I just read it!! I did not watch the movie but, the descriptions of it made me think it would not be something i like. The movie deviated from the book in ways that made it more palatable for me.
Dead Beat is a banger. You're going to end the year strong with Dresden with that one, then I predict next year the series skyrocketing into one of your all time favorites when you read the back half of the series and are caught up. Can't wait!
Excited to see the quarterly tbr! I've been getting back into reading and I want to be able to chat with people about some of my future reads so will be good to read some along with you!
I'm also trying to finish some bricks of books, with the biggest being Dr. Strange and Mr. Norrell or Anathem by Neil Stephenson. Then I'm gonna finish with Daughters of Sparta.
Only book I plan to finish before the end of the year is Rhythm of War. As for everyone else this has been a year of Sanderson for me but instead of reading the secret project I have started my journey into the cosmere. Started with Way of kings in january and after Rhythm of war I have read almost every cosmere book this year(except Lost metal, White sand and the secret projects)
Really looking forward to the Discworld reviews in the new year, pretty much one more "early" book to get through before launching into a series of absolute bangers!
I would highly recommend listening to The Last Final Girl, either solely or as an immersive reading experience. Stephen Graham Jones wrote it like a movie-a la a slasher film-with cues to camera angles and panning and all that.
Since I finally caught up on Stormlight, I plan to jump back into the Mistborn Trilogy. I hope to finish the Well of Ascension by the end of the year. Other than that I can’t plan out my reading month too much, I’m such a mood reader.
That's a very interesting list. I'm just reading Reaper's Gale now, too (which is book 7, by the way, can't believe you forgot our boy Bonehunters), and I definitely see what you mean about that specific storyline. This book is getting me VERY interested in (and kinda dreading) the next events, though, and I just started book 2, lmao. Also, hearing you talk about Tchaikovsky's City of Last Chances makes me really curious to read it. It's not gonna happen this year and probably not until I finish Malazan, and then I'll still have other books on the queue before it, but I am very interested
For me 2024 is the year I am reading Wheel of Time for the first time. Also doing a Stormlight re-read for Stormlight 5. And there are a few 2024 must read releases for me (The Trials of Empire, The Strength of the Few, is Of Empires and Dust coming too?!). So that is probably around half or more of what I will get to in 2024.
I dont read anywhere near your pace but i finally picked up Red Seas Under Red Skies and hope to finish that before Christmas. Also get well soon Korey!
Thanks for the Malazan update! I was almost about to ask for one! Regarding Reaper's Gale, its the 7th, not the 6th book in the series. The 6th is The Bonehunters. Among all the tomes I have read, the individual books of the Malazan series have retained their individual identity the most for me. You know the first is Raest, Lorn and Darujhistan. (my least favourite). Then, the second is Felisin, Coltaine and the Chain of Dogs, and that arrow at the end. The third is Iktovian and the siege of Capustan and that leg breaking at the end. The fourth is Karsa Orlong, Felisin and Tavore. The fifth is Tehol and Bugg, Trull and Rhulad and an entire new continent. The sixth is the siege of Y'Ghatan and the betrayal and a parting of the ways at the end. I had to look for what happens in the seventh, but be rest assured it has its moments! The 8th I will always remember for the climax, while the last two books should just be thought of as a single entity in two parts and give us a satisfying conclusion to the series.
1. Are there any books that you started that you still need to finish? Yes, "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood" by Howard Pyle 2. Do you have an Autumnal book for the end of the year? Nope, I usually ready based on what grabs my attention 3. Is there a new release you’re still waiting for? Defiant by Brandon Sanderson. 4. What are 3 books you want to read before the end of the year? I'll just be happy if I finish the two I'm reading now. "Lord of Chaos" by Robert Jordan (audio book), "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood" by Howard Pyle (hardcover). 5. Is there a book that could still shock you and become your favorite book of the year? Not really 6. Have you already started making reading plans for next year? No, I'm a heathen. When I get to about two thirds of the way finished with a book I start looking form my next read. It keeps my TBR very short.
for those of us still waiting on the final defiant book :) I'll be reading that and the Book that wouldn't burn are on my end of the year list. I like rereads too especially for holiday travel, which this year is Marie Brennan's Onyx court series
It's so weird I started following you because Erikson posted up your Gardens of the Moon review, I'm a huge Malazan fan! Then it got really weirder when I came back to the channel and found out you became a huge One Piece youtuber lmfao. I think i was 6 when I started watching One Piece and now im approaching 30. it's been really bizarre seeing my adult interests bunched up with my interests I've had since i was a little kid. The world is bizarre, cheers!
Hi, Merphy. Love your channels. I got "Rose Madder" by Stephen King and " the Only Good Indians" by Stepen Graham Jones from the library. I should finish those this month. I recently read a couple of really good books. "Home Before Dark" by Riley Sager and "In an Instant" by Suzanne Redfearn
Looking forward to the quarterly tbrs! And thanks for the winter description laughs 😂 My biggest priorities for end of the year are my Greatcoats re-read and Labyrinth’s Heart to finish off the Rook and Rose trilogy.
1. Well the one I’m currently reading, Children of Memory! I haven’t DNF’d any this year. 2. I don’t really mood read so no Autumnal books for me! 3. Getting Defiant today! I’m getting a lot of new releases for Christmas so I’m looking forward to that. 4.Defiant, Under Heaven, and Malice! 5. Under Heaven perhaps? It’s got a tough job ahead of it with Children of Time, City of Last Chances, and Best Served Cold though. 6. Of course! I have a Bingo challenge going so I’m reading those books first.
1. No. I always finish every book I start, no matter how terrible. (And I've read some stinkers this year!) 2. I live in the Best Hemisphere, where December means summer has begun. I'll be looking for something fun to read on the beach. Probably, I'll reread some Lee Child books. 3. Probably Defiant, although I don't actually plan to read it until next year. 4. I won't be reading much for the next month because I'm snowed under with work and have an approaching deadline but if I get time, I'll probably read the Complete Novels of Franz Kafka in December. 5. No. My top three books this year are pretty unassailable. I'm still not sure what the ranking order is, but my 3 best books this year were Flowers for Algernon, Kafka On the Shore and House of Leaves. 6. I've got a few ideas but my tradition is that I write my reading list on January 1st each year.
Not sure if you already know about this one, but in the spirit of "Coming Back Alive", you might want to check out "Wavewalker" by Suzanne Heywood. It's about the ten years she spent sailing with her family and her struggle to get away and go to college.
1. I started The Last Unicorn in a bookshop a while ago and still need to get around to finishing it now that I own it. I started The Winds of War on my mom's recommendation for a non-SFF classic and need to get back to that. 2. Lol no 3. I'm waiting for my copy of Saga Volume 11 to arrive, and there's still The Engineer by Will Wight coming out next week 4. I'll probably read Lonely Castle in the Mirror now that my hold arrived, thinking of reading Baker Thief also. I've also started reading more comics so I'll hopefully finish 1602 and another Spider-Gwen volume at least 5. I have vague undefined plans that don't go in any order. I still have some stuff planned for r/Fantasy bingo that I'll want to knock off, I just read Jade City so I'll want to finish the series, my brother and I have been planning on reading Realm of the Elderlings for a while, and I'm thinking of starting Malazan as my next big project.
I am currently reading through the Witcher series, have you ever considered trying it? I would really love your thoughts on the series. I used to read a lot as a kid and then got in to audiobooks. And just recently started reading real, physical books - and thats actually all thanks to you inspiring me to try it! So thank you Merph :)
I’m trying to finish The Liveship Traders Trilogy (Robin Hobb), Yumi & The Nightmare Painter (Brandon Sanderson), The Dragon Reborn reread (Robert Jordan), City of Brass (S.A. Chakraborty), and Harrow the Ninth (Tamsyn Muir) by the end of the year.
Your channel is inspiring me to get back into reading again! I used to read so much but then dropped off for whatever reason. I'm hoping to get these two done before the end of the year. I have the first Dresdin Files book by Jim Butcher (a friend really likes that series so I want to try it) and I'm halfway through 50 Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne. I wish you the best on your reading list and that the rest of this year treats you well!
I recently finished up rereading the robots/empire/foundation/eternals series by Asimov, still good. I'm currently reading 'The Peripheral" by William Gibson, as I watched the Amazon season 1 of this before reading the book it's kind of interesting how the characters are now those people. Once I finish the Peripheral and the second book The Agency I'll probably read Defiant, which should get here this saturday. Then I suppose I really need to start attacking my TBR shelf, finish murderbot then we'll see.
I hated Cage of souls and loved Tchaikovsky other books. I saw lots of ppl love it so hope you get to it and see which side you take on this, will be interesting ether way
Wurts is great. The Wars of Light and Shadow was a more unique take on fantasy in 1993 than it is today, but still good (personal long delay at 5 books into it). I enjoyed The Empire Trilogy written with Feist that crossed over into a different world from Feist's main The Riftwar Cycle.
Reminds me of a song from an old variety show called Hee Haw whose chorus went: Gloom, despair, and agony on me Deep, dark depression, excessive misery If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all Gloom, despair, and agony on me
Books to finish before the end of the year: Defiant by Brandon Sanderson The Lost Metal by Brandon Sanderson Starling House by Alix E. Harrow Sword Catcher by Cassandra Clare A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab The Woman in Me by Britney Spears So many things to read, but for some reason, I'm confident. I did beat my Goodreads goal, so everything I read now is extra. Which makes me happy.

I'm trying to finish book 1 in the Children of Time series by Adrian Tchaikovsky and for December I hope to have The priory of the orange tree by Samantha Shannon read as well as the last two secret projects by Sanderson.
Reaper's Gale is the 7th book. You are reading thia after the 6th book The Bonehunters, which you read after the 5th book Midnight Tides. Its fine to get them mixed up though. 😂 We very well know which plotline you are having trouble with in RG, and its a tough read. So take your time to be in the right head space to read it.
I had to open the wiki page for Reaper's Gale to remember what happens, but which plotline do you think it is? It could easily be the Awl, the Shake or the Refugium for me...
A scholar has been imprisoned as an enemy of the empire of Lether and her captor has been repeatedly r**ing her and then leaving her chained up on her own in virtually total darkness.
My tastes are varied when it comes to books, so I flick between historical fiction, fantasy and literary fiction. Finishing off the Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell, which is going to be in my top 5, if not number 1 spot. Plan on reading the third book in the Earthesea series - The Fathest Shore by Ursula K Le Guin and The Well of Ascension by Sanderson (very late to the party, I know).
I hope Corey feels better. My nephew also is sick right now. I always do this tag in November, but I wonder if it should be done in October to give more time.
I'm trying to finish Napoleon: A life and a storm of swords which is a challenge being both over 800 pages but im about half way through both so wish me luck
oh yeah lets do the tag Q1: Yes, Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, and more but I think that is the most important one Q2: No, I am not a seasonal reader Q3: Nope, the last books on my need to read list that were released this year came out on the 7.11 :) not that I've finished any of them yet, but at least I've started one Q4: the Will of the Many by James Islington (for some reason I am really hyped for this book since I heard about it but I haven't gotten to it yet), Battle of the Linguist Mages by Scotto Moore (I am not a cover buyer, I am a title buyer, I don't even care what the book is about the title sold me, (actually I've read the description and promptly forgot it again, but I think I liked that too)), The Sunlit Man by Brandon Sanderson, (just haven't gotten to it yet) Q5: lets hope one of the answers of question 4 will xD idk, I am very bad at even 5* predictions I don't really have them Q6: only half, I am participating unofficially (meaning I probably won't send it in) in the r/fantasy bingo, and I only checked in in Oktober again after forgetting about it after April so my Bingo card wasn't very full yet. So my reading plans will involve finishing the Bingo, but I haven't fully planned it out yet, though I probably won't finish everything I have already planned this year, so I guess I already have some plans for next year xD )
You should read Daughter of the Empire, that book is perfection in every way, and her prose is not dense but easy/breezy but poetic too. The audiobook narrated by Tania Rodrigues is so good, really enhances the read!!
Loved this video! :) Are you going to be making an End of the Year Manga Tag in your manga channel? Just curious. Don't worry if you can't, you have a life too. Thank you.
Will you do a non spoiler video of death's end??? And I do not know if this helps but there is a FUTURAMA episode with a forward time machine...it helped me finish the book and the series.
Help!!! I am trying to find the video or really the book you talked about, it was hard to read but you loved it, written backward, and Clues you had to decipher, etc.. I want to buy it for my Husband Thank you I hope my description helps lol
Merphy, I spy with my little eye The Will of the Many on your bookshelf. I hope you plan to pick that up at the beginning of 2024. It is a fantastic book and I think you would love it.
i always forget if i've actually read the 4th hitchhiker book or not, hearing this i realise maybe i just deleted it from my brain =P get well soon Korey ~
Cage of Souls is soooo good. Its one of the best Tchaikovsky books imo. Its cool seeing how the jungle feels like its own character. The world is so atmospheric. You gotta check out his Children of Time series. One of the best SF books of the 21st century so far. I reallly do still love the Dandelion Dynasty but 3 & 4 kinda disappointed me. I was driven crazy by how slice of life the end of book 3 got with that whole cooking competition thing. But what really got to me was the "betrayal" of Thera's storyline imo. Wall of Storms kind of sets things up with Thera's story and implies some promises to the reader. But it seems like as he was writing Liu decided to go in a different direction that left me feeling very unfullfilled regarding Thera- my fav character. I wanted to like the ending more than I did 😔
I think it will be hard to find, but try to find the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy mini series from 1981. Also completely useless fact. The books are the 3rd version of the story
since you said you'd be reading a discworld book each month, i planned to keep pace with you. but then you changed the order you were reading in and then i was unable to pick back up. so i lasted like three or four books before i fell behind. oops.
Hi Merphy, I have a new book rec for you if you're interested. I just finished Pirate Hunters by Robert Kurson. It is a non fic about two shipwreck divers hunting for a pirate ship called The Golden Fleece. It was such a great read! I finished it in 3 days and it might currently be my favorite 2023 read. It has so much adventure and feels very piratey. Have a great Thanksgiving!
Super fun video! Great pivot. It amazes me how many books you’re going to knock out in December! Lily and I would love to do this on our channel too if that’s ok. We only have like 13 subscribers lol. Started the channel because my 12-year old wanted one.
@@notrixamoris3318 errr no. The term quadrilogy was used in the 1860's way before films were using the term. The term quartet also doesn't only apply to music. The differences are minor and mostly interchangeable. All refer to four closely connected works. You are right that tetralogy is more common in reference to books however.
I read Speaking Bones recently and loved it, so I'm very excited for your review on that. I'm gonna read Blood Over Bright Haven and I hope I'm gonna like it as much or close to Sword of Kaigen
I forgot to mention that Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer is also on my December TBR :)
Thats the film from netflix right???
I just bought Annihilation, will be waiting for your review then.
I just read it!! I did not watch the movie but, the descriptions of it made me think it would not be something i like. The movie deviated from the book in ways that made it more palatable for me.
Southern Reach is something else. Apparently the author is continuing the story which I'm looking forward to.
@@notrixamoris3318 Yes, although the film and the book are practically unrelated
In which Merphy forgets about the existence of The Bonehunters
heart breaking
Truly Unwitnessed
@@Yoda0VGs I read just enough of Reaper's Gale to understand the reference, lol
I LOVE Reapers Gale so much. Its my fav in the series seeing how all three plotlines finally come together.

I love your idea of having a TBR video quarterly. I can plan my reading and watch your reviews on the books I also read!:)
so excited to hear what you think of the next Dresden Files book!
I remember that you started reading Ascendance of a Bookworm and that you liked, so I hope that you will continue it in 2024!
I plan on making a start on The Expanse and The Green Rider series next year
If you haven't listened before, I really recommend the BBC radio plays of the Hitchiker's series. They are really fun!
For me 2024 is the year I am reading Wheel of Time for the first time. Also doing a Stormlight re-read for Stormlight 5. I'm trying to finish book 1 in the Children of Time series by Adrian Tchaikovsky and for December I hope to have The priory of the orange tree by Samantha Shannon read as well as the last two secret projects by Sanderson.
Always thought the shelves behind you were a graphic, then you just reached back and took a book 😂
🤣
What is the current timeline to get through "MacBeth" and "Hamlet"? I'm eager for your full "Wyrd Sisters" review!
Reaper's Gale is the 7th book. You are reading thia after the 6th book The Bonehunters, which you read after the 5th book Midnight Tides. Its fine to get them mixed up though. 😂
We very well know which plotline you are having trouble with in RG, and its a tough read. So take your time to be in the right head space to read it.
I had to open the wiki page for Reaper's Gale to remember what happens, but which plotline do you think it is? It could easily be the Awl, the Shake or the Refugium for me...
@@the_Nameless_One99 I think it is the Janath -Tanal Yathvanar plotline.
@@SouravUldyssian Which one is that again?
A scholar has been imprisoned as an enemy of the empire of Lether and her captor has been repeatedly r**ing her and then leaving her chained up on her own in virtually total darkness.
@@the_Nameless_One99 Its better not to say that here since it is a non spoiler section. Better check out the wiki for Janath.
If you post what your reading plan looks like it would be very interesting. I'm very curious to see how you do it.
Fresh sweater
Reaper's Gale is book 7 of Malazan. Hopefully you just miscounted and haven't had one go missing on you.
I hope Corey feels better. My nephew also is sick right now. I always do this tag in November, but I wonder if it should be done in October to give more time.
Great video. I always get a lot of recommendations from your videos, we have really similar reading taste 😊thank you☀️
I'm trying to finish Napoleon: A life and a storm of swords which is a challenge being both over 800 pages but im about half way through both so wish me luck
lol I love the “I’ll probably stop after 3… cause that’s where the series stops being good” 😂
I want to finish The Hunger of the Gods by John Gwynne and start and finish The Wall of Storms by Ken Liu.
Reaper's Gale: FINISH IT
oh yeah lets do the tag
Q1: Yes, Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, and more but I think that is the most important one
Q2: No, I am not a seasonal reader
Q3: Nope, the last books on my need to read list that were released this year came out on the 7.11 :) not that I've finished any of them yet, but at least I've started one
Q4: the Will of the Many by James Islington (for some reason I am really hyped for this book since I heard about it but I haven't gotten to it yet), Battle of the Linguist Mages by Scotto Moore (I am not a cover buyer, I am a title buyer, I don't even care what the book is about the title sold me, (actually I've read the description and promptly forgot it again, but I think I liked that too)), The Sunlit Man by Brandon Sanderson, (just haven't gotten to it yet)
Q5: lets hope one of the answers of question 4 will xD idk, I am very bad at even 5* predictions I don't really have them
Q6: only half, I am participating unofficially (meaning I probably won't send it in) in the r/fantasy bingo, and I only checked in in Oktober again after forgetting about it after April so my Bingo card wasn't very full yet.
I want to buy it for my Husband
Thank you I hope my description helps lol
Merphy, I spy with my little eye The Will of the Many on your bookshelf. I hope you plan to pick that up at the beginning of 2024. It is a fantastic book and I think you would love it.
She's read it already. 🙂
She did? I must have missed that video. I will have to go back and watch her review. Thanks for letting me know. ☺
i always forget if i've actually read the 4th hitchhiker book or not, hearing this i realise maybe i just deleted it from my brain =P get well soon Korey ~
Can you please read the stand by Stephen king.
Sad no video guest starring Korey 😢😢😢
But great book tag & love quarterly TBR idea
I wanted to like the ending more than I did 😔
Love the new channel split Also, you mentioned a discord. Is it for anyone in your community, and if so how do we join?
I think you skipped Bonehunters, book 6. It's one of my favorites.
I think it's meant to be for the last quarter? So done in / at the end of September, in prep for the last quarter of the year?
I think it will be hard to find, but try to find the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy mini series from 1981. Also completely useless fact. The books are the 3rd version of the story
I found it on DVD at my Barnes and Noble on sale for about $8.
since you said you'd be reading a discworld book each month, i planned to keep pace with you. but then you changed the order you were reading in and then i was unable to pick back up. so i lasted like three or four books before i fell behind. oops.
Who’s the artist who drew that amazing portrait for the book channel logo?
0:30 Is it me or there's no link to the original video in the description?
And is Merphy's Discord available only for Patreon supporters?
Quartet??? Wait I thought a series of four books is called tetralogy...anyone who read this am I wrong??? Please let me know.
Think it is the same thing. One in Latin and the other Greek. 😢
it can be either they just derive from different origins. some people also use quadrilogy
@@danielclasson9737 no quadrilogy is term for movies not books and quartet is music related but apparently is okay for books too...
Reapers Gale
reapers gale is 7th...
Heads up, Reaper's Gale is 7, The Bonehunters is 6
Ah right, I forgot I did Bonehunters on audio so when I counted books on my shelf I was missing one

Edit: this post needs a 😅 to take the edge of...
I am so happy with the intimacy this channel provides. ❤
