I've always looked at him from the start as a collector of NES games. Then I found out about Pat the NES Punk after AVGN. and I've always thought of them both when I think of NES collecting.
@@PoutingTrevor I would say he is an indirect collector, only because he has played so many retro games and consequently owns a collector-level library of games and consoles.
AVGN Commentary Drinking Game: Take a shot every time James says "yeah" and take a drink every time Pat mentions how something didn't make it into the video.
welcome2havoc Yeah...Pat would be like..."there were these shots that I worked really hard on and should have been in the video...but you cut them out...haha that's so funny"
Pat actually makes a very good point here, in that the Nerd had never actually interacted with another collector prior to this, which is why we'd never seen this kind of rivalry before. Never considered that before, oddly enough, but a very nice attention to detail.
love both videos. I've been living in a hole for the last 20 years (actually canada) and just started watching AVGN and Pat a month ago, keep up the good work/videos guys. cheers
If it's your own money, why not? I collect old games from my youth and hardly play them, also old amercian and european sport cars and they just stand around most of the time. Whatever makes a person happy I'd say.
I love to collect them, some of those rare gems, I even play. Getting the unholy grail of gaming, the official 1993 Cheetahmen II game was something I have wanted for a very long time. I bought a sealed copy, opened it and played it. It was a better sense of accomplishment than my lame Stadium Events game. I have it, but don't really care for it, it just sits in the box next to the rest of the games that start with "S".
In retrospect, I wish I didn't open it because Cheetahmen II Lost Levels became available. I really wanted to play it on an actual console because I don't like emulated games.
The Combat part is hilarious. I would love you two to do a series together in the future. I know James is pretty busy with his movie but after its released I am sure he will have money thrown at him to make more videos. Not sure what Pat has been doing but I thought I heard he had a movie in the works. Thank you for these great videos and I look very forward to seeing the Nerd Movie!
I love this video, getting Pat's side was really cool. Please do this again on your other videos you've done together. And please guest in on that CU podcast, those guys have a great show.
If we learned something from this, it's that Pat films way too much content, and the Nerd keeps him in check and edits half of it out. They mentioned like 4 examples of this, and I'm only halfway into the video. hahaha
I really, really wish Pat's idea about the two carts merging and giving powers was what they went with. You can really tell Pat wished that as well. Really, it would have involved a higher production budget but they should have done it. Given the lengths AVGN tends to go nowadays for a given video, I reckon if they were to do it over today, they'd take it to the next level like that.
i was wondering that too. My thought was: just how much of each game is actually on the cart? did they have to cut down parts of the games that would not be used, like for storage space constraints of an nes cart, or did they just put the full games on and just modified the code a little for use in the competition?
Holy crap I really wish Pat wouldn't complain that much about how much stuff was cut out. He had to of known that most of that stuff had to be cut out! All the stuff he pointed out would've added an additional 5 minutes. Granted most people would stick around, but it would've been drawn out to long. I don't know, he might of just been letting us know how much filming they did, but he didn't have to complain about it...
to be honest, the first time i saw this episode, i was slightly dissapointed. they talk alot and there ain´t much going on; but after rewatching it several times, it got better and better and now, with the indepth sight on the background and everything, the episode really stands out as something special in the AVGN library!
great video! always has been one of my favs. i gotta know one thing, since pat was on pawn stars, it leads me to ask does pat still have both NWC carts? thanks looking forward to more vids by both of you.
Sounds like Pat is accusing James of cutting too much out, and James is trying to diplomatically steer him into other topics. No wonder we never see recent vids (besides this one) of Pat. James is pretty clever and would make a hell of a salesperson.
Discussing about outtakes and behind the scene stuff is part of the commentary. Pat is not accusing James, he's explaining right what any AVGN fan would expect to learn from an episode commentary.
Beside the problems that could have been in the writing of the script of this video (as I suppose from all the not very hidden complaints that Pat did in this video about the cut and the plot changes James wanted to make), that are really common when two guys with so many cool ideas work together, the final result is really enjoyable and is definitely one of my favourite avgn episodes... I hope there will be more collaborations with Pat and also the cut footage from this episode will be awesome too!
lol I watched this just to confirm what carts they actually smashed. I knew they really didn't smash the real ones but man they did a good job at making the lookalikes
Surprised James had not heard about the demo unit. I remember it being in a local electronics store in my hometown back in the early 90's (I live in Norway, though) Me and a couple of friends used to go there and play games after school. Remember among the 12 NES games you could choose from there was Zelda II, Battletoads and Bart vs. The World etc :)
Interestingly enough, NES Remix 2 has a mode that mimics the 1990 Nintendo World Championship game by using Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, and Dr. Mario. SMB3 and Dr. Mario replaced Rad Racer and Tetris from the original game.
Pat seems to be a little irritated about the footage being cut, maybe I'm wrong but he brought it up multiple times in the commentary. Just an observation.
maybe, but.....eh, I think that's just his personality, like...like he just really wants everyone to know how much they did, but couldn't fit in there.
I remember seeing Pat on Pawn Stars with NWC and they asked if he had every played it. He said that he had played it with a friend. Ya, I was thinking of you and this nerd episode James!
Dickbags, all of 'em!
I think they actually played the reproduction cart for this video. I would guess Pat actually played the real one with his good friend Ian Gadfly.
they did but it was still the nwc game
It's weird that I felt let down when I found out that James doesn't actually own a Gold cartridge
I was let down when I found out it wasn't actually smashed.....
I'm pleased. James isn't a collector imo. He's about playing games.
Interesting. I've always looked at him from the start as a collector of NES games.

James and Pat should team up again in the near future, They make a really good team.
yea, it is one of the best nerd videos.
they do! thus year they did a video together.

AVGN Commentary Drinking Game:
Take a shot every time James says "yeah" and take a drink every time Pat mentions how something didn't make it into the video.
That’s a terrible idea you’ll get alcohol poisoning
@@himacri9334 I think that’s the point/idea/joke haha
I'd rather just count and keep track! 😅
Pat was in love with his own ideas
That’s what it’s like being an artist. You have to love your ideas or why would you bother with the hard work
that episode was comedy gold
COMEDY GOLD. You did a pun.
lol XD good one!
AAAAAYYYYYYY pun
Hahah.
Stop.
Like the cart
As a fan of both James and Pat, it's so awkward feeling the tension between two creative geniuses pulling in different directions
Yeah, you can tell. Pat keeps mentioning how a bunch of different things were cut from the video and they just awkwardly laugh it off.
shrug, that's part of the creative process in collaboration
***** Things getting cut and differences are, true. But it doesn't change the fact it still feels awkward listening to them discuss it
"Tension"
welcome2havoc Yeah...Pat would be like..."there were these shots that I worked really hard on and should have been in the video...but you cut them out...haha that's so funny"
All this talk about how this shot or that shot "actually went on forever and we cut it out" makes me really want a Director's Cut of this episode.
This video introduced me to Pat. I've been a fan since.
Same here :)
He's an a hole
legend of my ass
amilo5 I loved that line
What I like about this episode is that it's simple, yet perfect. I love the way this turned out, it's like it could actually happen in real life
The choke really made it.
Love how the gold cart had a battery that flies out too. XD
To make keen-eyed nerds have less of a heart attack
Pat's reaction to the goat sound is even funnier now that I watched this.
One of the best Nerd videos right down to the metal Nerd theme music at the end. That's quality entertainment right there!
Pat actually makes a very good point here, in that the Nerd had never actually interacted with another collector prior to this, which is why we'd never seen this kind of rivalry before. Never considered that before, oddly enough, but a very nice attention to detail.

Anyone else laughed that he referred to it as "The Nerd's Lair"? Sounds like a geek supervillain hideout.
Might be my favorite episode... I love when you two collaborate!
Commentary videos are awesome! Thanks so much for this!
One of my favorite videos of AVGN. Great commentary
The idea of all video game collecting, spend 1000's of dollars on games to put them on a shelf and stare at them! XD

How's it anything different from comic book collecting, stamp collecting, art collecting or trading card collecting?
The Combat part is hilarious.

A truly classic episode. One of the best. :)
I love these episodes that brings up back stories about the game, like the SwordQuest and NWC. Seriously can't wait for AVGN: The Movie!!!
Legend of my ASS lol...
THATS MY SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII (BOOM) ala key & peele
Baaaahghghhhghhh.
This was one of my favorite episodes. I am so jealous of Pat for having two legit copies of the NWC.
Pat sure loves to talk/laugh about himself.
He did what people are supposed to do in commentaries: talk about the process.

This is my favourite part. I love the way The Nerd gives the thumbs up.
I love this video, getting Pat's side was really cool. Please do this again on your other videos you've done together. And please guest in on that CU podcast, those guys have a great show.
Rewatched in 2020, this is amazing!! Straight true comedy gold!! Hahaha
One of the favourites for sure, great commentary guys :)
If we learned something from this, it's that Pat films way too much content, and the Nerd keeps him in check and edits half of it out. They mentioned like 4 examples of this, and I'm only halfway into the video. hahaha
Exactly! James is a much more experienced film maker, and Pat thinks he's funnier than he is.
One of the best AVGN's made IMHO
One of my favorite episodes among all AVGN's!! I watched it at least 5 times and it never failed to be entertaining. Great commentary as well!
I loved how perfect this episode turned out to be back then, really enjoyed the commentary
This was fun to watch. I agree; Pat and James should do another episode or something together.
The spinal tap reference was hilarious. That goat was too xD.
I'm mad Pat never went back onto the subject of how he felt when he got the NWC Cart after James interrupted him
Love when you and Pat collaborate:) keep up the good work bro!!! #Nerd4Life
haha i lost it at the goat sound reaction, i wondered what that was all about in the original video
I love your videos! Keep them going!

Seemed like this whole commentary consisted of Pat making James feel bad for cutting parts of him out of the video lol
Yeah Pat was being really passive aggressive here which kinda pissed me off
What if they got something mixed and accidentally destroyed the real carts?
Then the strangulation scene would look more realistic.
I love your video's James but I hunger for new nerd video's with the old concept.
Agreed.
"Well thanks Frames for doing this with me"!
I'm curious, could you potentially beat Super Mario Bros on this cart, or is there a cut off somewhere?
its not possible. There is a time limit to go through all of the games, other wise tetris would go on forever.
Using hacks to freeze the time would make it possible.
minigunexo Which you could not do on the cart, which is what he was asking about.
i was wondering that too. My thought was: just how much of each game is actually on the cart? did they have to cut down parts of the games that would not be used, like for storage space constraints of an nes cart, or did they just put the full games on and just modified the code a little for use in the competition?
Super Mario Bros. can be beaten in under 6 minutes, and the DIP switches allow 6 min, 21 sec.
one of the best episodes, thank you guys, please make an stadium events episode
FRAMES?! LOL! He called him Frames.. ha ha ha ha ha. FRAMES!!!
Probably because he talks to Frank mostly and his brain was stuck on that name :D

Does anyone know the title of the Spaghetti Western Theme by John Jennings Boyd at 11:58, I'm looking for it.
11 years after, I want a directors cut, even when the episode will run for 8 hours I would watch it :D
Pat imprisoned James in a glass jar for this commentary.
h_wolfy lmfao
Upload the outtakes now

I love the nerdscream at the end of this video when Pat strangles him x3
Very good commentary ^^
The Nerd not knowing what games are on the NWC kind of fits his character since he goes into a lot of game blind.
this was my favorite episode
I think the Nerd's ending is better because even without the gold cart, the grey cart is still something I'd love to have.
This video is a classic in video game history.
did he call you frames at the end?

Yeah it kinda sounded like that but it's actually what we'd like to know in a commentary. I don't think Pat is actually "accusing" James of anything.
I love the part that Pat say for fans to do a extended cut of it.. and James change the subject as he don't want others to have AVGN revenue
